    I hear a lot of numbers being tossed around, but the way I see it is this: There is no difference in the cost of the intitial trial except for an incramental cost for the penalty phase... Differnces in the cost of incarceration: - General population vs. Death Row Solitary - Time of incarceration - Natural death vs. Executiuon Differnces in th number of appeals (assuming that each appeal costs the same): On average, how many appeals are there in a non-DP murder 1 case vs. the average number of appeals in a DP murder 1 case. I don't know what dollar amounts can be tied to each of these, but they appear to me to be the only "opportunity costs" that could be compaired.     I was a direct report for more than one operation, and have been present in plenty of meetings with him and his bosses... He was always a straight shooter... as for the aid getting a good seat for a general, thats fairly common... I've seen LTs have their PSGs score them an advantagous seat for meetings, its also fairly common with execs in the business world, even to the point of adjusting the seat height.     Well, Mosul is in the North, but is not entirely Kurdish... When did those problems start anyway? Seems like it was around the time we went in to Falluja... And since its not likely to be the Kurds, and we haven't been bombing or kicking in doors up there, it must be Sunnis that don't feel they have a place at the table, or ex-regiem cronies...     So what are those? How do you know? My opinion is that the majority of them are fighting because they have lost their favored position with the government, or they feel they have no place at the table... that's based on where they are concentrated... you don't see huge problems in the South, or in the Kurd areas... are some of them fighting becuase we kicked in their door, probably... but I don't think it is the majority... and lets not forget about the ones that aren't even Iraqi...     I'm well aware of that, and so is the army... but supply units are supply units, their vehicles have soft skins, and there is not much that can be done about it... I agree that they are using HMMWVs in ways that they were not designed, and that ought to be looked at... Maybe they ought to be pulling APCs out of PrePo stocks, instead of waiting on armor kits...     I agree... but the reality is that you have to have soft skin vehicles... its hard to haul supplies in an IFV... the problem are not enough resources to provide security for every convoy, and the media has convinced the REMFs that they have to have armor... it would be nice if everyone could go to war in a tank, but that's not reality.     Yes there was some poor planning, or more accurately not sticking to the good planning that was in place... We may not have needed all the up-armored vehicles if we had started off with more forces... but the whole body armor and up-armored vehicles thing has been an issue for years... the need for individual body armor, and more protection in vehicles was identified in Somalia... The Clinton Administration did not make it a priority... So we went to Iraq with the army we had... and now they are playing catch-up, an d so are the production lines.     Were at one of the ones at Shepard and W. Grey? Or, is their another pair across the street from each other? There are too many of them, they are over priced, and on top of all that I think their coffee sucks. I try to avoid them if I can, unfortunately my wife likes their hot chocolate (which can be OK) so I have to visit once in a while.     Officers can get the money up front (scholarships or academy)... college courses taken while on active duty are paid 75%... student loan repayment is 1/3 per year... if the individual was on a 2+2 or a 4+2 contract they may have already received money... not sure what this dirt bag's story is... but once you sign, and are sworn in for the second time... you are uncle sam's. I had an opportunity to visit Pearl Harbor a little over a month ago... oil still seeps up from the USS Arizona... a very solemn place.     There is a saying that is fairly common in military circles... when I was a Platoon Leader, and on a BN Staff I had it painted on the wall, so that my troops would keep it in mind as they went about their duties... It was something to the effect, "May the blood of an infantryman flow through your veins, so that it may not drip from your fingers." I know guys that worked in the CJCS's office, and they had it posted above the door... troops in the field are not numbers to the majority of those guys, they are their brothers in arms.
