  1. John, you know me & I know you. You have real & personal knowledge where I have been & where I haven't been. My question to you is this...What could you possibly know about their culture???? Different parts of the world have their own cultures. You remind me of Joe McCarthy. Why don't you just leave the things you know nothing about to yourself?????? I appreciate your abilities to get out of the aircraft @ 10K and make an accuracy jump......Hmp......C'Mon Man. Yeah, John. It's not oppression. It's a simple issue of cultural differences.
  2. It's the exact opposite for me. Although I live on a bike trail and get some great rides there, I do my weight training in the employee funded gym at work. I can hit it hard on a morning break; free weights, Nautilus, chin up bars and treadmills. We pretty much have it all. When I retire in a couple of years I'll have to join a damn gym somewhere. I've worked places like that before, but the problem is always that a 1 hour lunch is never long enough. I prefer to run and it takes me half an hour just to cool down before I take a shower, particularly in the summer. At home, If I take a 1.5 hour lunch, it's no biggie because I always work more than 8 hours anyway.
  3. There's a lot of truth to that. If I were to give it up, it would be a HUGE change in lifestyle. One more thing: Working from home allows me more time to exercise. It's hard to fit it in with a regular job.

  5. No, but I am also in the office each week. When I am working from home more often I alternate days in and out of the office. I've gone as long as 18 months without going into the office. That's pretty wild. I talk to my boss maybe 10 minutes per week.
  6. Yes on the culture, but that's not always bad. Hum, but if you are not a part of the culture, and things hit the fan....you could be a faceless person cut from the workforce? Right? Yes, and that is the biggest drawback. When layoffs start, you have no idea what is going on. On the other hand, I've been surviving layoffs for 3 years.
  7. Yes on the culture, but that's not always bad.
  8. I've done it with paragliders. There are a number of hazards that you need to be aware of that can kill you. Whatever you do, don't do it. You really can die. Lots of people have.
  9. I do. Been doing it for over 5 years. It is starting to get old. All in all, it's good.
  10. Payload on bottom, cord running up about 60-80 feet, attach to bottom of drogue, attach another cord to the apex of the drogue, run that cord up to the balloon. When the ballon bursts, the line from the apex of the drogue to the balloon goes slack, allowing the drogue to inflate. However, Rather than use a drogue, I'm going to just use a rocket recovery parachute. It will be quite a bit lighter. A drogue is a lot more substantial than I will need.
  11. FAA regs state it can't be over 4 lbs. What I'm going to do is send up a camera and then retrieve it via SPOT GPS transponder. Also, said electronics will be packed in styrofoam. The intent is to reach "the edge of space." Google "weather balloon space" and you'll find tons of stuff related to it.
  12. How much should the bank charge to completely reissue your mortgage?
  13. Need a couple of old pilot chutes or an old drogue. I'm going to use it to return a camera and GPS transponder to earth after the weather balloon that I send them aloft on bursts. If you can send it to me, I'll mail back whatever the postage was. Thanks!!
  14. Especially a female conservative. That being said, I'm not a big fan of Palin.
  15. Vskydiver and I watched one of those from our back porch. Very impressive. It was up in Northern Canada, but I would have sworn it was right over the Space Needle in Seattle. I know what you mean. There were lots of people being interviewed by the news the next day saying stuff like "it came across the lake and then it went down back behind my neighbor's chicken house. We took off looking for it, but never did find it." I think it actually struck the ground over a thousand miles away.
  16. Man, that's a really dignified looking bear.
  17. Even so, we may still get to see it. I saw a Russian rocket upper stage re-enter about 22 years ago. It was incredible.
  18. ...but it's not like there's never been any skinned humans hanging in my dimly lit garage before.
  19. I can understand that. I bet you see a lot that you detest. The stakes are very high and with most kids you have a fairly short window of opportunity to get them "ready to show." It's not like you or I where we've had many years to discover our interests and devote ourselves to them. I imagine that can lead to a lot of superficial accomplishments
  20. Hi Folks, I have 2 daughters in the 11th grade and could use some advice on guiding them toward extracurricular activities that will improve their chances for securing college scholarships. They both have a 4.0 grade average and will probably continue that through the end of 12th grade. As I understand it, in addition to good grades they will need to show involvement in the community and school related extracurricular activities. What sort of outside activities stand out? What sort do not help? What about: Model U.N.? Quiz Bowl? O Ambassadors? (It's a teenage philantropic organization connected with Oprah Winfrey) Volunteering at a homeless shelter? Any advice appreciated. They are great kids and I want to steer them in the right direction.
  21. Man, I would have given anything to have seen that!
