hmmmm ok, for those still in doubt, the drinking while packing was a joke. Don't know where the smoking is but that would also be a joke. The rest is all pretty much about a packing aid you could use as a swing. 2400 is the minimum height for a ceiling here and then I took 4000 just as a width since I don't think you would get much tighter than that (although it is possible). (sigh) maybe I shouldn't be joking about stuff like this. To sum it up, Don't use a car battery or a cement bag as packing weights and don't drink or smoke or take a break while packing. hmmm, déja vu? Sounds good. Even if it's one jump off Angel Falls it's worth it in my opinion. I suppose that as long as you're not in a bus with 50 other people and a very effeminate guy at the front running a commentary on every monument you drive past (not that there is anything wrong with that of course, maybe when i'm 87 it will be cool...). Thanks for that post Mike. It's great having someone like you chime in here and I see you are posting more frequently which is great. If you havn't already, I suggest you have a look at 'The Parachute Manual' Vol 1 and 2 by Dan Poynter. There is some very good stuff in there and as well as being good reference, it is interresting to read. This is what is written regarding the appearance of hand deployed pilot chutes: "With the introduction of Bill Booth's Wonderhog system in 1974 came the "pull-out pilot chutes" and "throw-out pilot chutes". Since both are springless, neither one contributes much to the weight or volume of the pack. Further, the elimination of a compressed spring inside the pack means pack shaping devices such as bow stiffeners and pack opening bands may be eliminated." There's quite a bit more but I think the above reasons are basically why the change came to be. Of course these manuals aren't the be all and end all, but they usually provide decent answers. Maybe somebody else could add to this. Again, thanks for the post; It's been copied and archived.

Wow, almost 50/50 at this stage. I had a mentor. No 1st jump courses here, and even if I had had the $ I would have rather gone for a rigging course in the States. My mentor stopped jumping after a cliff strike. Pitty because he was an awesome guy to have around on jumps. Coincidently, that cliff strike jump was 980's first jump here. I remember, both Sam and I had about 100 jumps at the time. Now he is somewhere up there with 500 jumps where I can't see him anymore and still being modest about it... Pretty cool. Sad story. Edit: just checked the Soweto stuff further on the same page after writing the following. There's been something similar happening down here recently. Mainly in Johanesburg. A few kids got killed. Our metro system is useless and it's quite easy to keep the doors open or even climb out through the window. The ghetto kids get their moment of fame as train surfers. It's pretty impressive in a way and they each have different styles. They climb on the roof and dodge the cables and tunnels, hold on to the bar at the door and slide along the gravel, dodge oncoming trains... A lot of them when interviewed realized that they were doing something pretty hectic and all had lost friends doing it. The bums will never win Lebowski, the bums will never win!
