  2. Georger wrote: Really? Are you sure you have the Mayfield call time right G? My recollection is that he called H after Cooper's presumed jump time, not while he was in the 727. Physics is suspended on every jump, at least it appears that way to a jumper. Freefall makes it seem like gravity has disappeared, at least for a minute or so. I've even had it happen inside the cabin when Mike Mullins decided to give us a NASA style zoom climb and pushover in his specially modified "rocketship" King Air. I was floating free, weightless, pushing myself from one side of the cabin to the other suspended in mid air. All that fun and an exit far above 20,000 ft for $48. Such a deal Has anyone heard from Farflung? Is he OK? I hope Sluggo gets to read the WSHS docs posted yesterday. He'd love that stuff. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 3. Bruce wrote: Both Bruce and Blevins have offered free copies of their books to forum readers. I commend them for their generousity. Mayfield just doesnt fit the DBC description but what a great suspect otherwise. Convicted felon, pilot, national champ skydiver, rigger, etc etc. Mayfield was apparently a very callous guy too, witness the deplorable number of deaths attributed to his unsafe DZ operations. Mayfield's "it aint me" phone call to Himmelsbach right in the midst of the crime always struck me as odd and kinda contrived. But... he just doesnt look at all like the Cooper described by witnesses. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  4. Wow! Way to go WSHS. This is more new info than we've seen in a long time here. Hopefully it will give us a temporary bickering break while this new info is examined. Thanks for posting here. 377 (proud to have loaned his Cooper twenty to the exhibit) 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  5. The Drake Group has completed an STC for parachuting and cargo delivery from Gulfstream GV and G550 aircraft. The STC, which was FAA approved this year, provides for opening the baggage door in flight and deploying jumpers as single jumpers as well as tandem jumpers. The STC also allows for opening the baggage door and delivering cargo bundles via a cargo parachute on a small static line. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 6. Maybe Janet wasn't consciously lying but rather filled in the blanks with subsequently learned facts. It happens all the time in witness descriptions of aviation accidents. It's not out of the question that Janet saw a flare tossed. Somewhere I recall reading an account in which Janet allegedly described an arcing path of descent for the flare which IS EXACTLY what you'd see. Most Whuffos would expect it to drop straight down or nearly so. Later Janet hears details about DBC and her mind fills in a false memory of seeing him standing on the stairs. I can assure you, from decades of experience watching exiting jumpers (including DC 9 jet jumpers), that she did not see this level of detail at night from a plane flying at that altitude even in a clear sky. No way. Period. End of discussion. The alleged MIB intimidation is not credible in my opinion, but that's just a personal opinion. Sheridan Peterson is an intriguing possible suspect and had ALL of the skills needed to have made the jump successfully. I agree with Bruce and Blevins however that the violent threats of Norjack seem very much out of character for Peacenik Pete. I suspect Pete still reads this forum and I'd sure like a chance to talk with him. Ever since I pointed out parallels between his book and Norjack he has written me off as a CIA FBI operative and will not answer my emails. He also pulled his book off the Internet and you can no longer purchase a copy anywhere. Odd, since previously he was doing his best to get it widely read. I will make my CB walkie talkie jump in Spring of 2014. My latest radio jump (done 2 weeks ago) was with a vacuum tube WW 2 Army walkie talkie, just to prove it could be done. This was the world's first production walkie talkie. These were used in the D day invasion. Picture attached. Hey Amazon, I know you recognize the landscape. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  7. Blevins wrote: Somewhere I recall seeing DBCs eyes described as "piercing". Might this have been an artifact of colored contact lenses? They couldn't have always been as fake looking as those you saw. The AIM infliltrator successfully passed himself off as a Native American among real Native Americans. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  8. Sheridan's eyes seem to be the wrong color for DBC. However, brown contacts were used at least as early as 1973 by FBI informants who infiltrated the American Indian Movement. Could DBC have been removing and destroying colored contact lenses during that long absence in the 727 lavatory? Might he have dropped one and had a hard time finding it? I remember seeing people looking for a long time for a dropped contact back in the 70s. Weren't they made of glass back then? If you had colored contact lenses on during the crime and all the witnesses ID'd you as having brown eyes, then you wouldn't worry about disguising anything else. If you had blue eyes you were simply not a viable suspect. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  9. Blevins wrote: More or less requested of you and you are OK with it... hmmm. Is this your way of telling us that Gayla cracked the whip? Come on Robert, show us some spine. Your continued posting will be proof. No posts= no backbone. Your call. As I get older I get gentle "suggestions" that skydiving may no longer be an age-appropriate sport. Ya gotta shut that dialog down real fast. I make sure to mention every time I see news about a climbing fatality and I censor all the skydiving accident news. She never saw the news about the eleven fatalities in Belgium the other day when their Pilatus Porter jumpship shed a wing. I tell her that Snowmman has offered to teach me nighttime ice climbing if I ever quit jumping. That usually gets things straightened out. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 10. seriously... they should warn people about that plane and have a box of earplugs by the door! What a climber though. Those R1820-86 engines in Southern Cross kicked butt. I was used to getting a half hour nap on the way to 13.5 in a fully loaded DC 3. On my first Southern Cross ride I was awakened by a cute Japanese girl who pointed at the door where folks were already starting to exit. It was way sooner than I was used to. Sleeping on a climbing jumpship? Well, it was WFFC and those wild nights were exhausting. Those who were there give me an AMEN please. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 11. Nope. Just noise. Listening for a signal Georger. The Cooper band is really dead at the moment. 73 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  12. Jumped Saturday. The fall scenery was spectacular. Opened high and did some cross country flying to take in the sights. I still marvel at the low cost of jumps. $22 to 13,500 ft in a twin turboprop acft. These hotshot swoopers just keep cutting it closer and closer. I saw some swoops last weekend that scared me. Sooo close to the edge between spectacular and tragic. My landings are dull, tame and as safe as I can make them. At least during my lamding phase I can compete for Quade's title as "the worlds most boring skydiver". Saw a young jumper wearing a DB Cooper T Shirt. Always enjoy seeing the legend picked up by the kids. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.

