I think his point was that forced busing for social purposes / demographic balancing is costly and wasteful... bus a bus load of kids from school A's district to school B (say 20 miles), and a bus load from school B's district to school A (another 20 miles), instead of busing those same kids to the school that they are closest to (say 10 miles for each group)... any way you cut it, its half the gas. Not exactly... there was and Executive Order (which is further propogated in to DOD and other Branch regulations) that lays out how and when DOD Intellignece Activities may conduct domestic operations, or operations that involve "US Persons" (which means US Citizens or known perminent resident aliens status)... generally it prohibits collection against "US Persons" both domestically and internationally... and generally limits operations to that of collecting foriegn intelligence and counter-intelligence... Given that Atta was a foriegn national, under the control of a foreign group, and not a US citizen or perminent resident alien, he did not (or should not) have "US Person" status... so collecting and diseminating information on him should not have caused any legal problem, and if in the course of collecting and processing the information on him revealed that he was operating inside the US, the FBI (who is responsible for domestic intelligence) should have been notified, and in fact may have been required to be notified. Just because it becomes a domestic matter does not mean you close the file and shove it in the drawer... It sounds like the floating iris issue... There are two ways to fix the problem... don't film upwards, or get a different camera. The only thing that I have seen that will reduce (not eliminate) the shifting is to manually set your white-balance rather than let the camera do it in auto... in all seriousness, if you are going to shoot upwards, this is not the right camera. So you've got none, huh? Perhaps I don't understand your definition of "a threat", or maybe its "global"... I do not see other religions propagating violence at indiscriminate targets on a trans-national level in the name of their religion... I'm sure there is anecdotal cases of it, but to put it on the same scale what we see from islam... Is the religious right trying to gain more influence here in the US, sure, but it is through a peaceful democratic process... is it a threat on a global scale, not really. Are there some jews who don't want to move and are willing to use violence to resist, yes... but that is as much about land (if not more so) as it is about their religion... perhaps this one has more of global impact given where it is, but it is far from being as wide spread as is the islamic threat. So instead of being condescending, you could point to the great threats you see from other religions, obvious or not... That would be the general argument... they are either, or... not neither... to further the problem, who's laws are the governed by? If they were picked up in Afgan, then they should be given rights under afgan law, and adjudicated by such, if Pakistan, the same, if in the US, etc... which is why we should have never taken them out of theater... by taking them in to US custody, AND within US jusisdiction (which Gitmo is, like it or not) you have to pick, EPW or illegal combatant... at least in theater there is a grey area, where one can still be determining the appropriate status... day by day, I have to say I cam coming to the opinion that if they want a holy war, give it to them... islam v. the rest of the world... the gloves have yet to really come off, and it is nearing the time that they do... No, hence the problem we are facing over there now... every member of the Iraqi armed forces should have been inturned, perhaps the police and civilian leadership too... We did not go in with sufficient forces to do that... even though just about anyone below the rank of COL knew that was what was needed... As for the folks nabbed in Afganistan, if they were captuted by US forces while fighting, hold them until the hostilities are over... if they were turned in by "warlords" as suspected taliban or AQ for a reward rather than being captured in battle, their status should be determined by some sort of hearing... becasue at least some of those "warlords" are playing both sides of the fence, and saw it as an opportunity to get rid of folks they didn't like.
