  1. Just saw it on the news in South Africa..... Johan, how can you justify this by saying that you have no control over what they do with the footage? I just don't buy it. In my opinion, with that many jumps, you knew exactly what you were doing from the start and that's not very cool. Getting paid for working on doing a jump in Mexico or China, a novelty jump where there are many other parameters involved than just the jump (Red Bull or no Red Bull), sure, but getting through a security system to burn somebody else's object and have it advertized all over the world..... Marc, littlestranger was referring to your profile sheet (ta fiche personelle). It's not comletely filled in. Littlestrangers is. It took me a while on that one but then again i'm a little slow sometimes. Many people on this forum understand your point and even agree with you but you're being a little too aggressive even to people who might not be your enemies. poc
  2. Well in the end it is about somebody with almost superhuman powers telling 2 humans how him and an ex-foreign legion friend did it. Then the 2 humans go out and try do the same, spot faaaar from over the exit, get lost and indeed are rude to the chopper pilot who has the heart to help them out. poc The bums will never win Lebowski, the bums will never win! 3. There's a misunderstanding here. Avery mentioned their friend. That's who I am talking about. As for the two guys who actually did the trip, will get more details. The bums will never win Lebowski, the bums will never win! Enfin j'ai trouvé: Bieeeen
  4. That pretty much sums up what i've heard of the guy. Will know more about this saga in a day or so.
  5. Their friend might be Eric Fradet. Never met him but he is a very accomplished skydiver (25000 jumps) and one of the pioneers of base in France. Indeed it would take a friend who never wants to see you again to give that sort of advice and there might be another side to the story. I heard this same story in a brief account through a french base jumper friend of mine and will try get more details. poc
  6. My wife (who was still my girlfriend and pregnant at the time) had a major freak out the day i received my Perigee Pro through the post. I had spoken about it, made my family aware of what i was getting into, but it seems that seeing the rig was when it hit home. It was a while before things calmed down but i didn't quit. You see, six months before this my sister had died in a skydiving accident. I was the first one to find her in a field near the landing area. My wife at first wanted nothing to to with skydiving never mind base jumping. On my side, I knew quitting skydiving would make no difference and only God could help me handle the pain and shock. I may be a bit of a tree hugger when it comes to base, but the whole walk up the mountain thing is as much part of it as the jump. Once in a while, when life just gets too much, a little solo off the E does a world of good. My wife has come to understand that despite the fact that she still doesn't like it. So her and i have the understanding that we both need our space. Otherwise, you end up getting on each others case, give up things you don't really want to give up and the relationship turns sower. Giving up base because you think it will help a relationship is not a good solution in my opinion. LIke with everything it's a balance of give and take. As for kids, our little 3 year old goes wild everytime she sees footage, jumps off the arm of the couch on to the couch in a perfect arch... I must admit i do have reservations but i would not be able to or allowed to keep her or my step daughter from skydiving or base jumping if that's what they want to do. If anything, having kids probably makes one a little more conservative in their approach. And that's a good thing for base right? At this stage, I get so much at every level from every single base jump that it is difficult to imagine ever quitting.
  7. Believe me, if you get married and have kids, you will NEED base. poc
  8. When i have to have a 'D' licence to jump an 'E' Or when i need a pro rating to jump a 'B' When my rig has to be TSO'd and be equiped with an AAD Mind you, even when BASA (South Africa) or USBA are formed and i have to pay annual fees to this and that organization, I probably still won't quit... BASE CANOPY

In English: We used PD reserves then because: - The canopies have excellent flight caracteristics (soft landings, good handling on breaks with accuracy style landings) - The material used is of stable and verified quality. Base canopies having evolved since it seems the ace and troll canopies have come closer in terms of flight caracteristics with maybe more consistent openings (than the PD). So at the moment I jump a Troll"

    BASE CANOPY

Ja know about the ace and black jack being manufactured by PD for quite a while now. This was 2 or maybe 3 years back, not so long ago that the soul flyers jumped here. There weren't any logos on the canopies but they did tell me they were modified PD reserves. I asked because all 3 openings they had on a 3 way off our local slider down 'e' seemed... well... dodgy. A more experienced local on the load also noticed this so it wasn't just my novice eyes. Suppose the best is to just mail them and ask for the whole story.

