Origin of the species, where do you stand?
jcd11235 replied to shropshire's topic in Speakers Corner
I voted number three, because none of the choices captured my beliefs. I believe that God is the universe, so anything within the universe is a part of God. I don't believe that God is some separate entity. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -

I'm envious. I look forward to seeing one of his shows. He's definitely one of my favorite DJs. I have over 30 of his mixes, but my two favorites, Live from Dance Department and Live from Dance Valley (both pre-2002) were stolen, and I can't seem to be able to find new copies. I'm glad you enjoyed the show. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

I assume it is like skiing, it's easier to see what is in front of you. It's not unreasonable, just different. I can't help but think that if people knew it would be their own fault for being "rear ended" while in the fast lane, they would be far more likely to yield to faster traffic, alleviating some traffic congestion. I think people should be aware of traffic in their rearview mirror just as they are aware of traffic in front of them. Driving is inherently dangerous. There should be some sort of incentive for people to maintain awareness of all of the traffic around them. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

I must admit, I would like to see an autobahn type law where the fast car has the right of way in the fast lane, and the slow car has the right of way in the slow lane. I really don't understand why the slow car virtually always has the right of way in the US. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

I think most people would consider me liberal in our current political climate. I am anything but close minded. I don't care by what name you call your God, or even if you believe in a God. I don't care what chemicals you ingest into your body; it's none of my business. I don't care if you choose to own weapons or not, nor do I care if those weapons are registered. I don't care who you choose to have consensual sex with, or what the gender of your partner is. I do not believe we should force women to have children they do not want to have, even if they are pregnant. I would not consider these close-minded beliefs. I do not recite the pledge. I don't stand for the national anthem. My allegiance is to a holistic world community, not any single nation in that community. IMO the "my country, right or wrong" philosophy is a load of crap, and serves only to enable a population of sheeple. BTW, I did serve my country. Had I known then what I know now, however, I would not have made that mistake. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

What religion are you? And what does it mean?
jcd11235 replied to chigbee's topic in Speakers Corner
How could they all be true when they contradict each other. Does truth contradict itself? Every major religion in the world except Christianity teaches that you must do something or many things in order to earn your own righteousness or enlightenment. Christianity trumps all others by claiming that you can do nothing in this regard. Righteousness only comes through repentance and faith in the Savior. All other paths definitely lead somewhere but they do not lead to same place. Perhaps you should further study other religions. All the religions of the world have FAR more in common than ways in which they differ. If Christianity works for you, that's great. No one is trying to convince you to denounce your faith. However, Christianity doesn't do anything for the Christian that Buddhism doesn't do for the Buddhist, or that Islam doesn't do for the Muslim, or Judaism doesn't do for the Jew (to name but a few). Are you familiar with the Bible's Tower of Babel metaphor? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -
To be fair, pot smokers tend to hold the smoke in their lungs much longer than their tobacco smoking counterparts. Still, as widespread as marijuana smoking is, the lack of statistical evidence showing long term damage to the lungs of heavy users lends credibility to those who claim it is not a dangerous drug. This is exactly why I think drugs should be legalized. Right now, we aren't taking advantage of the black market, and we're still footing the bill for treatment. Get rid of the laws that make drugs illegal "for our own good" and tax the hell out of them. They'll still be cheaper than what the dealer on the corner sells them for, and then we've increased our tax revenue to provide for the treatment of the junkies. They've then paid for it themselves, taking little to no money out of our pockets. I believe most taxes should be directly applied to fixing what the taxed item damages. Make the people doing the damage pay to fix it. Examples: Cigarette tax: addiction treatment, medical care, lung cancer research Gas tax: anti-pollution measures, green power, fixing roads, research on better fuel efficient vehicles What about drugs currently illegal that are generally not dangerous. The overwhelming majority of perceived dangers of cannabis, for example, are not based on experimental/statistical data, but rather false propaganda. Should cannabis users have to subsidize the poor choices of others? How do we determine which substances to tax? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

A good number of teachers do not allow the use of wikipedia for your info. Even the creator of the site says that http://chronicle.com/wiredcampus/article/1328/wikipedia-founder-discourages-academic-use-of-his-creation Since when has SC been held to university standards? Wikipedia is not a very good source for many purposes. For other things, it is very good for a basic overview, like any other encyclopedia. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! Wikipedia is a decent encyclopedia type source. It is not a scolarly journal. It does have the benefit of usually being labeled as being in dispute when an entry has a bias. Good point. Incidentally, the exact same observation could be made about Communists compared to communists. Nationalism doesn't necessarily imply anything other than way too much pride. That part of the definition doesn't include mass murder. Nor does the definition of a car include a CD player. However, many cars have them. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! Quite wrong from Wikipedia: "Fascism is a radical political ideology that combines elements of corporatism, authoritarianism, nationalism, militarism, anti-anarchism, socialism and anti-liberalism." The Nazis were formally the Nationalist Socialists. I oversimplified, perhaps, to make the point that fascism was extreme rightward, while naziism was extreme leftward. It wasn't the economics that was bad, it was the EXTREME NATIONALISM. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

I think there is a difference between preferring to live in one country over another, and feeling that one is superior because of the country in which he lives. I would think nationalism would have had very negative connotations since WWII. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Patriotism is a love of country. There is nothing wrong with loving ones country. For example I love the US. That doesn't, however, mean that I think the US is superior to all other countries. By nationalism, I mean a common feeling that one is superior to others or should have authority over others due to their nationality. For example Hitler felt that German's were inherently superior to other peoples, just because they were German. When people think that their nationality makes them somehow superior to others, that can be a dangerous thing. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Does moral objectivity mean there is a God?
jcd11235 replied to steveorino's topic in Speakers Corner
Go ahead, I've thick skin. What do you see wrong with the logic? Sorry, the thickness of someone else's skin does not dictate to me whether I should act like an a-hole or not. I personally believe the assassination was immoral. However, I cannot look at it objectively and still assume it was absolutely immoral, based on my beliefs, or even the beliefs of the majority of others. Someone thought it was right, or it would not have happened. There are 6 billion people in the world, and there are 6 billion different sets of morals. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! Geesh, talk about missing the point. There are immoral people -- nobody is debating that. Gawd! Perhaps it was not I who missed the point. The very existence of the ability for "immoral" people to exist proves there are no absolute morals. That is what I said. If a single person considered it as good thing, then it cannot be absolute. The assassin would not have acted had he not considered it to be the right thing to do. Therefore, MLK's assassination was not absolutely immoral. As you said yourself, 'By definition absolute can't be "close enough.'" Since MLK's assassination was a murder, murder is not absolutely immoral. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! nazi = extreme nationalism + socialism fascist = extreme nationalism + capitalism I just wish people would use the terms in the right context. It makes no sense to me when someone on the right is referred to as a nazi, or someone on the left is called a fascist. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
