That is exactly what is happening. Large quantities. https://www.politico.com/news/2022/03/04/ukraine-funneling-weapons-military-aid-00014189#:~:text=The weapons deliveries — missiles%2C small, locations along the front lines.

Judging by the reaction so far to the current events I feel fairly certain that Putin will have to assume we would honour the treaty. Or at the very least he would have to consider it possible. He had no real reason to think we would defend Ukraine, and he was only partly correct. Invading NATO countries is not something he could even contemplate unless somehow Russia were to become much more powerful that it is now, or the west much weaker.

Jerry, they are all full members of NATO. The treaty would obligate us all to defend them. And we would.

Yes, for some reason there seems to be a line there. It is not seen as an act of war to supply Ukraine with deadly hardware. I guess it is all a matter of how we think the Russians will react. We believe that if we shoot at them they may go ballistic. Literally. It is not impossible that they may do so anyway. May you live in interesting times.
  5. Many women's professional basketball players decide to play in Russia during the WNBA's offseason for a chance to compete and take advantage of the high salaries overseas teams offer. Griner has made as much as $1.5 million a year in Russia, while she had a base salary of $215,000 last season for the Mercury. It is hard not to think that this woman pretty much deserves whatever happens now. The rest of the world is shunning greed and she is embracing it.
  6. Yes, after the invasion started Trump was quick to let the world know that "he is sure there are good people on both sides". But seriously, even the orange demon has sniffed the wind and called for mad dog Vlad to back down. https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/596484-trump-calls-the-russian-invasion-a-holocaust-urges-russia-to-stop
  7. Were they Americans or Ukrainians? What are you saying here?
  8. I seriously can't see anything to laugh at here. Or any other reaction. Nothing, I don't get it.

It would clearly be a declaration of war. At least if they tried to enforce it.

We have not heard from our coldest cold warrior and watchman on the wall Ron D about this Russian adventure yet. I wonder if he has a copy on our transmissions anymore? Maybe this is the beginning of the real SHTF.
  11. D's and a couple Rinos who have been censured and will shortly be primaryed out of office.

I also question the readiness of the missile fleet. On the other hand Russia is capable of repeated launches to the ISS. They could be using the profits from that to pay for upkeep of those other rockets.

No, I don't believe they applied for membership in either the EU or Nato. But they had leaders who were interested in exploring the possibility. Now they have asked to join the EU, but that is for show mostly because they certainly don't qualify and it would be at least a decade long process.

I don't know them either. But it is said that Putin has appeal as a white Christian who regularly supports the church and it's conservative positions on social issues. That doesn't necessarily mean they support the invasion of Ukraine though. Heck, no one is prefect.

And then he wonders why outsiders have so much to say about the US!

Yes, I more or less agree with all that. And a large presence, or at least large enough to be a clear trigger on his doorstep is needed. The question is where is the threshold of his door? I don't recall Ukraine inviting us in before the assault began. There is no easy answer.

Yes, and not just in the US. All over the western world the ideas of the nazis had supporters. If Hitler wasn't such a poor strategist and tactician our world could be a very different place by now. I'm of the opinion that if Trump and Trumpism had got started when he was 15 or 20 years younger he would have succeeded in turning the world upside down.

Here is a story about some. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/25/technology/russia-supporters.html There are some people everywhere who take the side of the authoritarian. In the US those people are almost exclusively R supporters. Mostly Trump supporters. So you could use the word "swathes" I suppose. But remember a swath is just a small part of a field. There were swaths of Hitler supporters in the west until that position became so dangerous to speak of that no one did.

Realistically the west led by the USA could go all in and push Russia out of Ukraine and secure eastern Europe in general. It would be very risky for the whole world on a nearly existential basis. Is it worth that risk? Keith is the only person I know of who seems to think it is. I certainly don't. What Russia is doing is pretty much the way the game has been played for centuries. What Keith is proposing is that we all join in because that's what history teaches. But the game is not the same as it ever was. The Manhattan project ended that. Like it or not we have to deal with the new reality, not the 1945 reality.
  20. They do. But even CBC carries A fair bit of US programming. The USA is a huge and influential nation (as if you did not know). And no where else in the world is it more so than here.
  21. Exactly, they affect you very little. US policy has a much larger impact on Canada. All your major networks are on any basic cable subscription here for example. I doubt that CBC is carried anywhere in your nation. We can’t get away from it.
  22. FWIW I will gladly talk Canadian politics with you if you like. But it is unlikely that you or any other American care to.
  23. Personally I never listen to stuff like that. I'm far too impatient. Just write up the highlights for me and I'll read them the next day. No matter who or what nation.
