There has been a lot of discourse here on the merits of building more prisons at the cost of more tax dollars, but why is it necessary? My opinion has always been, if we take away the recreation areas, the libraries, the tv rooms, etc etc etc, and, make the prison a PRISON and, get rid of parole and early release AND, just stack them in the cells like cord wood, the prison is no longer as "good" an option as it once was. It becomes a larger deterrent and perhaps, just perhaps, makes the would-be criminal think twice before he commits that crime. We, in the "Land of The Free" could learn a lot from the legal systems of some of the "third world" countries, and from some of the middle eastern countries. I am all for JUSTICE, but when the SOB was caught in the act, its on video, and 30 people watched it happen, why waste time on a trial? Why waste time on incarceration for a muderer? Just despense the JUSTICE. Whats so hard about that? Scott

Now everyone keep in mind, that no matter how MANY PEOPLE ACTUALLY WITNESSED THIS that the guy is NOT GUILTY, only ACCUSED. We certainly should not condemn this poor man, I mean, obviously its a case of mistaken identity, and even if its not, if the cops forgot to read him his rights or something, he DESERVES and aquittal, and certainly, under NO circumstances should we send this poor, misguided individual to prison for the rest of his life, we won't even discuss the death penalty. Oh, the horrors, that poor young man being accused of such a terrible thing. (in case anyone missed the SCATHING SARCASM here, I personally think the state should waive the trial and summarily execute the bas___d.) Now, to answer the question, I'm not sure a gun would have necessarily prevented this. It is my PERSONAL experience that it is much harder in actuality to pull the trigger than to talk about it. I'm not sure the "average" homeowner / citizen has the mentality (i'm not sure thats the right word) to actually pull the trigger when it comes down to it. Especially when it is not themselves or a close loved one who is in peril. That said, I personally believe that EVERY homeowner should keep a LOADED gun in the home. It would definitely give the scumbags in our society a reason to pause anyway. Scott

If FEMA uses tax dollars to pay the "claims" then "WE" are paying for there loss, the tax payers are provideing there insurance. Do I think the people w/ homes should be left out on the street? NO. But I do think they should have to be responsible for there CHOICE not to insure. Let FEMA help, but not GIVE the $$. Make it a loan, that they MUST repay before they are eligible to recieve help in the future. I think actually that is a VERY fair way. Be responsible for your actions, accept responsibilty for your actions, thats all I'm saying. Part of whats wrong w/ this country is that people are never responsible for there own actions, its always some one elses fault. As far as the Insurance companies going bankrupt to save $$ and not pay the claims, get real, that's the most rediculous accusation I"ve heard. Scott

Gotta agree w/ PK on this one. If you want your stuff to be covered for disaster, then insure it!! I own two Insurance agencies and I gurantee you I have coverage. Not only for the building but, for the CONTENTS, for LOST INCOME, and for BUSINESS INTERRUPTION. Why should I pay out of MY pocket to insure MY stuff and then ALSO inusure "YOUR" stuff w/ my taxes?? Insurance coverage IS available to the dropzones, and all the other small businesses out there (property coverage anyway) and if someone tells you otherwise, they don't know what they are talking about. I personally never said FEMA does not do a good job at what they do, but as far as people being unable to afford the insurance, BS. My personal OPINION is that if you can not afford the insurance, then you cannot afford the thing you purchased. Be it an automobile, a house, a mobile home, etc. Why should any one that is NOT willing to at least be PARTLY responsible for themselves be entitled to the tax $$ that ALL must pay in?? Be part of the solution, not part of the problem.

Its a generic "pot" I speak of. Sorry not to have been clear, and YES it is Federal $$. Doesnt diminish the fact that the $$ should only go to those who attempted to help themselves. Those same people are part of the reason that YOUR insurance rates are so high. Scott

Personally I think they do a fairly good job. My problem with the system is WHO it helps. I am an insurance agent here in Florida and what ticks me off is that more than half the people who get $$$ for the loss of home / property DID NOT PURCHASE VOLUNTARY COVERAGE!!! Therefore, they DID NOT CONTRIBUTE to the pot from where the $$$ comes, they are FREELOADERS!!! That said, again, I feel FEMA does a very adequate job. Scott

i know it is TOTALLT legal in Amsterdam, but i think everyone knows that. And i want to say its legal in Alaska, but i am probably wrong bout that.
