The most cost effective places to jump.
peckerhead replied to Trae's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
"free parking"? Don't all DZ's have free parking? I can't remember ever bing charged to park at any DZ..... But hey that's a great idea! I could stand out in the parking lot on weekends with an orange vest and sell parking tickets to the whuffos. -
What age did you start skydiving?

Back in 1982 I was doing a 3 way and I was the last one going out of a c-182. I was still in the door (on my knees) when my main deployment bag went out the door and my main inflated over the tail. I had just over 100 jumps and it almost knocked me out. I cut away and dumped my 22 foot round reserve at around 10,000 feet. I was 19 years old and scarred to death! I could not figure out what had happened, I just reacted.....My main was shreaded, the plane was damaged but he was able to land. That was a long reserve ride, the uppers were cranking and I landed about 6 miles from the drop zone and was lost for some time. No roads, no help. I can't believe I still do this.....

Skydivers who don't deserve respect.
peckerhead replied to Trae's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I have been in this sport most of my natural life. I consider skydivers to be my family. Dysfunctional at times but still family. Like all families we have our problems and we don't always like each other but we still have respect because of our common bond. Now that does not mean I have not lost respect for skydivers I have known. But the reasons for that loss of respect had nothing to do with skydiving. If you don't like the way things are then DO something! It is too easy to sit behind a keyboard and cry. Way too easy dude! I am playing you because you have no ball. -

It sounds like you have a chip on your shoulder about something. That is really too bad. -

All skydivers deserve respect. Some just get more than others. -
Skydiving without shoes....
peckerhead replied to peckerhead's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
In keeping with the "jumping without" threads... AAD's, Altimeters, Goggles, etc. How many jump without foot protection? Most of my jumps have been without an AAD. I have never used an RSL except for student jumps with a Stevens line. Many jumps without an altimeter. No goggles only by mistake..... However, I have never jumped without SHOES! I like to protect my landing gear. -
New to Washington DC area, looking for dropzone!

I suggest that you use the DZ locator function on the homepage of this site. From Rockville the DZ's in Pennsylvania are closer and much easier to get to than either Delaware or Virginia. -
Skydiving without an Altimeter
peckerhead replied to dgskydive's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Does that practice explain any of the no pull fatalities common to the past? No, I am pretty sure most of the no pulls had altimeters. -
so does this guy

Guess you're 'tude would be different if he was a girl Fuckin A bubba!

Keep your nut bag to yourself. I hope you like to jump by yourself. Good luck finding a pilot. (unless he is gay)

My TiVo found it appropriate to record "Drop Zone"
peckerhead replied to grue's topic in The Bonfire
I tivo-ed Point break last night. I still think that movie brought more wuffos into the fold than all other skydiving movies combined. I remember that summer we were flooded with every 18-24 year old male that wanted to skydive. Some even brought their girlfriends to the DZ (bad idea) I don't think any other movie about skydiving had the impact that point break did as far as sparking interest to our sport. -
Friends don't let friends jump non-PD canopies? Orange again? Am I sensing a pattern?

Skydiving without an Altimeter
peckerhead replied to dgskydive's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
When I started jumping they would not let you have an altimeter until you had 25 jumps. The wisdom was not to fixate on the gadget and actually think! But, we did get a stopwatch and we learned to count. A 10 second delay was a 10 second delay. Altitude awareness seems to be a lost art. Nowadays you just wait for the "beep" -
Jumping at a DZ that requires an AAD

It IS Mt. Rainier.... And That is the Curtiss..... Game over.
-
It is very similar to the Stintson, it may even have Stintson wheel struts. But, it is still a Curtiss.

At the beginning....

"And how do I own it for so cheap?" We recorded off the satelite for free and watched it at the DZ on a rainy day. This was before it was even available for sale. It sucked so hard (for whuffos anyway) it went straight to the lifetime network. My favorite part was when Redline and whatsisname are having a chat on the tailgate with no rigs on.
