I would agree. They are not natural allies, they are rivals who currently have reasons to do business with each other.
  2. Congratulations. And here's hoping world events don't interfere.
  3. That has been the custom here. That is merely because minority parties, (chiefly the NDP) think that aligning so closely with the Liberals will result in the electorate punishing them next time around. They stubbornly stick to the dream of forming a left wing government some day. But our system certainly allows for deals that include cabinet participation from multiple parties.

Well.....making peace or some semblance of it with Iran would reduce dependency on Russian energy. Sigh.....so many compromises.

There is NATO to consider. If a NATO member is attacked, or even threatened Kaliningrad would be the first logical target for the west. That would be hard to defend.

That remains to be seen. I am not convinced that a year from now there will be significant resistance. On one level I hope there is. But at the same time I fear the brutality of the repression it will bring. It's not like Russia has not ruled over Ukraine before, they may just find a way to cope.

What I don't really understand is why the rivalry between Russia and the west even exists any longer. Both Ukraine and Russia should be part of NATO by now. I can only assume that after the cold war ended and Stalinism collapsed elements of the KGB et al just could not accept moving on to the very prosperous future that the Russian people deserve and could have had.

This is not correct. Most Russians support the goal, although they may not support having a war unless it goes relatively well.

It is impossible to know if he is crazy enough to deploy nukes, tactical (which means on the soil he is trying to control) or strategic. Either would be a colossal disaster for everyone in the world. It is impossible to know if the Russian military would even allow it or if that is a line he would be stopped from crossing. The most sensible thing to believe is that he is bluffing. But who wants to make that bet? What is clear is that there is no military power in the world, none, that is willing to send troops or aircraft to assist Ukraine. The world did little in 2014 and will only do a small amount more now.

Anyway your position seems to be that the US can answer this on a military to military level. Although I am reasonably sure that you are correct, neither the US nor the world is willing to pay the price.

It will be a small fraction of the number that were killed in Iraq. Some lives matter more though.

Putin has received push-back. He pulled every string he could to get out of the last round of sanctions, but Trump could not get it done for him. He will feel the pain and he will feel real pressure from those he must please to remain in power. His mastery of the west is nothing compared to what he must do to stay alive in the Kremlin. But apparently it is worth it to him to be remembered in history as Vlad The Great.
  16. Yes, and similar in Canada. As I said they exploit the rules because there is no majority in society on most issues.

    Ukraine

Yes. The only effective response that the west can mount at this time is a long term disciplined approach to containing Russia. But the west is not disciplined at all and rarely considers the longer term.
  18. Germany is controlled by the CDU who received about 35% of the vote. Canada is controlled by the Liberal Party which also received about 35%. Democracies all have rules which are understood and exploited by the ruling classes. The only thing that makes them work is the very real possibility that if the people get angry enough they can kick the bums out.

He is the only leader willing to risk a third world war over Ukraine. Thankfully. There is a reason why Ukraine was never really seriously considered for NATO membership. And the possibility of this event is that reason.

That would feel good. Until the reality set in. Where would you land your troops? You are the first person I have seen make this call. I assume you are kidding.

Putin controls enough nukes to make challenging him a wild gamble. He is gnashing his teeth and growling like a mad dog. Maybe it's too keep the west off balance or maybe he is off balanced. Hard to know. The only people who can do anything about it and make Russia pay the price are the Ukrainians themselves. Time will tell, but in a modern surveillance society run by former KGB/GRU security operatives it will be very hard to run a guerilla war. But you are wrong about how serious this is. Putin's goal is much larger.

I am hearing rumours that Trudeau is planning to declare an emergency and deploy mounted police and a fleet of tow trucks to Ukraine.
  24. In my case it would be more accurate if it read fuck the right wing of the US political system.
  25. Well that’s kind of cute. But for some reason no one thought it was important to give those any foundation in law. Unlike the right to own slaves!
