  1. We are nowhere near the maximum. The real question is what kind of world we want to live in. Biodiversity is already declining due to our species. As we dominate and populate the Earth more we become more vulnerable to large scale disease events. But war and breakdown of society in fights over resources may come first. Most likely worldwide events will not happen but localized breakdowns will. In a dystopian society access to the medical care you and I take for granted will not be available for most people.
  2. It is certainly a growing problem in some parts of the world. Especially the Indian sub-continent and sub-Saharan Africa. The solution is education of and rights for women. A lot of the key points are here: https://www.un.org/en/global-issues/population#:~:text=The world's population is expected, billion in the mid-2080s. And my favourite go to.....https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Projections_of_population_growth
  3. It mostly comes down to how much freedom and what options women have. Small minority? I'm not sure how you can think that when the proof is right there. The population in the most developed nations is declining despite our longer lives.
  4. Not really so much as you are assuming among the young and educated women that I know. There is a reason the birth rate in western countries is not high enough to sustain the population without immigration.
  5. Electric motors go round and round. ICEs have pistons that must reciprocate. They have become pretty darn good in spite of that, but now that batteries are good enough EVs have a large advantage. They aren't even all that much greener, but it doesn't matter because they are just plain better.
  6. While he's sleeping someone else is plotting the next massacre of innocents. Putting him to sleep is about as effective as a bunch of T&Ps.
  7. It is typically called a purge. Quite common in non democratic governments.
  8. There is also the fact that they had to consider the possibility of needing to defend the nation from invasion by meddling imperialist Europeans, especially the English lurking just across the northern border.
  9. I know. There are cat ladies but no catfish ladies.
  10. Stop it please, both of you. No one wins at cat wars.
  11. Well....if you can't tell the difference between good and evil maybe they are the same.
  12. Large parts of the conservative orthodoxy stood four square against the maga hoard and Trump in 2015. When he clinched the nomination most of them reluctantly came on board. When he came to power that reluctance mostly evaporated. The same thing will happen if he regains power.
  13. So, you claim to dislike the maga agenda of American primacy, yet somehow think that it is wrong for the neighbours to comment? Frankly full of freaking unfriendly foolishness.
  14. Sort of like any flying. It's the take offs and landings that are most dangerous.
  15. Musk probably needed to appease his Saudi investors.
  16. And now Walmart is the latest giant advertiser to self fornicate. https://www.cnn.com/2023/12/01/business/walmart-advertiser-ads-x-elon-musk/index.html
  17. This Bob Dylan song sums it up. I'll stand on his grave to make sure that he's dead. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEmI_FT4YHU
  18. To Bob Iger no less. It's a good thing Disney is woke and probably has characters who can do as Elon is asking.
  19. I've been told that it takes all kinds. I too can only marvel in stunned disbelief at the level of stupidity required to hold some of the opinions I see expressed here at times. Yet there they are, often winning elections. So many WTF moments.
  20. Because we can't stand on guard against it if we don't understand just how much of it is in our societies. This isn't FB, your feed is not curated to cater to what you already believe.
  21. Are women still allowed to travel without a close male relative as guardian?
  22. I have read about this. And it is frightening. The most frightening part of it is that it is here already in 3 states. Arizona, Arkansas, and Louisiana. In those states there is a optional form of marriage available that only provides for divorce in limited circumstances. Just like the bad old days. I'm not sure what happens if one of the couple leaves the state like the old days of going to Nevada for a divorce. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covenant_marriage
  23. Berkeley Breathead to the rescue.
