  1. Haha, everyone seems so much more confrontational than me. I guess im still in the camp of I only have a little over 200 jumps and this guy probably has 1000s so what do I know, so I didnt think to tell him off right there. I still looked, and im alive . Everyone has made me feel so much better though about the whole incident.
  2. No green light, or light at all. Just the pilot yelling door. On the first jump I literally looked down as I opened the door. On the second, the comment was initiated because I was looking through the plastic door to find the DZ at about 1000 feet until exit. I fully understand the long exit thing as I have had bad spots from 4 ways spotting for a while and then taking forever to climb out. I just really cant think of a reason why this person would say not to look at all ever. This is not a cessna either, its a moderately large turbine jump plane.
  3. I had something happen today that really made me quite upset. I jump at a couple of different dropzones, and today I was first out, opened the door, looked down for a second (literally maybe one second) and exited the plane. On the next jump, first out again, a jumper employed by the DZ said to me, "why do you look down before you exit, when the pilot yells door that means open the door and get out of the plane" I responded "I always check the spot to make sure we arent off." He seemed very aggravated by this and said "No one in the plane is waiting for you to make sure its ok, no one back here trusts you, we trust (pilots name) just open the door and get out." I didnt pursue the matter anymore to say that I check the spot for ME not for anyone else, and yes, I will check the spot before I exit and aircraft, and proceeded to on that jump. Ive seen this person be rude to other people at various times, but this seems just plain dangerous. If I had been a jumper with 30 jumps and was told never to check the spot, I would probably think thats the right thing to do. I dont think ill be frequenting that DZ again. Am I wrong in feeling upset by this? Id love to hear if anyone else has been yelled at for checking the spot.
  4. Almost exactly 3k using AFF (got away with more solos than coach jumps) and an awesome deal on gear.
  5. The best thing is that I want to be an ortho and all the ones that I work with love the jokes. How do you keep a secret from an ortho surgeon? Publish it.
  6. Haha yah I wish. Anyone near Sac got a BASE rig they arent using at this very moment
  7. Ive been studying for the last 4 days straight for my first round of final exams in medical school and my mind is shot. Anyone have any words of wisdom to keep my going?

    Book Fees

Half.com has good used texts. Having two advanced science degrees and working on a 3rd, Ill tell you that the biggest waste of money is buying books for the classes that profs give out lecture notes/readings for. I cannot tell you how many classes ive taken where I read 0 pages of the book. Make sure you need them before you buy them, ask people that took the class, and if they say, oh I used it a couple of times, go to the library like people said before
  9. I disagree with the sabre2 vs triathlon statement. If you can, get a rig without a main, and then demo a few canopies so you can open yourself up to whats out there, but do always stray toward the bigger side for canopies at first. The good thing for you is that youre big, so your dropzone should have big gear that they might even let you throw a demo canopy in for a few jumps. I think its really important to get to know the size of canopy youre comfortable with before you go and buy a container, and wind up with something youd assume would be right, but is way small, or way big.
  10. New Wing Suit Design This thread caused me to google.
  11. To me, the first AFF jump felt completely differnt than the tandem I did a few weeks earlier. Better in pretty much every single way. You are in more control of your body, and obviously your canopy once you open it. Just relax and pay attention during the course and be able to summarize the important parts to yourself. After my course I couldnt tell you what the names of every malfunction were, but I knew what to look for over my head, and to get rid of something that didnt look like I wanted it to. There will be a lot going through your head, but just make sure to try to have some fun too! Good luck!!!
  12. Yah I cant think of anyone coming up to me and raving about how windows is the greatest thing ever. More likely, people say, well I learned to use windows, and that was so hard that I dont want to have to start over to learn something else. And yes, I am a Mac Evangelist! This thread seems to be a good example. Get a Mac because it has wxy and z. No, get a dell because mine hasnt crashed yet.
