RMK mentioned unlike in the UK, to come out as an Atheist in the US can potential cause you great grief with family members, and or be a death nail to a career. This is quite true, maybe not so much for your career, but family can find it just as shocking as saying you shagged a Goat. Not realy sure how often shagging a goat occurs in the UK or the US. A former atheist attending our church, born and raised as an atheist much like I was born and raised in a christian home, she is very much in that place as RMK mentioned in his reply. At work, around new friends she is excepted, but with her family members she is keeping her new life in secret so that her relationship with her mother who is not just Mom but Best Friend is not damaged.

Do they even teach geography in US schools anymore? The US does have a high number of religious zealots, but certainly has a higher number of non-religious than thought. Unlike Europe, in the US you can easily be ostracised by friends, family and even damage your career if you are openly athiest or agnostic - better to just say "yeah I'm Protestant" and not incur the hassle Zealots: interesting use of a word...well I guess that wasn't directed at me, as I'm no Jew. But I do love my Jewish friends very much.

NORTH EAST STATES, damn I even gave a direction, but didn't feel It necessary to name them, I did however name two on the WEST COAST. Hope that helps ya.

It's appalling that you light-thinking people bash all the good people out here simply because they have a religious belief. Your opinions on the reality of the benefits of religious belief is small-minded to say the least. Believe or not as is your choice. You are making asses out of yourselves by bashing the good people out here AND the driving force of their goodness AND the good works they do. No, don't back track now....you say believers are idiots, in so many words, yet it's just those "idiots" who would be sorely missed should they decide to stop doing those good works. Ask yourself...What is really driving me to bash others for their religious beliefs? How many of you do it because you don't have a religious belief so, in order to make yourselves feel better and more sophisticated than others, you feel the need to bring others down to a status lower than yours? Nutters are nutters. Yep, some nutters do things trying to hide behind the screen of "religion". It's pretty small-minded to assume that it's the religion and not the individual. Watch out now, with that kind of support you might find yourself in the same camp and shower with those damn christians with a bus backup to it How many non-religious groups i.e. organizations that put boots on the ground, millions of dollars of their organizations charitable giving to fund, assist, rebuild, care for, among other things in Hattie after the earth quake? I'm just asking the question is there a significant atheist group, humanist group, Satanist group that is funneling their assists, time and energy in a major financial manner? Maybe WeareAtheism which donated 25K to Boston Marathon Tragedy, OK awesome, but that amount was not even a drop compaired to what the church poured into the area. What organization does at least as much as say Samaritan's Purse, Salvation Army, Ten Thousand Homes to only name three?

This is true, the christain church is very much in decline in the North East states, Oregan, Washington State to name a few. But its also very much on the increase in the south. Lakewood church in Houston has roughly 20,000 plus in attendance every Sunday morning, Sagemont Church in Houston has 2 services with about 10,000 plus in attendance in total and 2 awaken services that are for the youth with about 1,800 in total every sunday morning. Then there is City Mark church that started less than a year ago with only 140 attending and now has roughly 660 every sunday. Marseille France, has a Underground church located there which started over a year ago with just 3 people. It now has over 40 meeting every sunday. 3 of them were Muslims and 3 others are Pro Soccer players. I use the term underground because they meet in a home. I know this is bad news to ya. But we hope to be around for many years to come. My concern is we might be the next group sent to re-education camps for a shower. After all there are those that think a world without religion, replaced with humanism would be much better. OH, just want to give a shout out to the NSA that is recording all our statements, HAVE A NICE DAY

Wendy, my sister made it to Vice President of a Marine Division with a large insurance company. She pulls down more than300k with only a High School education. But she worked her way up from a clerk and received all required licenses and was promoted within.

