  1. Traditionally a no-fly zone includes keeping missiles from the sky...artillery obviously a different subject.
  2. Interesting way of conceding that it would indeed be naïve to believe you could institute a no-fly zone without escalating the war.
  3. Current Keystone isn't running at capacity. So for now it is hard to believe it would make an impact.
  4. Yes, wars can indeed change the landscape. Nice of you to gloat.
  5. And Ukraine likely needs planes in the next 24 to 48 hours to really make a difference.
  6. He followed it up this weekend by suggesting the US commit a war crime by sending in US planes with Chinese markings, bomb Russian targets in Ukraine and then sit back and watch Russia and China fight each other. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/mar/07/donald-trump-russia-ukraine-jets-chinese
  7. And now Russian police stopping people on the streets and demanding to see the content on their phone. https://www.businessinsider.com/russian-police-are-demanding-to-read-peoples-text-messages-reporter-2022-3
  8. Which believe it or not for quite some time was more than Ukraine paid its soldiers. MY assistant is Ukrainian and her parents and one brother live in Crimea, with the rest of her family around Ukraine. When Russia annexed Crimea her brother (who was in the Ukrainian forces) was given the option to move to Ukraine or join the Russian army in Crimea. They paid better, so he stayed in Crimea. Her family now has family members fighting on both sides of the conflict, while the entire family is solidly anti-Putin. All that to say that never mind the low pay, I think a large part of the Russian forces are simply not motivated or willing to die, specially not in Ukraine.
  9. You think they are going to pay their troops and suppliers in US dollars, cause the Ruble is worthless and they are unable to prop it up due to sanctions on their national bank.
  10. Because it won't be a no-fly zone. It will be a good second choice though. You know how it isn't a no-fly zone? Cause even Zelenskyy said it and he is on the ground in Ukraine trying to fight for his country and its population. He said, if you cannot institute a no-fly zone, then at least get me planes. https://www.axios.com/zelensky-ukraine-no-fly-zone-planes-7eb2e6f8-d488-4444-bc70-889141b34dcf.html
  11. What is the official definition of a no-fly zone and has Putin agreed to this official definition?
  12. Sure. But remember the argument was instituting something that wouldn't draw NATO into the conflict. Only have European countries involved and not have the US actively involved. That was Joe's 9and maybe yours too?) argument. So by now that means any non-NATO European nation implementing a no-fly zone, having Russia see that as a declaration of war and not having it escalate to a full blown NATO/US involvement. My argument consistently has been that this is not possible and any scenario you can dream of that might fit into that box is naïve. Can't say I have seen a suggestion that would work and not significantly escalate the conflict. (though I am really not opposed to escalating the conflict. I believe we are already in WW3 and we might as well escalate earlier and defeat him now)
  13. yeah except Putin already said any no-fly zone would be seen as a declaration of war. Like I said, thinking differently is pretty naïve. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/putin-russia-ukraine-fly-zone-war-b2029328.html
  14. Esper was partly fired for focusing on Russia too much. Trump's nominee for Ambassador to Germany supports Putin's invasion of Ukraine and advocated for the US to leave NATO. (he also advocated for a military coup in France...and hinted at one in the US) Bolton has stated Trump was going to withdraw the US from NATO. One has to wonder why and how Trump got so focused on Ukraine and how they were "hiding" Clinton's server......
  15. I assumed she was on her way out of the country. But no, she was arrested on her way into the country. I mean, you travel to Russia now, you are taking your chances.
  16. Russia has already said that today. They said any nation involved with maintaining any no-fly zone would be seen as an active participant in the war. Which is what I said from the beginning, any no-fly zone will draw NATO into the conflict completely. Any other ideas are naïve.
  17. How does a 100 mile no-fly zone help protect a route into Kyiv? It is 467 miles from the Polish border to Kyiv.
  18. Some levity in dark times. https://twitter.com/Charles_Lister/status/1499860268490362887?s=20&t=wkOJZLBYXl2QKgx7-63wNA
  19. Supposedly it was Chrystia Freeland's idea to put sanctions on the Russian Central Bank. I think that is going to be a potential deciding factor in all of this. It has caused Russia to lose access to about 60% of its Foreign FX reserves and has seriously handicapped and devalued the remaining 40%. With the rouble in freefall, Russia is going to run out of money, or at least value in money.
  20. Not sure why you are leaving out the entirety of Europe (outside of Ukraine) in these possible retaliations.
  21. Laughable, utterly totally laughable.
  22. Sure, but that assumes Russia will not escalate. Russia has now shut down Twitter and Facebook within its borders. It has enacted emergency legislation that has effectively shut down international journalists within Russia. Putin is shutting down access to information and is going to try and manage all the messaging. Ultimately, in today's world I don't think he will be successful in that. If you can no longer control the message, you have to change the message to something all consuming. For Putin that will be "NATO is attacking us" and how the West has always been out to destroy Russia. This is why any implementation of a no-fly zone by any western country or alliance will quickly escalate. Also why pinky swearing you won't call on NATO really is a little naïve.
  23. Just copying this, cause I know you will complain about people not being nice enough to you in the future. To the rest of your post, it seems overly simplistic. You cannot establish a no-fly zone without the willingness to engage ground targets and the willingness to put troops on the ground. Secondly, there is no way a European Country or a coalition of European Countries or NATO could announce they are enforcing a no-fly zone without Russia using that as an indication of a declaration of war. certainly not at this point.
  24. Because Putin will want to avoid this at all costs. Becoming dependent on one country is the exact antithesis of Putin's goal. Also, I don't think China and Russia's goals are aligned.
  25. Airplanes in the sky is the same as boots on the ground and would actively bring NATO into the conflict. Can you explain to me how you see a European response as separate from a NATO response?
