Jo, I don't recall you having posted this before? Forgive me if I have forgotten if you did, but if you hadn't... why wait till now, and why theorize about possible prison programs etc before posting this? Surely this comment would have been important enough to put in your very first post rather than waiting so very long? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Psychological Well-being and Extreme Sports?

with respect... survey requests like this get posted here fairly regularly, so not sure how 'original' it is... i'm presuming from what you say though that very few of them end up as published research. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun. -
War was declaired in 1939. The USA just joined late. By mid 1941 it was obvious the USA would join in, and by that time it was obvious what side. Although earlier in the war it looked like the USA could go either way. Cabbage regardless of the dates war was declared, bozo seems to make a convincing argument that he would not have had time to do airborne, combined with redlegphi's comments makes it unlikely. anyway from what i understand of paratroopers someone with bad conduct is not going to get a shot at that? Most, but not all. I have had a number of jumps with line twists, and all but one came out pretty easily. The one that didn't - even though the canopy was flying straight - finally came out at 1500' (I had pulled at 3K). I was altitude aware and this was my last try before chopping. Incidentally the lines had been so spun up that i was disoriented for a good few seconds after they untwisted (which they did fast, when they finally did). Before this jump, I would probably have agreed with untwisting rather than chopping - now, I know how much altitide you can burn up trying to fix twists even on a canopy flying straight. Nick, why do we have to assume an "either/or" here? Is it not possible he was one of 2 or 3 AND had done some sport training as well? ...maybe just enough to figure out he knew how to pull a ripcord? (Also, is it not incorrect to assume that any military jumper would have been restricted to SL?) I'm still assuming that we had someone who was not afraid to land in trees with a load, which to my mind does support the idea of basic military or smoke training. Supplement that with some sports training - perhaps conveniently forgetting to mention that you have prior military/smoke experience - disappear after 10 or 20 jumps or whatever it took to get to freefall at a decent altitude in those days like i'm sure many did (and still do) - and no-one will necessarily think of you after the fact...? This could also explain why he didn't have his own rig. (Newbie buys rig, newbie disappears with rig after skyjack = not such a good idea?) Just to go over what we know - suspects that have variously been dismissed - mayfield, mccoy, and christiansen - had jumping experience of various sorts. (Christiansen would be my personal favourite except ckret says he doesn't match the physical description) Who of the other "serious" suspects had (proven) jumping experience? Is it safe to say that in that time - anyone who was known to have jumping experience and 'disappeared' after the hijacking would have been brought to light, as would anyone with that background who seemed to suddenly have more money than before? This, to me, is still the most puzzling aspect of the whole case. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Jo, forgive me for asking this again as I may have missed some bits of this long thread, but has there yet been any evidence that Duane had ever skydived? Ckret - I can understand DNA requests are at the back of the line, but someone else has pointed out the folly of physical descriptions - though I take your point about his area of work. Could the paper sack have been for something like goggles/alti or other accessories for a jump? (i can't recall reading he asked for anything like that, only the parachutes?) leaving the tie in an era before DNA, if you had wiped the tie-pin of fingerprints, may not have been the error you assume? Ckret, you stated at some time that christiansen was not the man - has there been a DNA check done on that too or was the rejection of him as suspect based on other factors? he still has one huge advantage as a suspect over weber imho - he knew how to jump out a plane (and how to do it with a heavy load in bad conditions). "This individual", I believe, is someone who just wants to know who DB Cooper is...and I wouldn't be surprised if he has already come into contact with the FBI but not as a suspect. All speculation on my part of course but I have my reasons for thinking so Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
-
well... some of them are copies of memos etc with the original dates on and have been being added to the files ever since Norjak took place... so are you implying that reliability etc have been a problem at the FBI for the past three and half decades? what about all the other cases they have managed to solve? i've only skimmed the DBCooper ones so far...will make up my mind when i have had time to look at all of it as it is a LOT of stuff... but have also had a lot of fun looking at all the other stuff there under FOIA some of it is really interesting stuff! well, the 'tip' was to include FBI in the search term, yes it is easy to find but to my knowledge the link has not yet been posted in this thread... and i thought it might be of interest. not everyone goes onto google themselves. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Thanks to a "tip"

