I'm new to the sport and it is important to me now. Don't know if it will change as I get more time in. My condolences on the loss of your dad. Once all of us kids became adults, my dad made the choice to not be part of the family and we weren't really that close while he was around. It still stung finding out he passed suddenly. It was weird having to learn who he had become by going through his things to get his personal business in order. This weekend I made a "coach" jump with two guys with 40+ jumps. We worked on maintaining fall rate with no contact RW. We all were of different size, dressed in RW-Freefly-street clothes and it was a blast popping up and sinking out and having them chase me. They did great. I look forward to getting my skill level to a point to get my coach rating. Take some time to rent/demo the different canopies/rigs. As a student, you are bound to have some not so pretty landings as you progress. Don't scuff up a nice new pretty container. I am about the same size as you and there are lots of available used rigs for sell. They hold their value when ready to resell and once you have figured out what you like, then splurge. During student status, rented a Spectre 190 and then went to a Sabre 190. I enjoyed the difference in flight characteristics of the Sabre immediately. Other students renting at the same time preferred the Spectre. I was able to stand up both right off the bat, just had more fun on the Sabre. I now have my own Sabre 1 170 and have not been slammed after 80 jumps. I realize that is not many on a canopy, but I get a nice consistant 800' snivel and only a few off heading openings that were most likely due to body position.
