I do not support that particular action, but I most certainly support Israel and the Jews. And I think that's the point, at least in part. If he's not willing to answer direct questions about rather suspicious beliefs he holds, then I am left thinking either he can't answer them, for whatever reason, or he realizes his views are so far out in left field they've disappeared. Furthermore, if he is a jumper, 'twould be interesting to meet with him over a beer or two and discuss his theories more thoroughly. If he's not a jumper, why come to a skydiving website at all? Jiggy, you know what I'm going to say...brain freeze and brain disconnect happens to everyone. EVERYONE. I once was moving towards my mentor, and couldn't figure out why he wasn't stopping; I'd forgotten it was me doing the moving. Interesting news conference. And a great, stern admonition to not smear nor slander any particular community for the acts of a few. Big props to these guys who looked like they haven't slept since last week. Some intriguing comments were made, such as some things have been found in Yorkshire that posed a public hazard, but all were attenuated by the police there. Not exactly sure what this means. And that they've identified 3 men, but it's not clear if these three are alive or dead. And they identified 4 people from the surveillance tapes, and haven't identified the 4th. They may have found a van that contained many detonators, according to MSNBC (now). They're also saying that the person on the bus was a suicide bomber, and once they determined who he was, that led them to the homes they searched this morning. There is going to be a news conference at the top of the hour. And yes, I hope they have the right guy(s). A point of clarification, and a question. 1. The order was rescinded, according to the BBC's article (if I read it correctly). 2. The question I had is wouldn't it be rather dangerous, for both the service men as well as the Londoners, for them to be out in uniform? Wouldn't that give rise to another (more appropriate) argument, as in "the Brits can't handle their own security," or "we're being invaded," or "WTF is Blair doing??" And if they weren't in uniform, they'd not be noticed except as an American. Would they have been in uniform? Or not? considering the tone of your post, I think that's pretty wise. Look. Maybe I am being naive. Maybe I'm just optomistic. Maybe I'm just a fool whistling in the dark. Maybe, though, I see things a tad differently than you do. Do I think there will be more attacks? Certainly. Do I think they'll be on the level of 9/11 or greater? Perhaps. But considering what's happened since the west was galvinized into fighting terror for real rather than just a bomb or two at an aspirin factory, or turning down several chances at apprehending OBL during other administrations, I think that activities are slowing down...if not in number of attacks (although I still think it's lower), in the total killed and the effects on the western world. Do I think what happened in London sucks? Absolutely. But I also think it was smallish, compared to what could've been carried out. Same thing with Spain, although their capitulation to AQ may have brought the attacks to London. Christel, I don't expect you (of all people) to understand where I'm coming from. And for the record, I don't watch FOX exclusively; I tend to watch MSNBC and CNN, and search the 'net for items of interest for follow-up, including many liberal, conservative, and everything in between sites. I am, however, speaking specifically about AQ...who we weren't terribly scared of, according to our actions, through the 90s. They were seen as a threat, but since it hadn't materialized here in the US, it wasn't taken terribly seriously. I don't mean the US only, either. The Brits didn't get too involved in AQ, not militarily, nor did the Germans, French, Spanish, et cetera, until 9/11. It was on our soil, sure, but it was also a wake up call to the entire western world that if it could happen here, it could happen there. And we (globally) were galvanized by that attack. The fact that there hasn't been an attack on our soil - although many have been planned and attempted - since 9/11 despite AQ's clear determination to do so, to me, speaks to the efficacy of what the global efforts have yeilded. Hi, Emma No, I know it did not. But it was 9/11 which brought us (again, globally) to a position wherein we were willing to take some significant measures against terrorism, including the IRA, and other "western" groups (in funding, ease of movement, and so forth.). Thus that is what I was referring to; basically since then, rather than before (I know AQ was active in the 90's - I've been following them since the WTC '93 attack). And I do also understand the long term view, going back in history and seeing terrorist activities throughout the decades. But again, I was specifically referencing AQ and the battle against them. And I still think that we've managed to hinder them pretty well. I don't think anyone would disagree that if the hard targets were available, we'd have spectacular attacks on a regular basis. But the hard targets got harder, we got active and froze $$ and made some significant arrests, went into Afghanistan and overturned their government. AQ is no longer the big, bad, scary threat they were on 9/10, 9/11, and 9/12...that's all I'm getting at. As I said above, I'm not including AQ in Iraq. That's a whole 'nother thread, you know? But yes, I'd have to agree, they're scared...and rightly so. I went through a time where I was scared of terrorism - in the early and mid 90's. I'm not now; perhaps that's because I realize that death will come knocking whereever I am at the time; I nearly died getting out of the bath a few years ago (fell, thumped my head, and had I fallen the other way, I'd've drowned...). It's a fact of this life; death will come to us all. As you state, it is rather West centric. And perhaps that's a common failing. But I still think that the war on terror has inhibited OBL and AQ...at least for now, and at least in the manner they've been attacking. Bill, you're very clear as to what I'm talking about. It's not Iraq...even though I know you will try to skewer me for not including it. I'm referring to AQ, their declarations of jihad against us (the west, and specifically the US.). They are failing miserably in killing us in the west in enough numbers to intimidate us, frighten us, and try to control us by fear. It's just not happening...and I don't think they can, any more.
