  1. Its not a question of morals, but ethics... under the utilitarian theory of ethics, turning ones head to the sale to those particular countries served a greater good, and therefore could be considered ethical... the personal enrichment bunch's activities served the individual and the dictator, to the detriment of the greater good, and therefore could be considered unethical... And if you want to go to the legal question, the US government has not be shown to have participated in or facilitated any of these sales, therefore did not violate the sanctions... 2. Go check out the Apple Discussion boards (here)... On the HD from your old machine, pull it out of the old machine and get a FW or USB enclosure, and drop it in... plug it in and bang, you should have all your old data and a nice expansion for the iMac... 3. Yes, yes they are... but not just due to OFF... But in this case it goes to a question of intent... the US let some of this go on to help some key allies with some basic economic needs... In the UN's case it was either from lack of oversight, or for personal enrichment. Are there some US companies and individuals who did it for personal enrichment? I'm sure there are, but that is different than the US governement materially participating in it. And if you look at who from the governement is squaking about the UN and OFF, its not the administration, its congress, and probably not perople who saw these reports (although I don't know that). Who didn't know SH was smuggling oil? The scandle is that it appears UN staff were getting rich off it. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  4. Not quite... If we were at war with Iran, and Iran had occupied Iraq, then it would match up. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  5. I had to replace mine in December...grrrr. The new one is better than the one I had, but not as nice as the ones just annoucned... oh well, maybe when my wife gets a new one. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  6. That's bigger than most, if not all, of the polling for the presidential elections. It is a disturbing stat... Looks like more classes on the Consitution are needed for some kids... although the headline is missleading... it could just as easily have read "students: Freedom of Press just right" J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  7. Maybe not this particular non-case, but the issue of compliance with the WPA has been discussed here... The President has reported to congress, and congress authorized action, and continues to do so through appropriations. I guess that's why the courts have found no cause of action... 8. $23.6K J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  9. You're a little off... an E-5 over 3 with a dependant living off post will make $34.3K ('05 paycharts)... base pay for an E1 under 4 months is $13.7K... you get a raise at 4 months, and if you're enlisting as an E-1 that's your fault (you can make E-2 easy, and E-3 with a little effort before you even ship out.) But your point still holds true... if you joined up thinking you were going to make it rich, you're in the wrong line of work... there are a host of other benifits (training education money, etc.) that may help you make it rich when you get out, but not while your in... 10. What about the civilian who point them to the right cave? Does he get the whole pot, a split, or nothing? J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  11. When a hurricane comes to town, the stores sell out of D-cells... there are still plenty of C-cells... You can put used cypress batteries (with all the external stuff removed) into any C-cell appliance and have a long life out of them... you could have more than half of the life left in the batteries when you pull it out of the Cypres. 12. Well, at least the Brits and Italians... Although it is not the first time the US military has bought a foreign weapon system, it is the first time it will be the Presidential Transport (Marine One)... J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  13. Only a country can declair war in a legal sence... if a country declairs war then attacks "legal" targets yes... they should also be prepaired for the consequences. If we were to attack them without warning, that would be unacceptable... It would be hard to say Iran has not been warned. Edit to add... that said, I don't think we should be posturing as we are with Iran at the moment, at least not on the nuke issue (terrorism is another issue)... we should continue to work diplomatic channels... Syria should understand very clearly that their support of terrorism has put them on the edge and the ball is in their court to back away from it. 14. I do not believe we should engage in sabre rattling... we should be up front and honest in our expectations and what our interests are... for that matter I think we have been with both Iran and Syria. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  15. I know they are not the same questions... A preemptive sneak attack al la Pearl Harbor or 9/11 is not acceptable... a "back off or your gonna get hit" preemptive strike against targets that are threatening them (say a division massing for invasion) could be. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  16. If they want to stop an invasion (not saying that one is iminent), a preemptive strike would not be the way... as any strike would ensure an invasion... any strike that would stop an invasion, would result in something worse, and they know it. If they want to stop an invasion, take away any remote justification... stop supporting terrorists for example. 17. Correct, not all employers get to choose who they want (and there is another active thread discussing the merits of that particular issue)... but in this case the, the employer gets to exclude behaviors (not genetic qualities) that it does not want. 18. No... they should understand the risk, and be prepared to deal with it should it come up. If they are considering employment with this company, and their spouce smokes, they should fully understand what methods are used for testing, what triggers testing, and what their vunerability is before taking the job. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  19. Sentiment like that (someone owes me) is what keeps groups from fulfilling their potential. It also promotes other groups to resent and resist groups that hold that sentiment. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  20. This is NOT a governmental action... it is a private company that the individuals involved can either choose to work for, or not. If someone whose spouce smoked worked there, they should understand the risk that their spouce is imposing on them. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  21. No one is saying you can't smoke, but non one says I have to employ you, and bare the burdern of your health care, either. 1) Due process applies to the government... 2)The employees were told two years ago of the policy change... there was ample opportunity for them to change their behavior, or seek other employment. There is no Michigan or Federal law that governs a company from establishing and enforcing this employment policy. The legal definition of discrimination encompasses things that people have no control over (race, color, sex, age, yada, yada, yada)... you can decide to smoke or not to smoke. Its just another condition of employment... you can either accept it and work there, or not accept it and work somewhere that allows smokers. 22. Typical configuration is 38+crew... can do 55 with certerline seats... either way, the loss sucks. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  23. But the consitution applies to the government, not to private companies... many companies dictate behavoir while off the clock, as a condition of employment... you want a job, follow the employer's rules. Take for example, a DZ that says staff cannot date students, on or off the DZ... date one (and get caught) and you're fired... Does a DZ have the right to say that? I say they do... and I don't see a real difference in that and smoking. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
