I didn't miss the point of your post at all ... in fact, we have this debate several times over the past couple of years, and if you were to search the archives, you'd see that I have gone to great lenghts to improve the image of skydiving on television. My station is perhaps one of the "skydiving friendliest" stations out there... however you seem to miss the point of my post: broadcasters have no interest in what you or anyone else thinks about skydiving. They have an interest in making money. They couldn't give a poop about the image they present of any particular sport. They want people to watch, and people who spend their days in front of a tv need drama and conflict. There is no conflict in a nice soft landing. Anyway, happy jumping. Awareness won't be any good AFTER somebody sends you flying off your bike, and your skull meets Mr. Pavement. IMHO, motorcycle helmet laws protect people from themselves. Here, even bicycle helmets are law. And in the couple of years since that law came into affect, the number of people suffereing head injuries in bike accidents has dropped dramatically. As far as skydiving helmets go, I wear one, and always will. "Men weren't meant to ride With clouds between their knees" Five For Fighting

If you're gonna be a "Missy", then some people here (not my self-respecting self, of course) might ask to see your boobies... be warned! "Men weren't meant to ride With clouds between their knees" Five For Fighting

Well here's an obscene thought ... turn the tv off! Most of what is broadcast these days is garbage, and by watching crap like that, you are just putting more money in the pockets of the already wealthy. You don't really think they are out there to portray skydiving in a manner we skydivers find appropriate, do you??? [disclaimer] I am a tv news producer and rely on viewers like you for my income -- so just watch my channel please, and no others[/disclaimer] "Men weren't meant to ride With clouds between their knees" Five For Fighting

Maybe, but this isn't about brains... operating a business has nothing to do with intelluct. And, quite frankly, few "smart" people get involved in politics -- they're too smart to get mixed up with something that grubby. Being a politician is more about manipulating people to get your own way than anything else. "Men weren't meant to ride With clouds between their knees" Five For Fighting

My DZ is similar. There is a core of people who are there frequently, a handful who show up now and then, plus the students and the tandems. I think it is a financial thing for a lot of people, too, once the realize that cost of staying with the sport. Personally, I kinda like seeing the same old faces every time I go. Now this part has me ROFLMAO. Anyway, Quade, I think you've got it covered thistime, so I'll just stay in my corner and snicker. "Men weren't meant to ride With clouds between their knees" Five For Fighting

Thanks for the details, cloudseeker2001. I think it is important we all know the circumstances of any skydiving fatality, because it makes us all more aware of how quickly fun can turn to disaster, and it lets us know what to watch out for. I had a landing a few weeks back where I didn't flare until I was almost on the ground. I just wasn't focused. Thank goodness for my big forgiving canopy, and the soft and muddy field we land in (winter is rainy season here)! Shane sounds like the sort of person who would made a great buddy. My thoughts go out to everyone who knew him. "Men weren't meant to ride With clouds between their knees" Five For Fighting

Well I'm no expert (sorry, lazerq3 ), legal that is, but I imagine even the government won't give you the legal right to sign away the legal rights of a minor. "Men weren't meant to ride With clouds between their knees" Five For Fighting

Oh yeah, baby! That sounds like LOTS of fun! How much time did ya put in? "Men weren't meant to ride With clouds between their knees" Five For Fighting

You two girls did the right thing. I don't really know 'cause I've never been a smoker, but from what I hear, it's a tough challenge. Hang in there! Your health will thank you. "Men weren't meant to ride With clouds between their knees" Five For Fighting

Dove ... I'm glad to hear your optimism. I know how much you were looking foward to the olympics and everything -- but being busted up and grounded -- I just can't imagine. I hope your recovery is speedy, and your leg is stronger than ever! Blue Ones! Frank "Men weren't meant to ride With clouds between their knees" Five For Fighting

Personally, I think students get that message without the dramatics... it seems to me that you are doing this for personal satisfaction, not for the benefit of any students... but of course, I could be wrong! Just be careful... "Men weren't meant to ride With clouds between their knees" Five For Fighting

Zennie, you have made an informed decision, and that is the best thing any of can possibly do! I will not question your choice. I know you are the type of person to fully study all the information available before making any decision. I can only defend the choice I have made -- which was also carefully considered. I just hope everyone else gives due consideration to this matter before deciding for themselves, rather than taking a "monkey see monkey do" approach. I would add that tips are, IMHO, offered to people in service industries who earn a relatively low wage. I got tipped at Christmas when I was kid delivering papers, and when I worked for a restaurant that delivered meals. The riggers who pack my reserve take pride in what they do, and recognize the importance of their job. They don't do it to earn tips. "Men weren't meant to ride With clouds between their knees" Five For Fighting

Well the why does anyone have an RSL? Too many people die cutting away without getting their reserve out -- not me! (I hope) Anyway, I'm sure people have gone looking for the silver handle when they needed it, but spent the rest of their life trying to find it because their harness shifted, or something of the sort ... I just feel a tiny bit safer knowing that I have a backup system in place that MAY help me when I need it the most! "Men weren't meant to ride With clouds between their knees" Five For Fighting

I learned pretty fast that it takes a heck of a lot to be considered an expert in this sport. At 130 jumps, I consider myself a novice, and will until I pass 200 jumps, when I'll consider myself low-level intermediate... I'm an expert at what I do for a living, as I've been involved in tv production since I was a teenager. That gives me over about 23 years of experience. But in skydiving I'm a mere baby. I, too, have seen people who are not qualifed offering guidance to newbies, and I don't really think this is right. I also have seen a national Jr. champion tell people he's no expert, so I guess it all depends on your own perspective. But I am real glad to have the ears of the experts on these forums when I have a technical question. Thanks, gals and guys!
