Political satire, a comparison of UK and US TV shows
Stumpy replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
Well that escalated quickly. Interestingly, the only person expressing any hate here is you. Everyone else was having an interesting discussion about the differences in satire between the two countries. To the OP - I haven't seen the series commented upon in the article (no TV here!), but Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister were genius. A lot of posters here should watch some of them before they comment - the polling episode springs to mind. Wasn't it "Yes, twice in 1944, but it was dark,... and I didn't land." Never try to eat more than you can lift

They do pick the best pictures don't they. Funny listening to him dodge questions. He doesn't have the practised sleight of phrase that the more practiced have on both sides of the aisle. Never try to eat more than you can lift

OK thanks - yep am familiar with the Whips - same thing in UK politics. Never try to eat more than you can lift

Can someone explain to this furriner the distinction between the seniority of the two? If Cantor is (was) the leader of the majority and Boehner is the speaker, who takes precedence in a GOP decision? Never try to eat more than you can lift

So yes - people are going to the wrong place. That sounds like an education issue so the patients know where to go. However, it's good that you are finally conceding that Obamacare is working, as previously uninsured patients can now get the care that they need. Never try to eat more than you can lift

Sweet - now they only need to scale it up to people sized objects, and the distance to 12000 miles and I can pop back to the UK for the weekend to visit my parents! Never try to eat more than you can lift

What do you think costs more. The death penalty, or life imprisonment? As it is or as it should be? As it is. "As it should be" is a nonsense argument and I suspect you know it. Never try to eat more than you can lift

Racism: Democrats are just as racist as any other party

Fortunately for them, there are plenty on the right happy to oblige them. When the right stops with the discriminatory politics, stops paying lip service to equality, and starts having debates of real substance then I might give your argument some level of credit. So what? You are quoting numbers without context. Do you know what difference 0.0001% extra will make? Or 0.000001%? or 1%? FIFY. Others being worse is not an excuse for inaction. Never try to eat more than you can lift

No, I haven't. Do you recommend it? I do. It is both excellent and terrifying. And funny? The imdb entry makes it sound like there ought to be some comedic relief in there too. Never try to eat more than you can lift

Here in the USA it can vary from state to state. I live in Oregon and almost all of the work I have done on my current house has been done with a Building Permit that is req'd ( I have enlarged my current house from 1200 sq ft to over 2100 sq ft ). Also here, when you sell a house you must state in writing that all work has been completed via a Building Permit, or other wordage to that effect ( the exact wordage I am not current with ). As my brother once said, 'A Building Permit is not to protect the home owner, it is to protect the next home owner.' JerryBaumchen PS) If you ever want to hear some scary stories, just spend some time with a building inspector; they've seen it all. yep - agreed Jerry. Now as for what that had to do with the original post I am not quite sure - Turtle?? Never try to eat more than you can lift

The difference is that your job has a potential for progression. Work hard and minimum wage will soon be a distant memory. The Maccas worker - not so much. Can you . . . rather, are you allowed to do your own home repair or addition? huh? What you talking about willis? I was talking to an Australian, and maybe I was being fed a load of crap, but, as I understood what she was articulating to me: 1) No maintenance or modification is allowed unless you hire a contractor. 2) Simple things like changing light bulbs you can do, but that's about it. 3) Inspections are done to see that the rules are followed 4) All homes are essentially owned by the state. Hmmm - sounds unlikely but i can't say for sure - not sure about the Aussie market. From a quick Google it appears there are state owned homes like in the UK, but its only 304,000 out of 7.1 million. Here - you need consent to do major alterations, and if you do any serious plumbing/electrical you need someone to sign it off (The sign off and code of compliance stuff only really becomes a problem when you want to sell) - but I do loads of stuff on my own house, and the state certainly doesn't own it. And that would be fine, if those arguing the "Repeal and Replace" mantra had actually thought for even a second about the "replace" part. As of yet, no-one has come up with anything remotely credible and until they do, it's pretty clear what the real agenda is. Never try to eat more than you can lift
