    Until people will recognize that regulation does not equal socialism and that regulation is needed in the financial industries, no lesson will have been learned. What we have really seen is the failure of a free market. What we have also seen is that industries have grown to a point where failure can lead to an entire country going bankrupt. Strong governmental oversight and regulation is now required. In a free market people will not do what is best in the long term, people will do what makes them the most money in the short term.

    In your haste to slam Quade you seem to have missed that he specifically highlighted who the majority shareholder is. Which really is the central point. But, I wouldn't want facts to get in the way of your little slam fest.

    Why not? The people doing the killing would be responsible. How do you reconcile the above with personal responsibility? Some might see the burning of the Koran as symbolic of a call to kill muslims.

    I asked about news not truth. Don't think I can point to one specific source. But I like to read (and watch some TV) Canadian, US and European news sources. It helps to understand more than one language.

    To answer the main question: I believe Terry Jones has no criminal responsibility. I do believe he has a lot of moral responsibility.

    If an American "Leader" claims that there will be a mushroom cloud if you don't invade a country. Should we blame him or the CIA when he invades and kills thousands based on "false information"?

    I'm Canadian, but I don't expect you to understand nuances though. So, the thousands who protested peacefully. Are they US or Them? (It's not as if the US doesn't have examples of peaceful protest turning violent)

    Oh, I don't think I would have come out of that one that easy. You missed the ongoing war in Iraq? There is no us and them. That's the exact attitude that's getting people killed.

    People in the US kill eachother almost daily for "disrespecting" some one. How many people in the western world would react violently if their buttons are pushed? How long would I have lived if I walked into a New York bar frequented by fire fighters in October of 2001 and loudly proclaimed that fire fighters are stupid and deserve to die? Just because the buttons are differently doesn't mean we are not inherently the same, with many of the same primal reactions.

    To some degree I understand the rest of your argument. However, I don't think you can compare the two products. Tobacco is seen as a hazardous substance, even one cigarette. Alcohol is still promoted as being healthy. One glass of red wine per day is supposed to be good for you.

    That may still be the case, the definition of best just got changed. As an extreme example, if a community is 100% black, would the best police force really be 100% white? Dayton, Ohio in 2000 was 54% white and 43% black. Unfortunately the story does not supply numbers on the racial makeup of the current police force. Having a police force which is representative of the community is an asset. Just imagine how Turtle would feel if his local police force was 100% made up of Mexicans.

    Don't think the world can be as binary as you might like it to be. American consumers are a product of the market and society they grew up in. One influences the other. There are societies that put less emphasis on "stuff". Those societies are generally derided by Americans who, if I may generalize for a second, tend to think their way of life is the only correct way of life.

    Same here in Canada. Artificially high pricing, through taxes, huge graphic warning labels taking up most of the package and they have to be kept out of sight.
