  1. Saturday 8:00 AM/SW Side- Winds are still gusty, but are from the SW to WSW... radar is strarting to clear up too... I haven't outside yet, but no evidence of damage from the inside... I lost power for about a minute at about 6AM, but it came right back... a few blips earlier, enough to make the UPS start beeping, but didn't effect the TV... DirecTV and cable modem stayed up all night... Winds really picked up about 3AM, enough to move our guests into our "safe" area as a precaution (5 cats in 500 s.f. was kinda interesting for a little while) All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  2. From the SW corner of the loop... Sunset was pretty cool... winds getting a little gusty... light rain... J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  3. I'm at the house, South loop and Stella Link... the wind is picking up, no rain yet... All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

  5. No, it is like your run of the mill gift card... $2K to send where you like... Some of the more egregious uses have been lois viton (sp?) bags from the Galleria, and visits to one of the many fine gentleman's clubs here in Houston... Are most people using them for what they were intended? Probably. Are some people abusing them? Absolutely. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

  7. The jewish people who lived in that region before the creation of israel are Palestinians... they just call themselves israelis now. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  8. He fraudulently represented himself as being straight... lots of speculation that he plays for the other team... J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  9. There has never in history been a country called Palestine... it was the historical name for the region, but not a country... J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  10. That is a mighty big assumption... I don't care if there is a reference to God in the pledge, on a building, or on our money... I don't think that those things, in and of themselves, rise to the level of establishing a state religion (which is one of the things the 1st prohibits)... The DofI is a founding document, it says what it says and there is nothing that can or should be done to change that... but also recognize that the DoI was written before the Consitution and Bill of Rights... the instrament used to separate us from Britan is not the same instrament used to establish how our government is to work. I don't think our money should be changed, or buildings modified, it would be a waste of money... I don't have a problem with the 10 Commandments being displayed in a courthouse, becasue in a historical context, they are part of the foundation of our legal system. Again, I don't care if "under God" stays or goes, its a non-issue to me... from a legal standpoint, there is probably a better argument for it not being there... the judge should have just said the '54 law adding "under God" was unconstitutional and that the original must be used if recited in school, rather than saying you can't say the pledge in school. 11. What in my post gave you the impression that I would think that is a good idea? I don't think changing an original founding document is a good idea... where as I am not overly opposed to changing something that did not exist before the 40's and was last changed in the 50's... I do have a problem with where do you draw the line from a practical stand point... phase out IGWT from the currency, OK, wholesale change costing a bunch on money, no. Religion is a personal thing, or should be... the faithful should not need the government to maintain their faith, and the non-beleivers (or believer in something else) shouldn't have it forced upon them by the government either. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  12. Which will be the removal of "In God We Trust" from our currency... Removing "under God" from the pledge is easy, and I don't really have a problem with doing it, but removing "IGWT" from currency is much harder from a practical sense... it will cost a ton of money to change the currency in a wholesale manner... I don't think either of these uses of God rises to the level of establishing a state religion though. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  13. My understanding was, no standing = no case regardless of the merits, which is why Newdow had to go out and find some parents with standing to bring a new case. And I don't think the judge was refering to the SCOTUS decision from the 40's since she mentioned the 9th's precedent being what bound her. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  14. OK, you are a lawyer type... Didn't the last case get overturned (due to lack of standing of Newdow) by the SCOTUS? And since the 9th's ruling was overturned, there is no precedent to bind the judge, right? J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  15. Gitmo v. Abu Ghraib... and as for the photos from Abu Ghraib, they were not "displayed" by the government, they were obtained by the media and released... I'm in no way excusing the behavior... J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

  17. Then perhaps you should have called the thread "Is FEMA Jamming Communications..." You title presumes the article is true... J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  18. I'll bet someone could find a judge to stop the pumping due to the environmental damage it is causing... J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  19. On a side note... Its kinda poetic, the choice of general, and why Nagin likes him... Honore is a cajun through and through... I served with him when he was a lowly COL back in 3ID... He used to have field cooking competitions between units under his command, and he was one of the cooks, as well as the judge... He's a no nonsense kind of guy, although he does like to hear himself talk sometimes... I'm surprised they have not had to bleep him out on a news conference yet, he used to cuss like a sailor... One word of advice to anyone working for or around him, don't complain about being tired or hungry, he'll slap you in the face with a "whinner card". 20. Perhaps you did not WRITE it, but you post sure did suggest it... AND, I don't think it is that perposterous at all, given what I have seen out of NO's mayor and LA's governor. As dumb as many think GWB is, they are for sure dumber. Edit to add... did GWB save NO? No. Did the maditory evacuation of NO save a significant number of people? Absolutely. Did, GWB have something to do with the manditor evacuation? I don't know, but if, as the blogger's post suggests, he did, than he did have a hand in saving the lives (and sure he got his info from NOAA, who got data from the AF, and who's sats were put in orbit by NASA, and they sent the info over the internet that was invented by Al Gore, yada, yada, yada) J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  21. I have not seen anywhere where he has not given NOAA their props... but politcal officials are the ones that make the call on evacuations, not NOAA... none of the NHC's public advisories say evacuate. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  22. Umm, congress created DHS... and the blame comment was not directed specifically at you... and for the record, I didn't see where GWB took any credit at all. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  23. Must throw the bullshit flag here... the levees have been a problem for 30 years... we have had a few presidents over that time... also, the state and city governments were aware of the problem and should have had a contingency plan for it. There have been plety of screw ups in this, but to point the finger soley at the federal governement is narrow minded. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  24. So, GWB is responsible for FEMA and DHS, and their "failures", but not NOAA and their "successes"? J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  25. I find this to be an intersting statement... J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
