I think the biggest issue with current wingsuit competitions is that they are all so dependent of GPSes, sensors and other technical gadgets. I think we need a format like that of 4 way in RW. Aside from video, there shouldnt be a complex digital device needed. Maybe just a simple rule like the distance between two person not being more then the width or length of one flyer (if 4 way is what you are aiming for) and having that formation flown for an x amount of time. A lot of the rules you propose take the creative and free flying out of the 4 way, and actually turn it into another data-mining operation. Keep it simple..and maybe just figures in the 2D plane. As the 3D figures ad another layer of complexity and demands on the formation, camera flyer AND judging that make it hard to impossible to judge and still be objective. www.wingsuitcompetition.com/jumps.htm Though we would have liked multiple points, selected at random per jump, we decided to focus on a few simple points in a 2 way format. Should this work, we're planing on setting up a bigger contest next year, with 4 way teams, and or multiple rounds with randoms etc for the 2 way teams as well. But for now..simple rules, and some simple figures and a 2 way format may be a better first focus? I think the key to making a creative sub-dicipline in wingsuit 'work' is finaly throwing all the gadgets out of the window, and focussing on pure flight/formations with lots of creative flying, and finding a clear way to judge that with just video... Wish I could...and the moment they make skydiving a hobby that doesnt cost money I might... But in the meantime, I need the web as my distraction and search/learning tool for my work....or at least thats the excuse I try to sell myself.. JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

With a bit of help of the weather, we're doing some cool stuff next weekend with 'the team' and some fancy editing and cool photostuff is bound to make it online within a few days after that...so dont worry...cool links are coming soon The scary thing is, the time I put into the wingsuit/video etc stuff is only 5% of the time I have..the other 95% of my (work) time goes into animation/video etc stuff for tv/film...its sometimes scary to look back and see the amount of work I've done.. I have my own company, so I can shift stuff around to make time for the fun (wingsuit) projects... Having a severe case of ADD (you'll notice when you meet me in person..I just wont shut the f*k up) and knowing how the 'channel' the energy into my work does help hehe JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

We have a new Safety and Training section on our website, and have just finished the first big article. Wingsuit formation flying (direct link to the 1,2 MB .PDF) We have future articles planned on nerdy things such as GPS use, and whatever other things we can come up with... But for now, enjoy the first article. I dont want to scare anyone before starting to read, but its 25 pages long. Based on Tristans initial feedback "I want a version with pretty pictures" there are plenty of photos spread throughout the article Even some of tristan. The article focuses on flocking and all things that lead up to flying a good formation, in terms of patern, approach, flying style, and (especially) training. As stated in the article, these are the views we have on organizing, flocking and flying. So its not meant as the definitive 'end all discussion' basis of flying. If you have the time...give it a read..and I (and the people that helped in writing) definitely am interested in hearing what you think..either through PM or here.. A big thank you to the people who contributed to the article, Costyn, Steve, Macca, Alex, DSE and gadget..you guy rock! p.s. I cant be blamed for people not doing any work the rest of the day JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

Tony is also introducing another special 'cut' option soon, available on all current suits: It will be all latex, have lots of drag-inducing pink ribbons all over the suit, tight fitting crotch, inflatable boobies, and will be aimed at a small but dominantly present group of male flyers who prefer purple and pink wingsuits... The "Drag Queen" can be ordered starting next month.. JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete? -
We have been using that excact set of throat mics for in-air communication in combination with standard Nokia walky-talkies, and get understandable audio out of it, suitable for coaching, especialy when using clear simple directions/commands. They cost us 35 euros, and seem to do the job quite well... JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

I definately think tracking is good practice..especialy group jumps... But trying some other diciplines, be it freefly or rw, definately never hurt anyone.. Each one will teach you certain aspects that will come in handy in some form lateron.. JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete? -

If you check the 'sticky' thread in the WS forum, this information (though short) is there already.. And personaly, Id rather see someone who has been jumping with others. Be it RW, Freeflying etc. That person knows what's happening in terms of movement relative to others. And that person is much more likely to have played around on his back/belly and experienced some (group) messed up exits and the subsequent recovery... People just doing 100 solo trackingjumps can be quite clueless as to how fast, far, forward/sideways they are moving. Its cool that people want to work on their performance by doing trackingdives. But the first wingsuit jumps are NOT about performance..they are about safely learning to make the jumps. And recover when unstable. And fly relative to an instructor for any coaching dives that may follow after that.. Just going out in skydiving, and focussing on freeflying or RW will (in my view) give someone a much more solid basis to learn to fly a wingsuit. Doing that, maybe combined with some tracking (which you should be doing at the end of every jump with other people anyways) is, in my view, the best basis someone could have.. Most of the other drill-dives people come up with (to me) seem more like a thing to keep people busy and give em 'the feeling they are sort of flying a wingsuit', then that its actually something that will really make any huge difference to how they fly.. The 1st flight instruction on an FJC should contain all the information someone needs to fly a wingsuit safely. And performance comes after that...and at around 200 jumps, there is hardly the experience (in any previous dicipline) that will give someone bad habbits that cant we whipped out of their arse in one or two wingsuit jumps.. Or the short version...just go out and have fun! JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete? -

Wing Suit Flying from a pilot's perspective

I say it counts...! In 1978...man...I made my first flight that year....from my mothers lap into the cradle that is JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete? -
For those that didnt get this..two jumpers collided. One flying along with the flock, and one coming down, slighly diving. Both flying at a slighly different angle/converging path. The upper arm broke on one jumper, and the other jumper got hit on his calf, and he could walk for a few weeks. From what she told at the hospital, she used her teeth to open the zipper on her working arm, and spent a good long time trying to get it open. Which was hard to impossible using one arm and mouth. The cutaway cable would have been faster. But she didnt use them as the stressfull situation made her totally forget about them. But no denying they would have been the quick solution to getting her arm free. Seeing how she handled the collision. Not pulling within a big flock, but first falling to a safe altitude while holding her hand/arm (as it was flapping behind her body, the upper arm snapped). She did 100% what she should and could have done. And I dont think many poeple would have had the same excelent reaction, when confronted with the same stressfull/painfull situation. There have been a few 'unique' incidents where the cable-release would have been the best, if not only solution. And just because we've been flying commercialy available wingsuits for +- 8 years now, doesnt mean we've seen every thinkable/unthinkable scenario possible where they would come in handy during an emergency. I for one would never fly a wingsuit without a decent cutaway system...and honestly hope the smart dicision is made regarding this subject... JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

You asked for your costumer oppinion on leaving the cutaway handles off the suit.. I think your costumers spoke, but you dont like the answer... JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

Definately good advice...even though you do need to find an instructor that doesnt care about the actual 200 jump number safety recomendation too much hehe cheep joke.. Couldnt resist.. You went from falling to actual flying! Definately welcome to the flock! JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?