  13. I just cant help myself http://www.apple.com/getamac/ads/ but I havent ever made a clicky on here
  14. My biggest testimate to mac vs. pc is that i dropped my ibook and cracked the screen. Free of charge, i had a new screen installed and returned in less than 72 hours, including the shipping from illinois to california. My girlfriend had a brand new dell, which got a virus, crashed, and they kept for 3 months trying to fix. Two weeks after she got it back it crashed with the same problem. It seems like PCs just slow down over time because of viruses getting backlogged and spyware. Ive had my ibook for 5 years, which is eons in computer time, and it still runs all the software I need just as fast as when I got it. For anything that freezes, you will come to love the force quit option. My current desktop has been on for 37 days and I only have to restart it when I install new software updates. I will give PCs the fact that there are better games for windows, but im not really a gamer. So if you are an uber cool warcraft player, please get a dell.
  15. I may be slightly biased as my family now owns 9 apple computers and about half a dozen ipods, but mac is by far the way to go. If you have an apple store near you, get the procare plan and you an go in for lessons on any program you want. Im in med school and it runs every single app i could possibly need, i edit video on final cut and imovie HD, use itunes, and garage band to compose music. I dont know who said dells are better for media, but thats pretty much what apples are designed for (aka inspiration for the apple vs. pc commercials). The new macbooks also have built in cameras for both stills and video conferencing which is more useful than you think. Apples are a little more expensive but i guess its the same thing as buying a 15 year old canopy with 800 jumps on a line set or a brand new one, you get what you pay for. Feel free to PM me if you want more details as ive switched many friends, and none have regretted it. Oh yes, and if you really love constantly crashing windows programs that much, the new intel macbooks will run windows too.
  16. Another thing that should be brought up is the type of helmet being used. The padding in my mindwarp makes it incredibly comfortable and incredibly quiet. I can hear my audible really well but I dont know how much I would like it if I had it in a pro tech and my audible was strapped basically straight to my ear.
  17. I can never say enought about PD and customer support. Nothing like an email 4 months after my last demo asking me how things were going, and making reference to a joke I made at the time of the demo
  18. When I was a student jumping a sabre2 i had a "quick" opening that kind of made my legs sore. I got to the ground and told my instructor and they said, you didnt have a hard opening, youll know when you have one. about 100 jumps later, pilot chute to instant canopy on a sabre1 with my chin getting split open by my chest strap buckle. Its only done that once, so my deffinition of a hard opening is a opening that makes you think about selling the canopy if it happens more than once or twice.
  19. "If a student goes backward she shouldn't be jumping or spot better to avoid landing out if she has a few more jumps. I learned on 288-230's and never landed out on a jump with one of those (~ 50 jumps, at a wl of 0.5 or so) even in higher winds. " ------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the midwest here in the fall ground winds can be a lot different from uppers. A 102 lbs girl on a 290 will go backwards, no matter what the spot if the winds are almost anything. You must have had some crazy long spots or incredibly strong arms to get a perfect landing on every spot.
  20. Just wondering what people have at their local DZs for student gear. My ex started jumping not too long ago and the DZ she jumps at only has 230s and 290 with rip cords, so she never jumped a wingloading over .5 until she came to visit me. I was lucky enought to learn on fairly new javelins with BOC throw out and sabre 2 mains when I was ready for them and I kind of thought this was standard. I actually think its kind of dangerous for her to be jumping that light of a wingloading as she went backwards on several of her jumps resulting in landing out. Its difficult for me to help her find gear as she only has a couple of jumps on anything thats not 100 sq ft above a 135 that she would be loading at .95.
  21. Depends what youre looking for. Skydive Chicago is huge and has great facilities and lots of people there all the time. Sky Knights in East Troy, WI is a lot more homey feeling still with awesome people, and its closer to milwaukee.
  22. Technically "diving" over the bar as most people mean it involves taking off with two feet, which is why it is illegal. There was reports that a chinese gymnast cleared 8 feet by doing back handsprings up to the bar and then flipping over, but that involves a two foot takeoff to therefore is illegal. Dont really understand what would be any more dangerous about diving over the bar though. Sorry to hijack this thread again but I kind of had to, what do you think hjumper stands for
  23. Yah, id like to stop having to go up to people, especially ones that werent on the jump, and ask them to validate my existence. I suppose I would want to sign my own logbook for the same reason I wouldnt fudge my jump numbers, theyre my jumps, and i did them for me.