I found the video to be quite interesting. I posted in another thread that my wife and I's income is somewhere in the top 5%. After seeing this video, maybe not. I did receive a 14% pay raise two months back, never would have had that kind of raise when working at NASA. I have a friend in the financial industry who lives in Baton Rouge. His income is somewhere around 360K per month. Been in the business for more than 25 years and receives trails on investments he has under management. Would love to have his drive and passion for what he does.

Oh, I forgot this is Speaker's Corner. I'll stay away from facts and reason. OK, I was intrigued with your post. I had to look up your field of study, "Cognitive Neuroscience" if I’m correct. OK, big words with lots of other big words associated within its definition. I would think with such education you would be paid at least 6 figures, funny how that works out. Tinkering with the brain

Rather hard to become a licensed physician without a degree. Or a licensed structural engineer. This article just appeared on the Drude Report. Just a little quote from the article or maybe it's a book review "Is College Worth It?" “Is College Worth It?” provides a thoroughgoing deconstruction of the “of course it is” delusion. It turns out that for too many, and maybe even most of our young people, the answer to this central question is, sadly, “no.” “Whether the standard of excellence for higher education is cultivating the mind and the soul or maximizing financial return on investment, most of higher education fails most students,” the authors write. College has simply become too expensive. In the time between when I graduated from college and when my kids will start in a couple of years, the price differential, adjusting for inflation, has jumped 300 percent. When I went to college, my parents just wanted me to follow my muse, develop my mind and be happy. This led to my getting a doctorate — and to everyone’s surprise, I somehow figured out how to make a good living. However, a bachelor of arts degree in political science at a price of more than $150,000 now seems like a bad life choice. Somewhere during the past 25 years, the idea of following your muse in college got killed. What killed it is explained by the “Bennett Hypothesis,” which by now should be elevated to the status of a theory or a law: “College tuition will rise as long as the amount of money available through federal student aid continues to increase with little or no accountability.” Awash in taxpayer-subsidized money, colleges offer their discerning-lifestyle consumers every possible amenity: wired dorms, state-of-the-art workout facilities, beautiful grounds and Zagat-worthy dining. Teachers teach less and research more. The person who is probably teaching your kid is not a tenured rock star, but a galley slave grad student who is paid so little that he or she qualifies for welfare assistance. It also bankrolls an ever-growing middle management of deans and directors. And let’s not forget the high six- and seven-figure salaries of college presidents. We have created a subprime higher-education bubble, and Mr. Bennett and Mr. Wilezol aim to let some of the air of out it. Well I hope they focus on their career and not the 200K debt that came with it.

Who in their right mind would spend 200K to get a Photography degree? Are there actual individuals that are doing this? If I'm spending 200K on an education...I would have already determined my career path to ensure I'm going to make a damn good living, and the payoff will far out weigh the cost of my student loan. Maybe someone needs to intervene in these peoples lives and help them come to reality that maybe being a photographer who has to live with mommy and daddy is not the best investment of time and money. Next somebody is going to post about a degree program in Home ed.

"...Like the housing crisis that preceded it, this crisis is intimately connected to America’s soaring inequality, and how, as Americans on the bottom rungs of the ladder strive to climb up, they are inevitably pulled down — some to a point even lower than where they began." Well I probably have no business getting involved in this discussion. I have no degree, never completed college, primarily was too busy making a living and the cost even back in the early 80's was to costly at the time for me. The statement above in the article concerning inequality, bottom rungs of the ladder, inevitably pulled down, to me is a bunch of Bullshit. Was I equal to my peers, hell no, was I at the bottom of the ladder, damn near, but I never was inevitably pulled down by lack of money or social status. Is a college degree over rated? Sometimes I think so, but for me I wish I had struggled through it because I feel I missed out on a very great experience in my life. I am however very lucky in that my wife and I have done very well financially and are more than likely in the top 5% of income earners. I work with several engineers that have student loans that exceed 100K, that is a heavy burden to bare when you saddle that dept with a mortgage, marriage, children, retirement.... There are High Schools in my area that exceed 500 million in construction cost after you add in the Stadium, tracks, tennis courts, baseball fields...maybe just maybe the rising cost of education has nothing to do with education itself, but the lavish buildings and mega-million dollar stadiums we deem to be so important.

