  1. Reminds me a little of this....https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/article/ellis-island-millions-immigrants-united-states-america Also a difficult journey.
  2. Well, I can't say I know a lot of Newfies. But of the ones I have met I've never met one I didn't like.
  3. We bribed them to join. I'm not really sure why, but there it is.
  4. I do believe that more Canadians are starting to feel that the rate is now too high. The housing shortage is really pinching hard and goodwill is wearing a little thin in places. The whole country can feel the pendulum swinging to the right.
  5. I do believe that is the plan here for managing the public debt. GDP growth seems to be the sum of population growth and inflation. Population growth for Canada in 2021 was 0.5% compared to 0.1% in the US. Maybe it is time for a new wave of immigrants.
  6. That same video is making the rounds on social media labeled as "Tesla truck runs of of power on icy road". In any case getting up the hill is about having enough traction. The EV is probably always near the weight limit on the drive tires because of the batteries. For some reason that video shows it coming to a stop.
  7. Absolutely. The US and Canada are both greatly underpopulated compared to other parts of the world with large areas of arable land. However, the people already settled here don't really want larger cities and more population. Do you? Do you want large scale immigration to be the new normal? It would seem like you are not happy with the current inhabitants of the nations then. Is it really so filled with slackers that you think newcomers are the only answer? In a way it is, but not for that reason. Population growth would be negative without immigration. And yes, once again I only have questions not answers.
  8. When I say partially justified mostly I mean that sheer numbers could get quite high if nothing is done to control them. How high is really unknown and that is what scares even those with more tolerance for immigration. If there truly were an "open border" how many people would flood across it? Seriously I don't know but likely several 10s of millions per year. That supposed number justifies an amount of concern that runs into fear. It could cause large scale disruptions of economies, even more extreme housing shortages than now, possibly 3rd world style slums and other unknown changes. I do know for sure that any political party that does not call for control of immigration will never win any elections.
  9. Just make sure to let them know that it gets pretty cold in the winter north of Kansas or so.
  10. Remember that fear thing? Fear of being overwhelmed is real, and at least partially justified. This is the nature of nation states and is the source of anxiety about a global government. God didn't create nations or borders did She? If your nation hadn't of been so unwilling to take on so many non-Europeans after the Spanish American war it could have conquered the rest of Mexico and then you would have had a far more defensible border in the south.
  11. Trump's appeal is something I can never understand. None of the justifications people use come even close to making sense to me. I can only assume that some people are just attracted to evil things. I suppose we all have some evil within us and that some of us have enough that we are okay with him. I seriously feel this way. If you support Trump you have evil in your heart. And if you think I am American bashing please be aware that there are proportionately nearly as many Canadians who support him and wish we could have leaders like him. It is very disheartening.
  12. It is the job of the US electorate. Save yourselves. The R party should have done the job, but it failed due to its inherent greed and hunger for power. Like Smokey Bear always says, only you can prevent wildfires. God bless America.
  13. Making images of sex with a minor is considered exploitative and is not legal in Canada. The age of consent is 16 (1t was 14 until 2008) for sexual contact that is not considered exploitative. Anyone in any posistion of authority over the minor is prohibited from sexual contact. Contact by those close enough in age is allowable for minors.
  14. I don't much feel a need to do that.
  15. I don't know the joke. But I assume that the south is the weak and submissive wife being dominated by the strong decisive north.
  16. Some people think that a marriage is directly comparable to nation building.
  17. Some people would consider that clinging to a false equivalency. Mostly because the comparison is immediately and verifiably false.
  18. If I were to decide on the narrow issue of single use plastic bag bans I would be against them. If you prefer to use reusables more power to you. If you operate a retail store and want to refuse to supply them, more power to you. I don't favour bans. I also stand in favour of more clearly worded questions than the one quoted.
  19. I was telling Brent nothing at all. I was telling Joe what Brent is likely to do. Try to keep up.
  20. Take care of your own backyard first. Remember, the idea is not to solve the whole problem all at once. If BH insists that he needs an F-350 at least his wife might get a Prius and his kids will probably follow her, not their dinosaur dad.
  21. The same way that the other side does it. You repeat it over and over again. It has always worked before and there is no reason it can’t work with this. It sounds plausible and is easy to implement in tiny steps. It is essentially what is being done anyway. It’s only a question of how to present it.
  22. It is no longer fashionable to deny our role in climate change. The new (really old but being brought forward) tactic is to convince the population that it is a done deal and that there is no use wasting resources to try to change it. The beauty of this argument is that it is far harder to dispute. You can’t really prove the effects of making efforts to change. The best answer is to make clear that limiting the damage as much as possible is still worthwhile.
  23. Yes it's true the Confederacy was merely defending "property rights".
