  1. Which only indicates the injustice of racial profiling, and nothing more.
  2. If it was an adult he was talking to, what was the crime? I'm not saying what the accused did is okay. I just don't believe it justifies what is essentially entrapment. Freedom trumps safety. "They that would give up essential liberties in order to gain some temporary safety desrve neither liberty nor safety." --Benjamin Franklin
  3. If it was a police officer above the age of consent, it was not a minor. A crime was created, not committed.
  4. I agree. That still does not justify suspending civil rights.
  5. Sorry, I got away from my original point. If police are not allowed to impersonate minors for underage liquor store sales, why should they be able to impersonate a minor in this situation? While I find the alleged crime apalling, like others, I do not feel that the rights of the accused should be infringed so that others can feel safer. If parents feel internet access is so dangerous to their children, it is the parents' responsibility to supervise their kids while they are online, IMO. The internet is a great tool for research and entertainment, but a lousy babysitter.
  6. I don't know about Prof. Kallend's university, but at the school I have been attending, there is a fairly even split among the students (that attempt to be informed), as well as the faculty. I've heard as much conservatism leak into the classroom as I've heard liberalism.
  7. That is what happened with the clerk I mentioned. He proceeded to make a citizen's arrest of the minor, for misrepresentation of age with intent to purchase alcohol. The clerk was legally justified in this action, based on local law. It turned into a catch 22 for the police, and the charges against both parties were dismissed.
  8. I would like to hear more about this idea. I do not think current AA policies are perfect, by any means. But they do enable slow progress towards a necessary and just end. However, if a more just method is made available, I would definitely consider it with an open mind.
  9. I am interested in knowing if police officers( in the applicable area of jurisdiction) over age 21 can "pose" as minors for a sting to catch those that would sell alcohol to minors. When my job required selling alcohol, this type of sting would have been (and was for one clerk) very easy to beat, based exclusively on the actions of the police.
  10. You're correct. That was the question. What I was curious about was how the majority (as of this posting) would vote for him. However, of those that would not, the majority voted he "would be a waste of ballot space." That seems odd to me, especially when considering that one of the more conservative SC posters suggested (too late, unfortunately) a *Yes, in spite of disagreeing with his political opinions* option. It just seems an odd way for the opinions to break down, IMO.
  11. I clarified later in the thread: >Its's more about the lack of opportunities of their grandparents and parents. We often take for granted the effects of our parents (and in turn, their parents) education and success. If they were not successful, it will be more difficult for their children to be successful. Simply saying everybody has the same opportunities does not make it so. We have taken great strides in this country to end inequality among the different ethnic groups in this country, with respect to opportunity. We are not, however, through. We still have a long way to go; we are not there yet. --------- I've been around way too many minorities to believe that they don't work as hard toward success. Unfortunately, when you are already behind before you ever get started, success is far more difficult, though, as you point out, not impossible.
  12. East of Eden by John Steinbeck It's the first bit of fiction I've read in quite awhile, and is quite good.
  13. Why would that make you hate France? There's assholes in lots of countries, including US. It has nothing to do with France.
  14. Interesting. How does that break down by acre?
  15. I like BH's low tech, highly effective locking mechanism.
  16. Please refrain from posting until you know what the hell you are talking about. But GravityGirl, aren't other rigs automatically better because they're more expensive? [shakes head] I personally believe the Icon is a fine rig, and know many happy customers.
  17. The most expensive rig is not necessarily the best. Nor is the least expensive the worst. I don't know how many brand new rigs you have seen side by side for comparison, but the best build quality is not found on the most expensive container, even though its quality will be high also. It is very difficult to buy a poor quality rig these days.
  18. Try http://yousendit.com, if it is not a file that is illegal to distribute, and it is less than 1GB. It is free, and I have had success withit in the past.
  19. Did I miss this in the skydiving media, or was it not reported as effectively as the initial reports? (I have no reason to doubt you; your take on the events is consistent with what little info I was able to find about this incident so long after the fact.) At any rate, it appears that I stand corrected, and hope you will accept my apologies.
  20. I think this is only the pre-second time that I am in complete agreement with you. I think I need to check for a fever.
  21. [devil's advocate]If I remember my philosophy correctly, Plato and Aristotle both felt that the corruption was inevitable in a democracy, and was in fact one of the defining characteristics.[/devil's advocate]