The guy who kidnaps, imprisons and rapes three girls for over 10 years, not to mention the beatings they took from time to time and on several occasions causing the death of more than 1 unborn child gets bail set at $8,000,000.00 dollars. Two parent’s whipping a child for several minutes gets jailed with no bail? I find that odd?

"Barack the Magic Negro" was first applied to presidential candidate Obama by the Movie and Culture critic David Ehrenstein in a Los Angeles Times op ed column on March 19, 2007. From the article: "But it's clear that Obama also is running for an equally important unelected office, in the province of the popular imagination — the "Magic Negro." The Magic Negro is a figure of postmodern folk culture, coined by snarky 20th century sociologists, to explain a cultural figure who emerged in the wake of Brown vs. Board of Education. "He has no past, he simply appears one day to help the white protagonist," reads the description on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magical_Negro . He's there to assuage white "guilt" (i.e., the minimal discomfort they feel) over the role of slavery and racial segregation in American history, while replacing stereotypes of a dangerous, highly sexualized black man with a benign figure for whom interracial sexual congress holds no interest."

Tim Tebow came out several years ago for being Christian. He showed great courage in doing so...maybe the President will give him a call to congratulate him and throw his support behind him. After all Obama is a Christain too.

PD Forcing Residents From Home During Boston Manhunt
Channman replied to Kennedy's topic in Speakers Corner
I'm thinking of the Gun confiscations that occurred during Katrina. Such as the Father and son on their boat trying to save their belonging. State Police pull up along side of them with AR 15 raised and asked them if they had any weapons on board. They said yes, we are trying to sav...... and with that had weapons drawn on them and told to raise their hands and move to the back of the boat. Their guns where taken from them and they refused to leave any paper work stating they were taken. Took months, and attorney fees to have the guns returns. -
QuoteNo doubt, our media is in a total shambles (a whole other discussion on that topic I could go on for days

Well Ian, it's good to know you don't have the same values as those reporting the news from MSNBC. Just an observation of a segment of people with a political point of view were willing and hoping for a completely different out come. Damn those Islamist for screwing up the narrative.

QuoteNPR just had the Mass Governor's statement live. 1 suspect dead, one at large. Both are the suspects who's pics were released. They are brothers, 19 and 20. Both Chechen nationals in the US legally. The naked guy is a "suspected accomplice" who is in custody but not yet named. 1 cop dead. The suspect is not inside of any perimeter, and the entire city of Boston and all it's suburbs are under a "shelter in place" order. Holy Fuck![/reply Well, it's beginning to appear they are not Right Wing American born extremist. Islamist, very possible. MSNBC must be pissed with this news, as it goes against all their hopes of a white American.

Returning from a Self Imposed Banning. DOMA...Bill Clinton supported DOMA and signed it into law, including Don't Ask Don't Tell. Bill did not use his VETO Pen when DOMA was set before him, he signed it into law, because he supported it. Bill Clinton even tried to convience John Kerry to support traditional marriage in 2004 if my memory serves me well. Questions: Can a Christian or Muslim support only traditional marriage between One Man and One Women without being called a Bigot, homophobic or intolerant? How is it some must be tollerant of Same Sex marriage and yet the other side is not required to be tollerant of the view of Marriage between one man and one women?

+2 No pain, no gain is the Obama plan. The American people need to suffer and suffer greatly...with the media on their knees servicing the prez...they will make every effort to place the blame on the Rep's. When it comes to Obama, the media will swallow just about anything. -
Sweden? Sweden? Never been to Sweden...is it a place of true enlightenment, bless, and free stuff?

That picture scared the HELL out of me. Obama's right, if this madness is left un-checked we are doomed as a Nation.
