Private aircraft makes emergency landing on beach
regulator replied to regulator's topic in The Bonfire
Well first and foremost, I am not a pilot. However, I was thinking that if this were a new aircraft, couldn't he use the onboard instruments to continue to his destination, or would this aircraft not contain the correct type of instrumentation to 'fly blind'? -
Private aircraft makes emergency landing on beach

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,589402,00.html?test=latestnews HILTON HEAD, S.C. — A 38-year-old father of two was jogging and listening to his iPod when he was hit from behind and killed by a small plane making an emergency landing on the beach, officials said Tuesday. Robert Gary Jones of Woodstock, Ga., was killed instantly on Hilton Head Island on Monday evening, said Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen. The single-engine plane had lost its propeller and the pilot's vision was blocked by oil on the windshield, Allen said. Jones was married and had two children, the coroner said. "Apparently he did not see nor hear the plane," Allen said. "The plane was basically gliding." Hilton Head fire and rescue spokeswoman Joheida Fister said the identities of the pilot and a passenger on the Experimental Lancair IV-P plane were not released. The two were not injured. The plane started leaking oil at about 13,000 feet and tried originally to make it to Hilton Head Airport, Fister said. The oil on the windshield blocked the pilot's vision and he told authorities the propeller came off the plane. When he tried to land on the beach near the Hilton Head Marriott Resort and Spa, the plane hit the jogger and came to rest a little farther down the beach, she said. "I would have to say it's pretty unusual," Fister said. FAA records show the aircraft was registered to Edward I. Smith of Chesapeake, Va., with a certificate issued in 2004. Smith has a private pilot's license, according to FAA records. Nobody answered early Tuesday at a phone number listed for Smith and a message was not immediately answered. The plane left Orlando at 4:45 p.m. and was headed for Virginia, Fister said. The four-seater plane has a turbine engine, can be built from a kit and can fly up to 370 mph, according to the Lancair Web site. The IV-P model has a pressurized cabin. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating, Fister said. An FAA spokeswoman referred inquiries to the NTSB. -
Well in that case just wait until November of this year when the final chapter in the Halo franchise will be here. Halo: Reach. It should be rather epic.

I've really liked Timothy Olyphant since he was a ruthless drug dealer in the movie..'Go'

I had played Halo 3 for so long I almost excluded most shooters and only played Halo and Forza 3. But I finally bought MW2, and I like the game as much if not more than Halo. Halo has that stupid host system and its extremely unbalanced. If you get into a game and someone in there is from Spain and they get host...unless you live close to them you get screwed over every time. It came to where it wasn't fun anymore so I started playing MW2. However I have heard from my friends that Bad Company 2 is as much if not more fun than MW2, but I'm getting back to jumping this coming weekend and video games just got pushed down the list since skydiving will take more of my money, now that the weather is getting nice again

Radio Waves CAN travel at the speed of light, However radio waves are an example of electromagnetic waves (other examples include light, microwaves and x-rays) can all travel at the speed of light. However, their actual speed (called the propagation velocity) depends on two variables. One is called permeability and the other is called permittivity. Each variable's value depends on the material that the waves are traveling through. Basically, you can think of the variables as how "easy" it is for electic fields and magnetic fields to travel through the medium. If the waves are traveling in free space, they will always travel at the speed of light. Otherwise, the waves will travel slower. ------------------------------------------------------------- Guess I learned something. I'll just keep it at that. Dan if you drive to south Texas I'll wash your car..so spend about 300 dollars in gas for a free car wash. Now that sounds like a profitable deal.

Squeak...what time is it in Australia? Do you ever go to sleep? :)

Its so amazing how all of you can jump on my back when NONE of your names are Drew. Yeah I suck at math. Do I care? No. Does jumping on my back and riding my ass inflate your ego any more? Or perhaps your vision is getting worse in your old age because I was SURE in the first post I addressed a name that didn't say geriatric or Dan but Drew. And Dan caught me (kinda) the numbers aren't EXACTLY the same as the original post, but I told Dan I'd wash his car if he brought it to my house. Everyone else that jumped on my back go out and buy a saddle cause the ride's gonna get rough.
-
It doesn't matter since no car can outrun Motorola at 670,000,000 miles per hour. ----------------------------------------------------------------- C'mon Drew I know you probably know that the speed of light is 186,000 miles/sec ---------------------------------------------------------------- I could've sworn your name was Dan not Drew...and yes Dan I'll wash your car...bring it to my house.

the speed of sound through the standard atmosphere is 761 mph...but I'm sure if you were in the stratosphere where the air is thinner that could slightly fluctuate. (I don't for sure know I'm not a climatologist...just from what I've read)
-
Either you suck at math or I do but when I multiply 186,000 x 60= 11160000. Show me how you came up with your numbers.

Haha Good One! So you are saying that airwaves travel at the speed of light? Sounds like you'll be washing MY car!!:) I like it with LOTS of armour all..

Back to jumping after almost 2 years off

Skydive Spaceland offers A license in a week for $2,010.00 in 2010. Its an excellent drop zone several very nice aircraft (as in two Super Otters, A C182, and a Skyvan. But I will admit its a bit of a drive from RI. -
There are two kinds of people in this world I cannot stand...people who are intolerant of other peoples cultures....and the dutch. Nigel Powers (Austin Power's Father)

Or he was shaving his balls while his dog steered from the passenger seat. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Dude stop it! I almost pissed my new khakis from laughing at your post. Besides I'd let your dog shave my balls:)

It doesn't matter since no car can outrun Motorola at 670,000,000 miles per hour. ----------------------------------------------------------------- C'mon Drew I know you probably know that the speed of light is 186,000 miles/sec. The speed of sound is 761 mph depending on the atmosphere. If you have a PTT Motorola that can travel 670,000,000 miles per hour, I'll wash AND wax your car AND detail the interior. I'll be waiting...:)

I'm with DSE on this one...This is a total mal which means go straight for the reserve. Do not pass go. Do not go to jail...go to the reserve. (as in the instructor not being present so you are alone when this particular malfunction presents itself.:)

I didn't even see it! What a maroon!

Seriously what is the point of having a freaking zoo in china? They probably use it as a holding tank so they can kill all the animals and then eat them.
-
I suspect your stats are incorrect. I'm fairly certain the CO from far fewer joints in that time period would be enough to kill you. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Perhaps you can do a research study and come back to us with some results? And I'm not saying kill yourself, but how could you know for sure one way or the other?

Now you know what I went through last year waiting on FedEx to deliver my brand new Infinity container and PD Reserve from Square1.

Thats kinda funny....it reminds me of being in the army. While I was in the army about 70% of black males had 'shaving profile' meaning they didn't have to shave every day because their faces would get bumps all over. And this guy did it in freefall. Impressive.
