i agree with you when it comes to a person's specific job within the military, but that training comes after boot camp, aka basic training. what i'm saying is that all members of the military need to meet certain standards. that is why i suggested a 2 phase boot camp. phase 1 would be general military training to include physical readiness, ucmj, learning to identify ranks of all services, military protocal, and in general learning to stand tall and proud to serve your country. phase 2 would be branch specific basic training. as far as teaching someone to obey rapidly without question, it is sometimes necessary. in a combat situation, questioning your oic or co can get you and everybody around you killed. remember that the military is not like the civilian world. so in the 8 years since i've been in, the navy has no more overweight personnel, airforce nco's are respectful of officers, and marines have grown big guts and look like shit in uniform? bullshit. my wife is an officer in the airforce so i'm a little closer to things than the average civilian, but you still don't have to be in to see these things. the marines have the best military bearing, the most respect for their superior, and are very proud of who they are and what they do. they are the embodiment of what the military should be. all soldiers, sailors, and airmen could benefit from a good solid foundation that the marines could build. Realistically, if a person is in the AF or Navy, what value does it have to walk for 10 miles? Shouldn't boot camp for those services be revised to parallel the mission statement? I have never been in any armed services group. However, things change. Civilian schools have evolved to fit the new realities of workplace requirements. The mission of the Navy and AF has changed. If the point of boot camp is to ready a recruit, then it should reflect what they will encounter. while it may be true that an airman or sailor may not be required to walk ten miles in the real world, they are still in the military. that means that they should be in very good physical shape, know how to wear a uniform and look good wearing it, and respect superiors. these qualities were lacking when i was in the navy, and i doubt they will get better. it may even be benificial for all services to attend 6 weeks of a universal bootcamp run by the marines before moving on to a 4 to 6 week branch specific phase of bootcamp. i'll bet thay did, but somewhere between beating recruit, not letting them eat or sleep and just having them sit by a pool in the bahamas sipping rum drinks for 8 weeks there has to be a line. at what point does bootcamp become too soft? i went to navy bootcamp in 1992 and felt that it way way too soft, granted, it was the navy, but it still should have been more challenging both physically and mentally. the war is only one factor in dwindling recruit numbers. it wouldn't surprise me if in fact the war was a positive factor in recruitment. that fact is that the military just doesn't sound that appealing to people graduating high school. both the pay and the lifestyle are unattractive. as far as the draft goes, it would be political suicide for and party that mentions it and we both know that reps and dems are more concerned with retaining power than anything else, so a draft will never happen. that's exactly what it looks like to me. this will cause more problems down the road. there will be soldiers who cannot cope with the stress of deployment, much less a combat situation. this is a stupid move on the army's part. i just hope that the other armed services don't follow suit. i just saw on the news a piece about the army's new boot camp. they've done away with most of the yelling and have gone to corporate strategies such as "team building" and "mentoring". this is all to increase the success rate of recruits because the army is barely meeting or coming under their recruiting goals. the problem i have with this is that i believe it will create a weaker army. some recruits should be weeded out. boot camp needs to be a high stress environment in which people learn to perform in tense situations. i'm curious to hear the opinions of people who are in the army. the latest version of itunes does not work without also installing quicktime. quicktime has decided that it will be my media player for all videos. i don't like quicktime and want to use windows media player. the problem is that no matter what i do, my preferences and defaults get somehow overridden right after i change them. i am forced to use quicktime if i want to watch any video clip. i called apple, but they said that since my ipod is more than 90 days old, i would have to pay them to tell me how to get around this. i've been googling this and trying things all day, but so far nothing has worked. if anyone knows some secret, please help me. yes, its all part of the total package. when my wife comes home from work, the bed is made, all the laundry is done, the dishes are done, and the house is clean. also dinner is usually in the process of being cooked. this way she can come home and spend time with her family and not worry about a dirty house. we didn't have this problem, both of our boys started sleeping in their own room at 3 or 4 weeks. i think he does need to stand up. just because a woman becomes a mommy doesn't mean she can stop being a wife. it is definately in the best interest of the child for mom and dad to have a healthy relationship. bedtime for children in our house has been set so that my boys get plenty of time with mommy and i still get alone time with her before she falls asleep. you are right that it would be a pain in the ass and people would take advantage of it. that doesn't mean we shouldn't do something about it. i have a problem with property taxes anyway. i don't feel one should have to continue to pay for something they've already bought and payed for. if someone has been a productive enough member of society and has accumulated some assets before retirement, we can at least lat them keep what they've earned. don't forget that we'll be there some day too. In some places it's getting to the point where some people (mainly those on fixed incomes) can no longer afford to stay in their homes due to the value of their property rising. these are very sad situations. in all instances i've heard of, its been a retired couple or worse yet w retired widow that own there property free and clear but still can't afford to pay rent to the government. it seems to me that it would be very easy to provide a property tax exemption for those over a certain age who reside on said property. i aggree with you that its the middle class that is most effected by taxes, but for years i've heard about this incredible shrinking middle class. i don't buy it. everywhere i go i see new housing developement either just built or in various stages of construction. for the most part, these are three and four bedroom homes, not projects and not mansions. these days most families have at least one car, if not two. most people have computers, ipods, tvs, and various other non essencial devices. it is my observation that the middle class is not just surviving, but thriving. there are two things that can derail this, taxes and medical insurance.
