What is so evil about requiring id to vote?
jcd11235 replied to Anvilbrother's topic in Speakers Corner
Could you name some? There are states in which it is an arrestable offense to refuse to identify oneself. i.e., say who you are, to police if asked. I'm not aware of any states where everyone is required to carry photo identification. Certainly that isn't true in most states, as you claim it to be. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! That's fair, to an extent. However, studies have shown that people who ride bikes for transportation spend more money at retailers (not just grocery stores). Further, when cities implement new bicycle infrastructure, local businesses benefit. It's reasonable to hypothesize that stores without parking lots would do fine, if the local infrastructure makes it practical to get around without a car. It is well understood that many more people would like to engage in active transportation, if it were safer. So those motorists aren't keeping the stores open for me so much as the local infrastructure prevents many people from engaging in active transportation. (This is closely related to the huge difference between perceived risk and objective risk of riding a bike on the street.) Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Not at all. So you would support motorists carrying their own weight? How would you propose they do so? Should there be an additional, large fuel tax, which would bring US gas prices more in line with European prices? Or would you prefer much higher registration fees? Or would you prefer having to pay a toll to even leave your own driveway each day? The latter is optimal if we are to believe that supply and demand is suitable for addressing hidden costs. Funny you should bring up food. How do you suppose grocery stores (or any other brick and mortar retailer) get the money to pay for their large parking lots that serve no purpose for bicycle commuters and walkers? Would you suggest that free parking should be eliminated everywhere, including private businesses? That would be how supply and demand fixes the problem of the hidden cost of parking. And yet, no one can seem to find examples of voter fraud that could be mitigated by picture ID verification at the polls. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -

It's not a different topic at all. It's analogous to the voter fraud you are so afraid of, with one small difference: it's actually real. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -
Supply and demand deals with such hidden costs very poorly. For example, as a car-free bicycle commuter, I am forced to heavily subsidize motor vehicle use. My taxes help pay hidden costs of petroleum, and I contribute far more money to road maintenance than the wear and tear caused by my use of the roads costs to repair. I'm forced to subsidize motorists in other ways, too, but those make my point. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

I think their reasoning is less altruistic. They don't want to get caught between users and the NSA, etc. If they have access to the data, they could be compelled to betray customers and turn it over. If they don't do so, they face legal consequences. It's just smart business to not have access to the data to begin with. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Voting is free, and poll taxes are expressly forbidden by the Constitution. Requiring a picture ID amounts to a poll tax, even though, for most people, the expense of an ID isn't very high. Further, voter fraud isn't currently problematic, and the small number of cases of voter fraud that we do experience would not have been prevented with an ID requirement. Guns are not free; they're pricey. By comparison, the cost of an ID is insignificant, so requiring one for a gun purchase does not place an undue burden on the purchaser. And the ID requirements, couple with background checks, have prevented many people from illegally purchasing guns. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -

Many people can get through life just fine without a picture ID. Why are you opposed to following the Constitution, which guarantees their right to vote? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -

Choosing not to vote is not the same as being disenfranchised. What makes you so sure? Primarily the definition of disenfranchise. So there is no problem with the 40%...you're absolutely sure of it. What I said was choosing not to vote is not the same as being disenfranchised. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -

Such voter fraud doesn't seem to be an actual problem as much as something to be used for fear mongering. According only to the democratic demographic. See GeorgiaDon's post above. It is quite informative. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -

I would argue that a denied vote is worse. The Constitution provides for standards that, if met, guarantee one's right to vote. It does not, however, require that these be minimum standards to be allowed to vote. For example, the 26th Amendment does not require one to be eighteen years of age to vote, but rather guarantees that no citizen who reaches the age of eighteen shall be deprived of the right to vote. If a state wanted to allow sixteen and seventeen year-old to vote, the Constitution does not prohibit such a standard. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -

I'm happy when I don't have to relinquish my card to the clerk, or at least don't lose sight of it when it's in the clerk's possession. To me, that seems the best way to prevent fraudulent use of the card. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -

You miss the point. It doesn't matter if anybody else has had to produce an ID for that. The fact remains, people are able to get by without doing so, whether that is from an understanding pharmacy employee (who may use their own ID, since they know the customer and know they won't exceed the the monthly limit), a friend or family member picking up the medication for them, or simply using a different medication. There are many people who get by just fine without a picture ID. Requiring one to vote would put an undue burden on them, amounting to an unconstitutional poll tax that disenfranchises citizens. It's funny how Republicans are normally against government stepping in, placing additional burdens on people to fix nonexistent problems. Why do they favor doing so here, if not to disenfranchise citizens who are more likely to vote for Democratic candidates? Besides, the hypothetical examples voter fraud that are typically raised wouldn't be fixed by requiring a picture ID, anyway. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -
That's certainly not the most reasonable interpretation of what I wrote. Feel free to make a topical point. You were, after all, complaining about people not playing the ball. Where's your ball? Well - It seems I asked you first. Actually, no, you didn't. Look upthread. Then try your very best to make a topical point. I'm still waiting for someone to defend the claim made in the thread title, given that most Americans favor more emphasis on wind energy, exceeded only by solar energy. Math tutoring available. I stand corrected. That I've never not been carded for such a purchase in the past nine years, however, makes it clear that it isn't a barrier to getting through life just fine without a picture ID. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -

Try going to a pharmacy where employees know you. If they do not follow the procedure and fill out the forms, it is illegal. Are you condoning someone breaking the law? Many such laws only require that when the purchase exceeds a certain (non-zero) amount. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -
