I have two customers with 5 cell Swifts that I pack for. I tell them every time that they should upgrade to something with more modern landing characteristics. But I have no concern that they will open and function as designed. I have 3 landings on them myself. I've seen blue ones and yellow ones, but no white ones. Maybe they all came through Ralph. I fail to see what vague claims about a letter from Mr Galloway have to do with the expected lifetime of any canopy. Even those made by Precision. I will continue to follow their recommendations and the industry standard regarding canopy life. Namely that it is undetermined. If you are going to claim he would not pack a 15 year old reserve you could at least quote exactly what he said. Otherwise you are merely paraphrasing and your claim is even more meaningless. Yes, this very basic change that completely rearranges the AAD placement in the container is found on the website under support/support articles for some reason. But even UPT never updates their manuals. They just put up an article in a random place on their website and say "good enough". There is an SB explaining how to move the cutter on older containers as well. Buried even deeper in the support menus. But change the manual, naaaa, you'll figure it out when the cutter sleeve is not where the manual says it should be. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. You need to dig around the support section of the Mirage Systems website. Or let me do it for you. http://www.miragesys.com/media/supportarticle/AAD%20Installation%20instructions.pdf Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

biggest reserve you safely put in a wings W2 ?

I can sell you a Raven 3. It will fit, I promise. Give it to your rigger and tell him some guy on Dizzy told you it would be all good. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free. -
If you are shooting tandem and the TM sucks you down to where you need this, you both are grounded. In other words you already have a "visual altitude indicator" in front of you. I like to call it "the tandem pair". Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

I'm just going to wait for Google to design a self opening and self landing rig. Then I won't need this. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

When is it OK to make/receive phone calls during a skydive?
gowlerk replied to NeoX's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Same as cameras. After 200 jumps. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free. -
I use a D5000, almost the same. It works well once I found the correct plug for the switch. If you want a fast frame rate for more than about 5 frames turn off the lens distortion correction feature. The buffer fills very quickly with it on. Even with it off it fills up and stops shooting after about 9 frames. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. If you ask PD for a USA produced reserve they will provide one at the regular price. They maintain US production facilities in order to be eligible to supply the US government. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

He does seem to toss the drouge when he gets the right side up more often than most. But of course these are cherry picked jumps. It's most likely that he has little faith in the vidiot and feels a strong need to get it out quickly to help out the poorly flying camera man. Let me be the first to say. I looked at the vid and I don`t see your point. Rock on dude, you are a fool. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

Now I'm starting to feel like maybe I've been reckless in the past. In my supply bin I have a container with reserve closing loops in it. Most of them are pre-made ones from Vigils, CYPRES, or M2s that I've installed. When I need a new loop for a repack I just grab one. I don't even know what brand any of them are. Please don't tell on me. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

Most FJCs I've seen teach not to flare. The usual thinking is that the descent rate of one person under two canopies is low enough that a flare is not needed and that depending on the configuration could have unpredictable results, especially if a student flares high which is quite common. No flare and PLF is the norm. You and your wife are still two people with only one canopy each. It's not the same. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. I've been watching this thread develop and deteriorate since this morning. I can just imagine what we'll have by evening. There is likely two very different problems here. One is a questionable TM who possibly has some bad habits and attitudes that need to change. The other is a bitter man who saw the problem and dealt with it very poorly and is looking for some validation among his online peers. It is likely that DZ management had to make a choice to back one person here. For better or worse you are the one who was judged expendable. There is nothing for you to do now but move on. You can only damage yourself further by continuing to badmouth both the DZ and the TM. You've made your case. Most of us don't know you or him, those that you wanted to speak to have heard the message. Time to let it go, it's no longer your problem. Good luck Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

Those instructions do not apply closing loops used with loop cutter AADs. If you could use one of those it would never break. However weak, thin, easily damaged loops are one of the compromises needed to allow us to use cutter type AADs. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Bart, get a CYPRES manual!! Better yet, get a rigger rating. It would help you immensely in your gear sales to have more knowledge. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

FAA Parachute Rigger Handbook, chapter 7 page 105: "If the loop is to be used with a reserve container, it may be required to sew the finger-trapped part of the loop for security. If this is the case, simply sew the length of the finger-trapped portion of the loop with a single needle machine before hot knifing the end. Start at the running end and sew towards the eye of the loop. Stop sewing approximately .12" from the eye and then backstitch a minimum of 1" [Figure F]. Trim the end with the hot knife." Please see the instructions for installing a closing loop into a CYPRES equipped reserve container. They are NOT sewn. Please don't start down this path of misinformation. It's just another example of bad interweb advice from an unqualified person with limited knowledge. This type of closing loop is no longer used in sport reserve containers in general and NEVER with ANY cutter equipped AAD. Although if you did use a loop like this it would never break. Weak thin easily damaged closing loops is one of the compromises we make to allow use of cutter type AADs. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. If you lived up in the frozen, and just beginning to thaw Northlands like I do, you would know that this week and next is when all skydivers want repacks. To get back to your original question which no one else has answered yet... Make sure you spend some time with that rigger getting a full explanation of whatever his findings are. If there was a flaw, have him show it to you. Perhaps the finger-trapped loop wasn't stitched down. Perhaps too much force was put on the loop with a leverage handle. Perhaps there was a sharp edge on a washer that cut into the cord. Whatever it was, you have the right to see it - it's your life on the line. Also have him show you the next loop he will use on your rig, and what's being done different to prevent that same thing from happening again. You need the confidence that the pack job will be correct. And then continue to do a thorough pre-flight check of your rig before each jump. Before you get too excited by this post you need to know that the finger trapped loop in this reserve is not supposed to be stitched down. This post is basically pointing you toward not trusting your rigger without coming right out and saying so. But the person who wrote it is displaying a lack of knowledge about how the loop is even made. Keep an open mind. This loop broke for a reason, no doubt about that, but you won't find the answer here. And if and when you do find an answer, and even if you don't, please report back to us. This is a serious issue, as you seem to realize. The answer is important. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

Yes I did. That's exactly what is quoted here, and what GGGGIO quoted as well. The part that says...... (other than high-altitude, high-speed, or ejection kinds) Excludes the MC4/5 system as it is a high-altitude system according to GGGGIO, who's profile indicates that he works for the manufacturer of these systems. It is indicated that the reserve (which is identical to the main in the system) is not tested or designed to open with an altitude loss that is acceptable for an emergency parachute. So even though is does have a military identification number, it is in a class that is specifically excluded. But go ahead and use either of the canopies from the system as a main, just understand that neither can be considered a certificated parachute for use a a reserve or as an emergency parachute. Here is a link to that circular: http://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Advisory_Circular/AC_105-2E.pdf But don't just take my word for it. I`m just rehashing what someone who works for Airborne Systems says about one of their past products. I don`t know for sure, he could be just foolin' around for all I know. Go ahead, jump whatever you can get away with. You'll probably be just fine. Really. To put this in perspective, not TSO'd does not mean not safe. It's just an exploration of the original question about whether or not it's legal in the USA. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
-
The question from the OP was regarding legality of using this system for sport jumping. GGGGIO's answer is clearly no. As well he gives a good reason why it's not a good idea to do so. Now we have some others stating more or less "I'm doing it, and I see others doing it so it's alright" Take a look at GGGGIO's profile. After you do that carefully consider who's internet advise you prefer to follow. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

The M2 I have here came with what appears to be a genuine Smiley. It has "CYPRES" engraved on it. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
