  1. I've not had any problems with either of my PBs... using either a USB2 reader (on mhy 12") or PCMIA card (on my 15"). J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  2. I jumped a Pentax ZX-10 before I went digi... I used a Conseptus bite switch... Lewmonst outlined what you need to do to make the switch work... as for the connector, I've never has a problem with it blowing off in FF, just use a little gaffer's tape. 3. It's sad that there are 13 year olds stealing cars, but I can't say that I'm sad when I of them gets shot... Its probably reasonable to tell the cop to try to get out of the way, but to say there needs to be some other threat is a bit too much... how many times does a cop need to dodge the car before its OK to cap the guy? 4. don't know about the availability, but it looks like the body will be $899 US. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  5. If we called them POWs there would be no question about it... at normalization of relations, you return the POWs... we have not charged them with anything, so they are not our criminals... but they might be theirs, we don't know... and the US does not have a prohibition of returning someone that may face a death penanlty... and the other thing, they are not refugees, at least not in the US... they are detainees and illegal combatants... if they are terrorists, charge them, if not, send them back. 6. Obviously, its not a one size fits all, but it does fit the majority... those capured in other places should be looked at on a case by case basis... but the ones captured in Afganistan should be turned back over to that government, no matter what country they are from... 7. My first thought is to put a homing beacon up each of their asses... but thats probably not right... One would hope they would release the ones that ought to be... if there are ones that we don't think should be released, but are... maybe keep those guys and run the legal system here... or maybe an unfortunate incident during the transfer (j/k) Watch them, see where they go, what they do, yada, yada, yada. What have we done about the ones that we have released to their home countries that turned around and released them? 8. Since the treatment of detainees at Gitmo, and their legal standing in our court system seems to be a big can of worms, I've come up with a simple solution that prevents it from continuing to be a distraction from the war of terrorism... Repatriate them all back to were they were captured, Afganistan... turn them over to the newly elected Afgan government to deal with... if they are terrorists or taliban, who better to deal with it than the people who run the country they trampled... don't turn them back over to their country of origin, take them back to where they were plucked from, and let them face the music there. If there is intelligence value to be gained (after this long, I doubt it), our good friends in the Afgan government will surely share it with us. Seems simple enough to me. 9. bwahahahahaha! There are 17 (D) senators up for reelection in '06, and 1 (I)... only 14 (R) senantors... 5 of the (D) 17 are from states that Bush won... only 3 of (R) 14 are from states Kerry won... That doesn't look like a decent shot to me... looks more like 61 is possible for the (R)'s Perhaps not partisan, but ideological and activist... thats why the Dems are so concerned about the "balance" of the court not being upset. 14. If you go to the Sony site you can download the user manuals (for some models). The UM will give you what you want to know... the 1000 is a top loader, has a LANC port, but the fader is menu driven. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

  16. I see no issues with ID cards, metal detectors, or armed guards... School districts down this way have their own police departments. if you want to search cars, then make it a condition of parking it on campus (assuming you'd be requiring a permit)... There still may be some issues... whos cars are you going search? Students, parents, teachers... to say that the kids don't have constitutional protections is questionable in my mind, but the parents and teachers definitely do. Searches of lockers and bags should meet legal standards (meaning prob. cause, and done by law enforcement) so that if anything is found it can be used in court... if you want to get around this, take out the lockers, and only give them open "cubby holes" to put their stuff in (which will cut down on non-educational items)... Don't let them carry bags larger than is necessary for personal items (wallet, etc). You would have to give more time between classes so they could go to their "cubby hole" to get materials for the next class. If all this is reasonable or not depends on the situation... Some places already do some of these things. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  17. The collective right theory runs into problem as soon as you get the words "the people". As soon as you argue "the people" means the collective, you have problems with the rest of the amendments that use the same language (1st, 4th, 9th, and 10th)... If "the people" is a collective right in the 2nd Amendment, than it is in the 1st, meaning no free speech, the 4th, meaning no protection from unreasonable search and seizure, or the 9th and 10th, meaning no right to privacy (since these are the amendments the SCOTUS derived the right to privacy)... The ACLU will cease to have a basis for existence... from the 1st amendment to the 2nd, the phrase "the people" is only 29 words apart. It appears again only 45 words later in the 4th... All of the amendments were adopted at the same time, so the word must have the same meaning... if it is an idividual right in one, it is an individual right in all. Its hard to argue both sides of the coin, but the anti-gun folks never seem to stop trying... many of the rights they hold so dear (speech, privacy, abortion even) are all derived from the phrase "the people"... but hey, they want to call the 2nd a collective right... go figure, I guess guns are just that J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  18. Because the House and Senate are two different places, and just because the are both controlled by republicans, does not mean they have the same agenda. The Senate repubicans want to deal with the DL issue in conjunction with broader immigration reforms, so it will meet some resistance as a stand alone bill. No federal court, conservative or liberal, is going to allow the "no judicial review" language stand in any law... it violates the long standing principle of judicial review that all laws are subject to review, not just he ones congress says are OK... and the court is not going to let that go... They will see it as a intrusion into their constitutional powers (much like the gitmo detainee issue, the courts will decide who has standing, not the congress) given that this particular clause deals with building a barrier in California (9th Circuit) it will likely fall quickly (if it even makes it into the final law) J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
  19. Its not a law yet... The bill passed the House, and still needs to get through the Senate, which is not a given... there is really only one objectionable clause in the bill anyway, that won't stand up to the first law suit even if it does pass. Lots of agencies failed to connect the dots, but there is no evidence that there was anything the FAA had pointed to 9/11 in a direct way... Did they have blinders on that made them think a domestic attack was unlikely? Probably... but this is nothing new. 20. Well, its off to the senate for this one... we'll see what happens there... there was an amendment proposed today that would have stripped section 102 out, but it failed, too bad A little more on that section... it is actually a revision to another immigration law from '96 that allowed the SofJ to waive provisions of specific environmental laws, for a specific project... the waiver of ALL laws would still only apply to that project... its still the exercise of eminent domain powers without due process and apparently without compensation... and that ain't right.
