This was a pretty heated battle to access the airport. There was a serious concern about wingsuits due to the high volume of VFR traffic in the area. The largest Marine base in the US is 2 miles to the north, a heavily traveled VFR route along the beach is 2 miles to the west, a major airport is 6 miles to the south...we are skydiving in the center of a city. Also, I have to fill in an "incident report" any time a skydiver lands out of our 15 acre landing area. The city can terminate my permit if we have too many "incidents". After many meetings we conceeded to no wing suits and C and D experienced skydivers only. Once we ease into this and show the city we can operate safely we can start renegotiating the operating permit.

I speak by phone or e-mail with Randy Ottinger nearly every week. Luckily for me those conversation will mostly be to say hello and not for business now that USPA helped me gain access to Oceanside Municipal Airport. Without USPA's involvement we would still be fighting city hall and the FAA on issues. I can assure ALL of you that USPA is on top of every issue coming down the road and currently on the table. Skydiving isn't a magic thing that we all have a right to do anywhere we want. It takes a lot of hard work on many levels to keep us in the sky. 300 million people in the US and we have 36,000 members. We're lucky we have the voice we do at FAA HQ. We can all be part of the problem or part of the solution.

Perris Dude is probably some loser that came to the DZ with his chic. He probably cried for his mommy on jump run, while his chic had the time of her life. You know she ran off with her instructor, leaving his sorry ass to a life of internet porn and Top Ramen. We all know BC has more class in his pinky than Perris Dude ever had. Don't waste your time. You're just feeding a loon...

Rand Paul's comments are laughable. "just because a few people say it's Constitutional doesn't make it so". A few people meaning the SCOTUS.

Thank you Randy Ottinger and USPA!

I would like to give a very big, heartfelt thank you to Randy Ottinger at USPA. Randy is our director of government relations. He has everyone at the FAA on speed dial. I have just recently spent thousands of dollars on three different attorneys (aviation, land use, contract law) to access Oceanside Municipal Airport here in California. I have probably e-mailed and spoken by phone with Randy hundreds of times over the past two years and four months. He answered his cell phone and e-mail after hours and on weekends during the difficult times. This access battle has covered two giant issues. The city wanted me to obtain a Conditional Use Permit to use the obligated airport AND the airport manager wanted $5 per fun jump and $10 per tandem to use the LZ on airport leasehold property. Randy and my team of attorneys squashed both of those requirements and we will begin jumping there on July 14th. The side benefit of all of this was the education I have gotten from Randy regarding FAA, USPA and other issues. And above all, we have become pretty good friends. The next time you renew your membership, put a few bucks in there for the Airport Access Defense Fund. We need it. (I have not used a dime of the fund money, nor will I, we need that for Part 16 battles) Thank you Randy O', you da man! -

Some cities will make you go through a conditional use permit process. Be prepared to spend $20,000 to obtain it. -

Would you want YOUR skydiving to be 100% safe?
grimmie replied to rss_v's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Skydiving is 100% safe... It's those pilots, airplanes, other skydivers, throwing nylon into wind and gravity that interfere sometimes and lowers that percentage every so often.
