Alexandria Shooting: Shot heard around the world? [On Topic]
gowlerk replied to jgoose71's topic in Speakers Corner
Legal insanity is not what I was talking about. That is a bar that moves around from jurisdiction and era at the whim of legislators. When I talk about a lone wacko I simply mean that he is an individual who almost all normal people will not copy. He is not going to inspire any groups to rise up and follow him. They are only linked to murder in your mind. They are as guilty of murder exactly as much as the pizzagate shop owner is guilty of child sex abuse. Shame be upon those who would make such poisonous accusations. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

Gunman fires on Alexandria park during GOP baseball practice

I saw this in an FB post today. I don't know if it's true. Anyone? Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free. -
I can't tell you if you should pack it or if you should test it. That all would depend on inspecting it and knowing something about it's history. I can answer your title question though. Yes. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

Yes, I suppose you are right. What I really should have said is that I believe my technique would have worked better. What I saw was a canopy with line twists that started out flying level. But then as he worked it I believe he induced the harness and therefore the lines to become uneven which started the canopy turning. At that point he was nearly done for, and it almost seemed miraculous that he recovered. What I have found works with a level flying canopy is to simply draw my extremities inward. Become long and narrow like a spinning dancer. That allows the twists to come out quickly and easily. And yes, I also believe that the wing loading allowed on small reserves is just plain foolish. Then there is also the ongoing debate about the speed of Optimum openings. That one seemed a little slow for a Skyhook opening. The longer it sniveled the more it twisted up. Edit to add, I just noticed that the Skyhook must have released prematurely. I can plainly see that the P/C was definitely having trouble clearing the freebag for some reason. Edit one more time to add, I should probably spend more time watching vids before I comment. The more I watch it the deeper the questions get. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

A Curve VC3 size will fit that range. But only if the 170 is a low bulk canopy. Like a Pulse. It will not fit a reserve larger than an Optimum 160. A VC4 will fit one size larger canopies but is really not suited to 135s. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

Then don't say it. The left is not a party. Yes, the left sees very bad things when they look at Trump. But so does very large portions of the right. The current situation is unprecedented. But YOU are the one talking nonsense. Trump is being demonized because he behaves more or less like a demon. The social disruption you seem to be predicting is not going to happen. But the political situation will in all likelihood deteriorate further. In the end it will not be the left that ends the Trump regime. It will be the Republicans turning against him. You are mad if you think the left is going to revolt. These are the same people who blew the election to Trump by being too lazy and unmotivated to bother voting. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free. -

I don't agree at all. A skydive should not be treated as a carnival ride. It is an adult sport and children should not be participating. My 2 cents. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free. -
It's very possible that you are within the weight limit for the gear. Looking at the container will tell you nothing about the canopies inside it. They have their own specs and limits. But just because you are within the limit does not mean it's appropriate for a student first jump. There probably is no record of which particular rig you were using. But the instructors who were there know EXACTLY what you were using. If they will not tell you when you ask then you have to wonder why. But it makes no real difference. You signed the waiver and you took your chance will be the bottom line. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

Snap out of it America. This is NOT a "shot heard around the world". It's not an insurrection. It's one wacko among many. How the hell can this be so important compared to the Gabby Giffords thing where a bunch of people died, including a child? Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free. -
My comment is that you should find out exactly what canopy you were using and exactly what it is rated for. Brand name, model, and exact size. Nothing less. Students should be given parachutes that are large enough so that even if they screw up the flare they won't break bones. Students regularly do poor landings. Over sized canopies that are forgiving enough to handle this are standard. You are too heavy for that to work apparently. Liberals generally support the right of everyone to worship the God they choose. They detest other people forcing worship on everyone. Just like your beloved founding fathers wrote into your wonderful constitution. You could not possibly be more wrong. No one, not even atheists detest God. They detest narrow minded bigoted fundamentalist assholes. Do you know any of those? Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free. -
Damn, that raised the pulse rate a bit just watching it. Meh....he just had a stable reserve with line twists. But he used poor technique on the probably overloaded canopy and started it to turn before he figured it out! Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Wish Australia did that. We had to get the one month membership when we made a few jumps there. Had a ton of fun, but noticed the Aussies' association has a pretty tight lock on the game. -
Probably not. But if so your pilot chute may be either too small or too worn out. What percentage of jumps have line twists and when you get them how many turns do you get? I'm going back to what I told you earlier. Stab your legs straight down and do your best to load the harness evenly. A lot of people have fixed this problem in this way before. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