    BASE CANOPY

I don't know why exactly they opted to modify PD reserves, i suppose it's with Loic and them being sponsored by PD... What i do know is that Zun is far from stupid, and the same goes for Loic, Claude, the late Val and the others. A South African jumper well known to many us base jumpers did 300 jumps on a spectra lined tempo and only just recently purchased an ace. Modifying a reserve or any canopy is a very bad idea indeed but people in the soul flyers and tim o t league are sufficiently knowledgeable to decide for themselves. Selling modified gear over the internet is looking for trouble... poc The bums will never win Lebowski, the bums will never win! Enfin j'ai trouvé: Bieeeen

    BASE CANOPY

The Soul Flyers were (and maybe still are) jumping modified PD reserves. From what I saw and from what they told me when they visited they perform better slider up than slider down. Maybe it's one of those. Still different context and category of jumper i suppose. The bums will never win Lebowski, the bums will never win! Enfin j'ai trouvé: Bieeeen
  14. slack? You must be joking. Granted you do need the advice of a rigger once in a while but i am sure (if 283 is your base number) you realize and have realized long ago that this is not skydiving. This is almost common sense. Everybody at some stage between the ages of 5 and 10 was told not to touch the battery because it makes holes in your clothes... I'll say it again, when people come up with things like this, you've just got to drop your arms, crack a beer, sit on the case and cry... poc

    New rig..

Does the bottom of the rig get tied down somehow? If not wouldn't it flap with the lift and work the pilot chute out and then the bridle would wrap around the long bottom of the container and...? ok ok i have about 80% more jumps slider off than slider up and still not many in total and i am just wondering if you are tying the bottom of the container down somehow or if you don't feel the need to and why... thanks poc The bums will never win Lebowski, the bums will never win! slider

This is just a story i have been told but have never read anything about. An Italian base jumper was saved by having the slider on when the risers came loose on one side (probably some of you know the exact facts). A few local jumpers i know leave their slider on for this reason. My personal preference is to leave it off on slider down jumps. It just doesn't feel right having this thing lying around in the container even if some people argue that there has never been an incident. The other argument against taking it off is rigging error. it's no rocket science really. If you get distracted, you shouldn't be packing and if you don't know how to remove it you shouldn't be base jumping. poc

    Tree Rigging

well we could drag both types behind a car and see who's arm gets ripped off first with the least wobble. When you're isolated like we are in s.a. (with regard to base) you tend to build up a few preconcepts. Our knowledge base becomes inbred and we need some external input once in a whiie. It's good to get a bit of a wake up to blow those things away. The bums will never win Lebowski, the bums will never win! Enfin j'ai trouvé: Bieeeen

    Tree Rigging

Point taken. The Gargoyle does have a nice corner at the bottom for the bridle to get stuck in. It was Piers, a s.a. master rigger who died in a plane crash in Florida who told me this. His opinion was that the wraparound was stronger, but that it took longer to build. Some skydiving gear manufacturers took shortcuts by hotkniving the webbing instead of wrapping it. On the wraparound you then have 2 layers of type 7 and 2 layers of type 8. The perigee seems to have a single layer of type 8 going to the back, the cordura and then the 2 layers of type 8 from the lift web. I have done a lot of packing but i am nowhere near pretending to be as knowledgeable as a master rigger. From this info i can't help thinking that the wraparound not only takes longer because of the thikness of material involved but also seems stronger. Does this make sense or am i completely losing the plot?

UUUUUh! No the sam thing is 980, he is also South African but was talking about the Odyssey. I was just saying from the beginning that the gargoyle closes right over left and nicknitro pointed out that it 's first the left flap and then the right. But thanks for following the posts and pointing this out to us, your contribution was real helpful. poc
