I second that. I think it's a good mental exercise to be thinking about it. I'm new and through all these posts I've realized that most of the people have made personal modifications of their own to decision parameters, procedures and limits that are quite different from the AFF laid down specifics. Ofcourser as experience builds up that is bound to happen but these questions and their discussions give some good insights to new jumpers like me regarding how different people analyze situations and adapt to them. Sort of adds to the knowledge base.

Just curious to know if Tandem Instructors at a DZ operation have to pool in one of thier own tandem rigs or do they just use the ones at the DZ. Also my understanding is that they are certified by the manufacturers. If true then how do they work at a DZ that may not have that particular rig for which they are certified.

It's just a guess, but I think it should be the risers because: 1.) You have to cut through much less 2.) there will be fewer loose ends dangling around when the canopy tries to get away from the plane. Just a guess, correct me if it's not the reason. I would be interested in knowing it too.

I think I just put it in the wrong forum. Sorry about that.

Ok ! this is probably a silly one but anyway the question is how do you define a Home DZ. Would it be where you learn't or is it where you skydive the most.

Canopy with line twists under 1000 ft.
rendezvous replied to rendezvous's topic in Safety and Training
Let's say you have a canopy with line twist at 1000 ft ( for whatever reason that may be ) not all that controllable and you choose to deploy the reserve without cutting it away. Would that lead to the possibility of creating a down plane. If so wouldn't it be better to cutaway a uncontrollable line twisted canopy even if you are just under 1000 ft, and specially if you have a RSL which would bring out the reserve without too much time being wasted. I know RSL is not to be relied upon but in this case should it's existence be considered in the decision making process. -
Canopy with line twists under 1000 ft.
rendezvous replied to rendezvous's topic in Safety and Training
If you have a canopy with line twists under 1000 ft do you cut it away, do you untwist or do you simply pull the reserve. This is assuming it's not spinning. Actually would like the opinions on the case when it's spinning too. I'm a beginner so I'm not under high performance chutes and high wing loadings. -
You cannot blame either because if they are in the business of making money then they are automatically part of a capitalistic system, well atleast in the US. Now, how they make their money is a matter of business strategy. If DZ(A) chooses not to take a deposit but DZ(B) does, then A is making itself more competitive in the market. The price it pays for that is that it takes on a higher risk. It's making itself more competitive simply bacause it wants to take away DZ(A's) business. If DZ(A) counter's that by bringing down it's price then there's nothing unethical about it. It's just trying to offset the risk that has been imposed upon it by DZ(B's) move of not taking a deposit. In essense 'B' is cashing on providing more flexibility to it's clients while 'A' is cashing in on a better price. End of the day both are trying to work on their botton line, and that is essentially what it will be in a capitalistic system. If there is a DZ(C) that can provide both, lower prices and more flexibility then it will run both A and B into the ground. Doesn't mean that C is now a bad guy in the game. If you don't want C do be able to do that then you need to protect A and B. Which essentially means you are going into a socialistic pattern. Now ,there's nothing wrong with that. Just that in the US that's not the business model you vote for.

If you don't want to drive out that far there's Sky's the Limit and Skydive Jersey Shore and Skydive Sussex. Sky's the limit being the bigger one of the three. They have a Caravan. All three of these are in NJ and withen one hour of driving distance from Manhattan.

_____________________________________________________ I'd hate to work in an industry that promotes the practices you just described... _____________________________________________________ I would hate to see the skydiving industry work like that too how ever thats what capitalism is. For things not be done any differently you would need a socialistic or communistic pattern. It's just the mechanics behind the economics.

what would be the minimum height you would jump from if your rig has a bungee cord collapsable pilot chute.
-
that is what interests me too. Also I do realize that you should go with what you were taught but as a beginner since you aren't at a point where it's already etched into your mind is it more beneficial to use the second and start practicising it or stick to the two hands on one handle procedure.
-
What are your opinions on the cutaway and reserve pull procedures for those new to the sport. Should they go along with the one in which both hands are used to cutaway while looking at the reserver handle and then both hands on the reserve, or the one where one hand is on the cutaway and one on the reserve handle. I was reading in the book Skydiver's survival guide that the second method is not recommended unless you have 300 jumps or a cutaway.

How much of an affect if any does S folding the lines in the pouch as oppose to using rubber bands to stow them have on the deployment time. I understand that reserves typically deploy much faster than the main. Am I right on that. If so, does that have anything to do with the use of the free bag or is there something else to it too.
-
what film would this be ? I'm very new here so I don't really know what all exists out there.
-
When the lines from the pouch are extracted all in one go doesnt their sudden extension at terminal cause some kind of a slamming action on the jumper. Also is there any possibility that the lines may get knoted when they leave the pouch or is there something done to prevent that from happening.
-
How differently are the lines stowed on a reserve. Is it true that only locking stows are made on it, the rest of the line is packed in a pouch. If so why isn't a similar thing adopted for the main. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the two techniques.

Hi guys, I've been trying to look for a Bungee Jumping operation and would like to know if you know of any close to New York City in NY or in New Jersey. Thanks. I've tried to search the web but haven't found any.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Personally, I recommend everyone use one until they get to 200 jumps and/or have their first cutaway from a spinner. At that point they will have the experience to make a good judgement on their own. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Couldn't agree more on that. I think when going through a mal the stress levels are much higher, and jumpers who are still relatively new to the skies need to be very careful in how they rate their abilites when things just aren't going their way before they choose to disconnect the RSL. Sporting experience and maturity ttakes time to develop.

No, I have the expert Cypres ( thats what the non student cypres is called, right ). With the front risers doesn't the descent happen at the steeper angle than what the normal glide angle for descent would be.

I have 48 jumps so keeping that in mind I would appreciate some insight to this. My last jump I missjudged the wind as it was quite calm down below and opened up downwind. At 3000 ft the wind was so strong that I had no penetration at all. It held me there until I was at about 1000 ft and about the the same distance from the perimeter of my DZ landing area. Basically saying that from 3000 to 1000 ft I had no movement at all and then the wind mellowed down and I started moving. Anyway I choose an alternate area and landed. My question is what kind of options does a guy with my experience level have in a situation like that. How could I have been able to get some penetration to get a little close to the DZ considering I had altitude. Is trying the front risers out one of such options. If the canopy is being held by the wind will they be able to give penetration. I didn't use them since I thought for the little speed that I gained I would loose altitude too so I just used the extra altitude to look for a nice alternate and then try and position myself for it all the while trying not to let the wind come on my tail and take me further away.

thanks for all you comments. I'll follow up on them.

I'm intertested in learning more about some basic parachute aerodynamics, parachute design and constructions and maintenance. To that extent are these books Parachute Manual, Vol 1 and Vol 2 By Dan Poynter worth any thing and specially worth their price. If so which volume would extensively cover modern day canopies including reserves and mains and the rest of the equipment. From what I understand it's vol 2. In that case what would I miss if I wasn't to get vol 1. Advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Are there any books that cover aerodynamics as applied to ram air parachutes. I would be quite interested in reading about it. May be a simplified version which is still technical enough.

I'm sure it'll be his dream come true !
