  1. This was by far the best DZ I visited in New Zealand. Most DZ's in NZ are tandem factories but these fellas made me feel right at home. The scenery is INCREDIBLE!!! Thanks again mates!
  2. Hey, to each his own. If you are brave enough to land in the plane in the dark go right ahead. I don't like landing in the plane during the day, no way would I do it at night unless there is no other choice. Another point that is being missed here....If you are losing the sun you don't have to go all the way up. You can always exit at a lower altitude and give both yourself and the pilot more light to land.
  3. I don't know about you guys but landing in the plane sounds a lot more dangerous to me. Given the choice between landing a canopy in the dark or in a cessna VFR with no runway lights on an 1800 ft. grass strip I would take my chances under canopy every time. Even with runway lights I would do the same. Landing in the plane is scary enough, but IN THE DARK? No thanks!
  4. I had two cutaways in a row on back to back loads. I made 3 more jumps that day. I guess I was too young to realize I was supposed to be freaked out.
  5. I recently traveled to Australia and New Zealand on Vacation and I jumped at 7 different DZ's. Sydney was by far the best for experienced jumpers. Large turbine aircraft and a wide open landing area. I had no trouble getting on a load from the moment I arrived. Great party, bonfire and barbeque Saturday night. The overnight facilities are not that great but Picton is only a few miles away. I stayed at the brew pub which had cheap rooms and great beer and food. Thanks for the great memories mates! Hey Ruckert! Check your email!
  6. The canopy did not hit the tail until after he cut away. If he would have cut away with an RSL the reserve would have fired into the tail.
  7. Last fall a good buddy of mine broke a mini riser on his javelin after a hard opening. Fortunately for him the side that broke was not the RSL side. I think several people at the DZ disconected their RSL's that day. About two years ago Another friend of mine had a premature opening on the step of a 182. The main got tangled up on the step and eventually the tail. Fortunately he did not have an RSL so he was able to cut away and clear the aircraft before pulling the reserve. All the other jumpers including the pilot were able to exit the doomed aircraft as well. An RSL would have likely killed this jumper and possibly everyone else on board.
  8. My first night jump was #70 It was my 12th jump on a ram-air..... My, how things have changed.... Get a good briefing, have a plan, and stick to it. And most of all have fun!
  9. I think the Bar in Lost Prairie is the only one in the county that serves hard liquor..... The breakfast bloody mary's are exceptional! Not bad for a cessna DZ that has a big party every year.
  10. Will this work on other manufacturers helmets? Has anyone tried it on a non-BH helmet?
  11. "If you were open to new ideas and checked out their advantages...you wouldn't be jumping a racer with a round reserve and a batwing." You should see what he used to jump, the batwing is a big improvement Now the racer and the round reserve is just plain weird......Sorry Brett but friends don't let friends jump racers
  12. I must be missing something here.... I just read in the classifieds that Toledo is looking for a bigger turbine, twelve place or larger. Whats up with that?
  13. Ok, now I am even more confused. The 18-55mm lens I am looking at is advertised as being compatible with ALL canon digital SLR's Will the sigma 15mm work on my D30? PS nice pics, I can only see a bit of the fish-eye distortion in the background.
  14. So... you don't get the distorted fish-eye effect? Do you have any sample pics you would be willing to share? I can get a standard zoom 18-55mm lens for much cheaper but would not mind the extra bucks if the quality is that much better.
  15. Hello all, I just bought a canon EOS 30D body and the next step is to buy a lens. Which one would you recomend? I mostly do tandem videos and occasional RW. I have been doing videos for about 3 years now but no stills (except for frame capture) I also need a remote switch. Will a conceptus switch plug directly into this camera or will I need to make modifications? I did a search and the results were somewhat confusing, Thanks in advance!
  16. Call Ralph! Best price No sales tax Great service Satisfaction guaranteed
  17. The Monarch was a piece of shit Brett and you know it. You were just too cheap to buy a new canopy I made about 5 jumps on one and it flew great but the openings were so damn hard It was not something I would ever consider buying. Back in the day when I was Ralphs test-jump dummy that was my least favorite canopy. Hey what's up with the poopsheet? I can't get on without answering a bunch of personal questions. What else do you need to know?
  18. I remember an old buddy of mine had a 2 PC rig. When I asked him why he had two pilot chutes he said..... " Because I couldn't fit 3 in there!"

  20. I will be in NZ next month (April 2005) and would like to make some skydives while I am there. I will be flying into Auckland and renting a car. Return flight is also from Auckland. I am mostly interested in the north Island and maybe the northern part of the south island. What are the best DZ's for experienced jumpers? Most of the info I found here on dz.com is about tandems only. I don't mind making solos, I mostly want to get in the air for the scenery. I may also be making a sidetrip to Sydney while I am there. My wife is going there on a business trip and I am just going along for the ride so I need dz's that are open mid-week while she is working. I can make some weekend jumps also. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. PS how is Quantas about flying with your rig?
  21. Personally I think if you are going to honor an achievement it should be a REAL pie. Not just a paper plate with whipped cream. The higher the honor the better the pie. I remember one ceremony where there was no whipped cream available so shaving cream on a paper plate was used. BUMMER! It was menthol Bar-ba-Sol and it burned the poor guys eyes so bad he could not jump the next day.....Not cool! I have also seen where they were to cheap to even buy paper plates and just held the jumper down and spewed whipped cream on his head. Geez, if you are going to do it show some class and do it right. Getting that crap on someones gear is unforgivable. I would rather just make them buy beer.
  22. I agree, of course any rig that has been stored that long should be inspected and tested before returning to use.
