  3. I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with your comment. Since coming on DZ.com, Abedy has received a tremendous outpouring of support, respect, warmth and friendship from this community. I found what Airtwardo said nothing more than some light-hearted humor as he inserted himself into the conversation. You've known him for quite some time and know what he's done for our community, yet indirectly call him a jerk. It would appear that rather than being educational - he was given a bitch slap; not once, but twice. You know, I have spent my life being called everything from the Jolly Green Giant to Sasquatch - the list goes on and I too was "Born" this way. But, I knew the people who were saying it and that there was no harm meant. You could have done a better job of educating him about her and her about him than just taking a side. Jim - Jerk?? Far from it. One of the most kindest and giving men I've met in this sport. @Abedy. Please realize that this is new information to us and you can take this opportunity to educate us. Personally, I'm not sure of the verbal rules. I live in a city that has a very high per capita GLBIT population including my sister who is gay. I've heard those in their community refer to others directly and discuss themselves as t****y. This is the first I'm hearing anyone say that is verboten. But, I'm willing to learn about you and your expectations. I hope you're willing to learn about Airtwardo as well. 7. OK. SO here are the facts: The Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act would allow gun owners who have a concealed carry permit in their home state to bring their firearms in any other state with concealed-carry laws. In essence, that is already the case for those with reciprocity between States. But, there are SOME states that have CCW and do not have reciprocity with those other states. The bill seeks to begin the process of leveling the playing field. You imply that filling out the form is all it takes. It does not. For example, in Virginia and Florida I can take the legal portion of the class online instead of sitting in a classroom. But, it does not satisfy the practical portion. Then, one has to prove their marksmanship (which I do take some exception as the requirements are pretty minimal. Anyone who's been in the military knows what the standard is and usually have the same feelings as I do on the matter for those who've never really trained with a weapon). However, if you have been in the military and qualified on a revolver or automatic or rifle, within the past 20 years - the practical portion is waived in some states. In Florida, for example, a murder rate that was 36% above the national average when carry reform went into effect in 1987, fell by 1991 to 4% below the national average. The fact the permits are available does not mean that everyone will carry a gun. Usually only about 1% to 4% of a state's population will choose to obtain a permit. SOURCE: http://www.davekopel.com/2a/lawrev/shallissue.htm See, I can use old statistical information also. You're quoting 2007 information - that's 8 years ago now, Professor. In working with the State of Florida. Things have changed considerable No. the "folks" know they have a constitutional right to carry and if they pass a background check - why shouldn't they be allowed to? Oh yeah, there is this whole pesky 2nd Amendment thing. Quite frankly, I like sparring on here with you, but my fears are that when States go to Constitutional Carry - you may have a seizure or something... So, what I'd like to do is have you watch this timeline and to accept that you are now in the minority and perhaps its time to let it go... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitutional_Carry#mediaviewer/File:Rtc2.gif Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.
  8. OK that's two days of sumpin to do. Now, if your brother lives in BA; I lived there for many years. It's ten minutes from Tulsa and a serious number of cultural events take place each year. From sports to jazz festivals, to country music, to Rock Stars, to three performing art centers, to the ballet, to charity functions, to drag racing, to dinner theater, to the garden society, to... well, there's something, many things for everyone. There's more than just the mall; which I haven't been to in years... it's where the bubble gummers go to show off their new phones and clothes and be the cool kids. Heck, this is a list of just what the city puts on... not the private events also: https://www.cityoftulsa.org/our-city/special-events/upcoming-events.aspx Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

  13. Back in the 80's when I was in the Army, I had a Captain who drove one of these Toyota Vans: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8a/Toyota_Van_%2780s.jpg I kid you not, he dogged the damn thing. Didn't do oil changes as frequently as required, always pushing the RPMs above normal, I'm talking everything you could do wrong to a vehicle - he did it to this thing. When he PCS'd, the thing had 312K miles on it and he loaded the family up and took off. You just can't beat a Toyota engine. The S/O has an 11 year old Toyota 4Runner 200K+ miles and still running strong. Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

