I may be wrong but I think this is the first post in this thread to mention that aspect... as per the PD article on intelligent downsizing, Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

I may be a bit anal, but I've never got out the habit of getting my gear looked over by someone else before every jump. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Using marketing material ? Alternatively, in the litigious US, trying to avoid themselves getting sued? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

And for those without Mike G and his pressure chamber around, another option is to ask an experienced jumper to wear it as well as his regular one on a jump to check it fwiw... even though my alti was bought new, i was advised to get this done before i jumped it (admittedly i had only just gone solo at the time). yeah well, i hope you continue to fly and land safely. i've seen too many sentences like these get posted as an "i told you so" when it ends up in the incidents column. i really hope it doesn't happen to you. i'd be interested to know btw what your jump #s are. fwiw i also got told by a highly experienced instructor that because i'm so light, conservative yada yada i could downsize straight from a 190 to a 150. i read the incidents column, a lot of the other posts here, chatted to one or two other instructors and decided not to skip the 170 step inbetween. i guess people also hear what they want to sometimes. everyone makes mistakes, even intelligent good pilots sometimes it's better to make them under a larger canopy. jmho. Never mind ratings or how many years since you jumped or anything else - the above quote tells me you're still a skydiver

you got the point i was trying to raise! (... i certainly was not trying to imply that tandems are not more complex.) Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

The Seasoning of Gato (aka Quickdraw)

my first freefall is still one of my favourite jump memories. good luck with the rest of your student progression! Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun. -
I've seen a few times, in this forum, a post that will say something like "Remember - a tandem (or whatever) is not just another skydive". Now, I know I have low jump numbers, but what is "just another skydive"? Is it one you have done 50 or 100 or 1000 times before? Is it the one you have become complacent about? Is it the one where maybe you didn't get your gear checked, or rushed the dirt-dive, or assumed the newbie would know what to do if he couldn't get to the formation, or the one you didn't check latest wind for, because it's the same again as you've done so many times before? How many reports in the incidents forum came after "just another skydive"? Is there really such a thing as "just another skydive"? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Jo - re the DNA, from what I understand they will need more of the DNA to prove an exact match to someone - but I guess only a certain amount of DNA will be enough to see if it is NOT a match. Some info here http://www.ornl.gov/sci/techresources/Human_Genome/elsi/forensics.shtml I'm very sorry that all your efforts appear to have led to this dead end, but hope it gives you some kind of closure. hmmm.interesting. if we are going by sketches, there is certainly a resemblance (especially the ears - distinctive)... and this is someone who used to be a paratrooper so he can indeed be placed in a parachute. And, I presume, someone trained as a paratrooper would have a better chance surviving treacherous landing conditions than a sport jumper? One thing that appears similar in this story to Jo's is the complete lack of interest by the FBI... Jo, a question. You say Are you implying that you have photos of Duane that resemble the composite but have not made them public? If so what is the reason for this, given that it could surely only strengthen your case? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Skydivers are fair weather friends

just on this 27 miles issue... when i broke my ankles, not life threatening, i was splinted up by a jumper paramedic, and they coulda called an ambulance, but people had had crappy experiences at the hospital it would've taken me to (the closest one to the DZ) and it was quite far from home (it was clear i needed surgery and would stay in hospital a few days). so 2 jumpers, who at that point i really didn't know very well, despite it being around 11am on a beautiful day, took the time for one to drive me in my car to the hospital near my home (so my car wasn't stranded at the DZ) and the other to drive behind so first jumper could get back to DZ! Funnily enough, that trip is about 40km one way, or just about 27 miles. Again, my experience very different. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun. -
Jeez, with all these heavy hints about "national security" and we must wonder why the files are not being made public etc, i'm starting to think maybe George W Bush is DB Cooper... Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

I think we'll be very pleased when we stop getting "hints", "clues", "i know something but can't reveal it now" etc from posters here and get something concrete. The "new suspect" seems to be known to at least 3 people here (you, Jo and jack wilson), so why - if everyone is looking for the real cooper - hasn't anyone mentioned the name to see if there is any evidence/help available from those jumpers still following this thread? I did my FJC not all that long ago and there is a limit to how much people can absorb, especially people like me who had never been exposed to any kind of aviation/wind reliant etc sport. So, I actually can't tell you if we were taught the different types of turns but I definitely remember being taught no more than 90 deg on final (no more than 180 below 1000') I really just wanted to post a simple reminder, that low turns can and have killed people even under student canopies, and that even more experienced jumpers have been hurt not trying to avoid obstacles but trying to turn into the wind. Our priorities of landing were drilled into us (land with a flat wing in a clear area; flare for landing; preferably land into wind). Emphasis on this should help people figure out if a low turn is worth the risk or not? Just my 2c, A licence, low# jumper etc opinion. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Skydivers are fair weather friends
Orange1 replied to shadowon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Jeez... when i broke my ankles after just 60 jumps, not enough time to really have made "real friends" with other jumpers, i discovered skydivers were among the best friends out there. Also know skydivers who definitely still socially see ex-jumpers! My exprience is limited, but I definitely hope yours is in the minority. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun. -
Yeah. Maybe also something to consider is that especially with young kids, being at the DZ all weekend, every weekend - even if they do have fun there - is maybe not the best thing for the kids either. Kids need to do some normal kid stuff on the weekends too. Again, it's all about balance, for them as well as you. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Skydiving in different countries?
Orange1 replied to Blassiter's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
you have to ASK? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun. -
I'd say "well done" to the low timer for having the guts to say no to a jump that "everyone else" is happy with. 5 minutes as a margin of safety? what if they'd had to do a go-around for some reason? there have been times i haven't jumped when the more experienced guys have, but (so far) have never been made to feel like i was a wuss - maybe dz-specific - but it is something i am grateful for. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
-
yeah, it's all about balance. i can't spend all weekend every weekend at the DZ and that means i don't get as many jumps in as i might otherwise, but it also means i get to keep my family intact. our basic 'deal' is one day a weekend jumping, one day family. (if we have bad weather for a few consecutive weeks then i occasionally will do both days at the DZ.) bringing the family to the DZ may work for some people, but some DZs just have less attraction for a spouse and child to hang out all day, especially if there are a bunch of other fun options for them in town. Note the very first post by Mrs. Weber which clearly states the intent of this thread. She is seeking the assistance of the industry to acquire that information. ...yes, that was the point of an earlier post i made, not long ago, quoting her first post wrt that point and asking that question. that post was ignored. so bottom line is over 420 posts of other stuff and despite all the 'help' that crucial piece of evidence is still missing. and i can't help noticing how someone who joins dz.com and only makes a couple of posts in this forum gets slammed IF they are 'anti' the duane theory but someone like scotty11 who does the same thing but 'pro' duane doesn't get the same treatment... Having everything else "in order" is pretty useless without these 2 things. I will be much more inclined to take her version of it when we have proof that Weber had skydiving experience - we haven't seen proof of even a single jump yet. She's been posting here close to a year and we still have not been presented with anything at all that puts Weber in a parachute. Unless, again, it was someone else in a parachute and Weber was the "man on the ground"...(but then of course he is not actually DB Cooper, "just" his helper). I'm inclined to think there is another poster here to whom the truth is just as important as it is to Jo, and that person clearly does not think it was Weber - but far from being a "nuisance" to Jo I believe that person is really looking for the truth, just unwilling to explain why (and so has less sympathy from everyone else?).