The "paper" is made from cotton...not wood pulp which is what you will be thinking of as "paper"... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotton_paper Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

From the US Treasury website: So, sounds like last change in composition was long before DB Cooper. The fact that they are made from linen/cotton rather than paper is why you can still use your money after it accidentally stays in your pocket through a washing machine. Not sure how that compares to years of being in water though. Edited to add: there are some pics of what happens to buried or water damaged currency here! : http://www.moneyfactory.gov/section.cfm/8/39 Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

He didn't get away with it if he served time! And he did get prosecuted for the student deaths - as per something i posted some months ago: I don't know much other about Mayfield than what I've read here and what was thrown up by a couple of internet searches, but he seems to have a history of being caught & punished rather than getting away with things, and that alone would make me think Cooper was someone else. ... i just wish someone would finally come up with something conclusive about WHO!! btw - Ckret - re the discussion about the DNA on the tie - can you confirm or not if there was more than one person's DNA on the tie and if so, if all the DNA found was tested vs Duane? I am guessing that it would have been very difficult to wear a tie and not get any DNA on it at all, especially in an era when you think fingerprints are the only ID mechanism? clicky: http://www.oregonlive.com/news/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/news/119588193341980.xml&coll=7&thispage=1 Are you saying you are Carr? One thing i have difficulty understanding is why the fact that Cooper only had one or two drinks is repeatedly used as "evidence" that he wasn't a heavy drinker. Surely anyone attempting a risky jump like that would not want to do it under the influence... Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

;) interesting rig. luckily when i did SL we had rings on the rig but not allowed any on our fingers (like your student ) fwiw i have jumped 206 and 207 with cargo doors. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

As a matter of interest... how is this different from the velcro strap on your alti (or isn't it?) I have sometimes looked at that and wondered what would happen if it did get snagged... though (just thinking out loud) I guess it's easier to get "rid" of the alti, if you can reach it. I was taught to PLF with feet (and knees) tightly together... and I'm sure I'm not the only jumper who has PLF'd landings because at the time I only had "one good leg"... Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Fibula, femur, or fatality (105 elliptical 1.3 PSF 127 jumps)

And that's what you call positive attitude. heh? I was told the 3 golden tool of dealing with kids: threatening, blackmailing, bribing..... I see your favorite. .......about you take the attitude in account? Cool guys(heads) vs. hot shots? Sadly, even skydivers with cool heads have ended up in the incidents forum with "fatality" in the subject line. unrelated, happily i don't have to "deal" with my kid in any of the 3 "golden tools" you state. She's only 6, but she can listen to reason. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun. -

I don't think that its fair to be ground by wind limits, just because your exit weight/WL. We had one case of an exceptionally light girl (probably 100 lbs) allowed to jump a 135 fairly early in, but it was an oldish canopy and so a pure square. The rest of us lighter "chicks" have been well versed in the "pure WL" vs "size of canopy" argument and AFAIK not a single one has jumped a 120 under a good few hundred jumps. Sure it sucks to sit out occasionally when you'll go backwards and others can jump, but I can tell you it sucks a lot more being in ER with broken bones on a sunny Saturday morning. Hmm...me, Saturday, long spot, nothing clear between me and the DZ... i could see i could make it back but that i wouldn't have enough altitude to fly a pattern. took a downwind landing with the wind speed somewhere around low teens. it wasn't pretty, but i never doubted that i could do it - it did make me wonder though how many low turns to get into wind happen not because of pattern fixation but because people get scared at how fast their canopies are going and don't trust themselves to land them at that speed? i admit to briefly thinking, while the ground came rushing towards me faster than i have ever seen it, "would be nice to be on a bigger canopy right now " my personal comfort level on a canopy has to be: "can i land this downwind in the maximum winds in which i am prepared to jump?" Gato, this http://www.performancedesigns.com/docs/choosing1.pdf is an article written by Scott Miller (he who many people suggest taking canopy control courses from) available on the PD website. A lot of the concepts are explained in there, including why different sizes of the same canopy at the same wingloading fly differently. Hope you find it useful.