  14. I met Cliff at WFFC and got to do some test jumping (from the C 130 Herc) with an instrument pack that recorded high speed exit pressure fluctuations so that they could make the Cypres software even more immune to misfires. Cliff was a great guy and extremely knowledgeable about older rigs. We talked for a long time about some of the early rigs and vintage AADs such as the Sentinel. We also talked about early Vectors (eg V8) and their incompatibility with Cypres AADs due to a very narrow reserve pack tray. Seemed like he knew the details of every rig ever made. What says so much about Cliff was that he was the US service center for Cypres for many years and had NO written contract with Airtec, just an handshake and his word. If there were more guys like Cliff a lot of lawyers would be out of business. Our sport has lost an exceptional man. May he rest in peace. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 18. BK wrote Simple questions for the "official record keeper": what type of jumpship (mfr and model), who owned it and where did the jumpers land? And how do you train a Whuffo to do a nighttime jet jump with an asymmetrical payload over wilderness? The Horizontal Flight Problem

Great article. Wish someone could take your article and make some demonstrative computer animations to illustrate the issues you raised. It's hard for newer jumpers to visualize the dangers by just reading about them.
  20. Bruce wrote Great post Bruce. I honestly wish gravity were optional. Why do you think we jump? It's a wonderful illusion... for about a minute. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  21. Mr Shutter wrote The walkie talkies you had appear to have been three transistor units with regenerative receivers. They were really just toys and good for about 300 ft max. The morse code feature is the clue to their identity. The skip still happens, but the level of participation in long distance CBing is way down from the glory days. You can check here for skip propagation news. http://prop.hfradio.org/ Check out CB channel 6 when skip is hot. It's quite entertaining. Fire up your rig. The skip hasnt disappeared, but most CBers have. When the skip is good you will hear and perhaps work stations thousands of miles away as you know. Amazingly this guy stays in business despite the FCC: http://www.davemade.mobi/Mobile-Amplifiers-Click-Here-Button_c3.htm Dave makes HUMONGOUS amplifiers, including some mobile ones good for 4KW on special order. Back to Cooper... I'd sure like to talk with Sheridan Peterson. My efforts to contact him have not worked. I thought about him when I saw a TV show about early wingsuit jumpers. Didnt mention Sheridan but it should have. Maybe Cooper had a wingsuit That might explain all the trouble we are having with the flight path and Tena Bar. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 22. I hate to burst your bubble Grey...but the freefall speed record with basically normal gear is 330.21mph http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_skydiving just about anyone can go over 180 in freefall FYI hangdiver How are you doing Hangdiver? How is the lovely Ms Raz? I recorded 186 on my Altitrack trying to do head down. Note I said "trying". I was head down for a while but couldnt sustain it. Harder than it looks. The more Cooper media attention the better, so I wish GreyCop good luck with his book. Anybody know what happened to Farflung? 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 24. When I was a kid a friend of mine and I each bought a Lafayette 10 transistor single channel Superhet CB walkie talkie. They only put out 100 mw, one tenth of a watt. We never failed to communicate between his hilltop location that was line of sight to my location, a distance of about nine miles. If Cooper had a CB walkie talkie and an accomplice had a CB radio and sited himself on a high peak I'll bet they could have communicated after Coopers landing. From my limited CB experience you could always work a station in your line of sight. I get a kick out of reading about CB outlaw high power stations. The FCC still busts some, but nothing like the old days. There must be 5,000,000 CB sets gathering dust in garages and attics. If you tune the band when no skip is happening it is nearly empty. I'll bet you broke Billie Sue's precious little heart... for a good twenty minutes.