  15. A little boy was waiting for his mother to come out of the grocery store. As he waited, he was approached by a man who asked, "good morning young man, can you tell me where the Post Office is?" The little boy replied, "Sure! Just go straight down this street a coupla blocks and turn to your right." The man thanked the boy kindly and said, "I'm the new pastor in town. I'd like for you to come to church on Sunday...I'll show you how to get to Heaven." The little boy replied with a chuckle. "You're bullshitting me, right? ......You don't even know the way to the Post Office!” Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.
  16. Good. We agree. Let's just stop. Put it all in the US and the rest of the world be damned. First one to squawk loses.
  17. Aside from (granted) the security umbrella the US provides to the entirety of North America, the US provides next to nothing to Canada in terms of foreign aid. BTW, in contrast with the 1% of of budget the US spends on foreign aid, Canada spends about 2.5% of its budget on foreign aid. http://globalnews.ca/news/1266433/canada-cuts-aid-as-other-nations-push-assistance-to-all-time-high/ So what? So after many years of compassionately sharing a goodly chunk of its largesse with nations in need, this year Canada has looked at its books and decided to tighten its belt a bit to make sure its own citizens' needs are responsibly met. That's not stinginess, and it's not slurping at another country's trough, either. It's fiscal responsibility, and it's only fairly viewed in historical context. You're right. I failed to add any verbiage to what I was trying to communicate. When looking at it as per capita or even as a percentage of GDP, Canada has been somewhat (slightly) higher than the US in recent years. However, we have been bearing the costs of war considerably more. My point was in looking at total numbers in the graph rather than discussing percentages. Going back to my earlier post, IMO we should reduce military spending and foreign aid like Canada. On that note... Skydekker derailed the thread and I got caught up in it. I'm tired of people from other countries making Americans feel they owe the world an apology. Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

  19. Well, that's a warm & fuzzy sounding sound-byte, but consider this: The US spends about 1% of its budget on foreign aid. It spends about 20% of its budget on its military. A large part of that is not keeping American kids safe at home in their beds, but simply allowing the military-industrial complex to suck on an endless tit so the US can project power across the globe, providing a huge chunk of the security blanket for other countries. Those other countries, in turn, are thus enabled to retain enough of their own assets to provide the universal health care that every industrialized nation on Earth - with the exception of the US - provides to its citizens (for just one example). "Cutting off the welfare" and "keeping America strong" sounds really attractive around the water cooler, but in the meantime the Average Joe in America is being played for a sucker. Yeah, My point whenever someone from another country starts telling us how to use our tax dollars. They're usually on the US dole - as is Canada. To your point. True. About 3.8% of our GDP to defense as compared with 1% with most other countries except Russia and China. I'm all for a Department of Defense - not offense. If we were to combine those tax dollars from foreign aid, reduce the overseas military presence ("security blanket") by 100%, we'd probably get our military spending down to around 10% of the budget. However, every time I bring that up; I'm accused of being an Isolationist. Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

  22. I "think" AnvilBrother was attempting to make an analogy between any societal systemic "problems." Let's try this another way... One bad Zombie? A bad apple. Three bad Zombies? A few bad apples. Ten? Might be a problem. A dozen a year? Time to look for the systemic problems. Having said that, what's missing is that Police have a standard of duty and responsibility that goes above that of the average citizen. There's also numerous police who have received meritorious service medals for life-saving actions and many whom have died in the line of duty. To date... this year, there have already been 14 police who have died in the line of duty. I question if the systemic problems aren't that of self-preservation and survival. I have a brother-in-law who was a cop in a large metro area. Being Hispanic, he was put in the predominately low-income Hispanic section of town. He spent ten years in that rough part of town. After seven years, he began requesting transfers to another part of town because he knew he was getting wound up too tight before each shift. His words were, "I want to transfer for awhile where my biggest concern before shift is if I'm going to get a paper cut from writing tickets." In his tenth year, it happened. He was in a Wal-Mart in uniform on a shoplifting call in that part of town when a twelve year old Hispanic kid came around from behind the aisle with a toy gun and threw it up at him and told him to freeze. Fortunately, he saw the orange cap on the toy gun and the kid got a very deserved ass-chewing in spanish. The mother filed a complaint and filed suit. He was forced to resign. Over time and after the initial pissed off; he began to change. He became an HVAC and Electrical Technician. More relaxed, joking and most importantly; he wasn't constantly "On high alert." If we're going to look at the systemic problems; then let's look at the whole system and not segments of the whole.
