On the drive home I decided I wasn't going to let this one go. I have a question. What would you say if a bunch of people said they wanted to invade Iraq and transform the military so that we could better extend the US's influence throughout the world. Then those very same people get elected and appointed to the highest public offices in the country but the only thing holding them back is a lack of public support for their lofty goals. Then along comes a galvanizing event that gives that leadership unprecedented public support and a rallying sense of nationalism. Do you think it's possible that those leaders might use that event to their advantage? Is that crazy, America bashing thought? Or is that a logical assumption? I agree. Since everyone knows that the amendment doesn't have the votes to pass this is an exercise in futility, unless you're trying to get your base to the polls this fall. And I agree with your partnering agreement concept but in this climate it's going to be harder to get "marriage" off of your tax forms than it would be to get "under God" back out of the Pledge.