I do. A lot of the US has the football mentality - it's two teams, and the only thing that matters is that their team wins. Nothing else matters. Fights in the stands? No problems as long as the other guys get arrested. If your guys get arrested, it's police brutality. Cheating on the field? Again, no problem as long as the other team loses. What whining losers they are to bring up that technicality. Precious snowflakes can't handle losing. If your team loses - you were ROBBED! Unfair! The whole system is rigged. And we've been playing into that mindset for years. Some people are no longer able to see shades of gray; everything is either white (Trump) or black (liberals.) My take is that both sides are just spoiled rotten sissies who have things so good that they need to fight each other to get over the sheer boredom. America can only pull together in times of crisis. No crisis? No problem. You'll just make enemies of each other until a real enemy comes along. It's the same reason that otherwise perfectly normal people skydive. Life is so easy, food and shelter are so plentiful that regular life is just too boring. Gotta have some stress and strife to keep ourselves balanced. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

What kind of 190 is it? and how old are the lines? Why do you think the bag is spinning before line stretch? There is no real way for you to know this. Earlier you stated this: Which makes me ask two things. Does the harness fit you well? You state that you bought the rig from your instructor. It may be that you compromised on a good fit because the rig was available. And the whole "body position" thing. It gets blames for a lot of things and is poorly understood. DO NOT let your canopy "toss me around like a rag doll". When that happens you lose control of your body position and often your harness will load on one side before the other. Especially if it fits poorly. That will instantly start your canopy turning before it fully opens. That's what line twists are. Instead, when you feel your canopy get to line stretch and stand you up push both your legs straight down and evenly toward the planet. Try to keep your hips even and try to keep even weight on both sides of your legstraps. Then you will be steering it straight instead of just letting it go off the road and into the ditch! Begin flying your canopy as soon as it is exposed to the air. Don't wait for it to decide on it's own where to go! Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

No one really knows how long you will be on a 170. That depends on what you want. I moved down to a 170 Stiletto in '95. From my 220 Cruislite. Many people thought that was extremely aggressive. Although I have jumped many smaller canopies since then, that Stiletto is still my main ride. If you can afford it get yourself a nice new rig with a PD176R and the main that suits the style of flying you want to do. Get a nice name brand container in that size and it will hold it's resale value well in case you do want to downsize later. I suggest PD canopies not because they are better, but because they are easier to resell. Your reasons for downsizing seem reasonable. Quagmirian is correct about some people being in a hurry for the wrong reasons. The step from a 190 to a 170 is not huge, but it is significant. If you are ready for it you will definitely find a large increase in responsiveness. And of course a corresponding decrease in forgiveness. But we do skydiving because it's fun, not because we are trying to live risk free lives! Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

Full fitting main containers are hard to pack. If you are going to hire packers, or if you are a masochist go for the Micron. If you are going to do your own packing and want to do lots of jumps and not be discouraged because you hate packing get the bigger container. In other words, do yourself a favour is my recommendation. Every time. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

It doesn't make any difference. It's about 3rd party liability. (The airport, spectators, aircraft on the ground, other people's property) It has nothing at all to do with your funeral or your medical expenses. That's the heart of your problem. You only see it as about you. It's not about you or how you skydive or how safe you are at all. It's about our commitment to running our operation the way we have agreed to. It's about us living up to our standards. And it's about us supporting the National Association that we perceive as supporting us and the sport in our country. It doesn't matter to me if you don't see the organization as worthwhile. I do, and we do and we make the rules at the DZ we own. Don't like it? Well you know what you can do........ You can be part of the team or not. It's your choice. If you want to play on our team you must join our club. Or you can start your own club. We'll miss you. But not that much!
