I hope it was insured!

Though the author asks that it not be used for political debate, this being SC, I'm sure it won't take long for it to go that route. That being said, I found this interesting: http://obsidianwings.blogs.com/obsidian_wings/2008/01/andy-olmsted.html

That's horrible. I hope you have made her aware of how bad that is for the dog? Please elaborate -- how is it bad for the dog? I'm in the same boat with my mother -- she treats her dog better than she ever treated me or my sister. I'd like to share that information with her in hope that she'll adjust the exaggerated affection and pampering (she cooks for the dog, among other things ). People who treat their dogs like humans are not in control of their pet; the pet is in control of them. Dogs are not humans and should not be treated as such. Read this, it has a lot of info. I'd pass it on to your mom, although I doubt she'll listen. People who treat their dogs like humans rarely do. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/articles/humandog.htm Relax...it was said in jest! And, Tomas, are you going to actually jump with me this season?

that was me last year - with studying for and taking the bar exam, my season did not really start til august.

Damn. That feels like a million years away.

When does the CSC season open???

Actually this isn't too bad compared to some other countries/etc. A 40 year old Cuban had the same president for about 39 years and 364 days. A 70 year old Tibetan has known but one Dalai Lama. A 28 year old Roman Catholic will have only known two Popes--especially unusual given that the papacy seems to be an old man's job. I lived in Canada to young adulthood and only knew two effective prime ministers--Trudeau and the Right Honourable Lyin Brian--with a few brief soujourns by others. Just three British sovereigns--George III, Victoria, and Elizabeth II--have accounted for more than two-thirds of the time since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It could be worse, we could be in Italy, they've had what...16 prime ministers in 17 years? And, they're about to hold another election... In 2001 (I think it was), Argentina had something like 5 presidents over a span of about 3 weeks. From the general feel of the responses, it doesn't seem to be significant that 3 of the last 4 presidents were 2-termers.

Hi all, I was listening to a sports radio show and they made a joke about a writer who didn't want to say how old he was, but that he said he won an award during the presidency of a president from a long time ago (i don't remember who it was). Anyway, it got me to thinking that for someone born in 1980 (not me, I am a couple years older than that), they would have only been alive through 4 different Presidents - Reagan, Bush Sr, Clinton, Bush Jr (and i realize that there's a lag between being elected and actually getting into office - then make it 4 prezes since '81). Though I don't know if this has any significance, it did strike me as odd that someone could be 28 years old and have seen this "lack" of variety in the White House. So I guess my point in posting is I wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts as to whether this has any deeper significance for anybody as to what it reflects about the shape of the country, politics, voting public, etc. Thoughts?

4.3 mil seems like a fair price for spending a few months in New Jersey.
-
that makes no sense to me either. i think if you're old enough to go risk your life for your country, you're old enough to enjoy a beer after you survived the fight.

Regarding alcohol, if i recall correctly, it's up to the states to regulate. The feds then told the states that, as a condition to receiving certain funds, they have to make the drinking age 21. The Supreme Ct says that this is a-ok.

Depending on how out of the loop you are, I'd recommend Batman Begins...really good.

Agreed. My only point was that when it was appeared to me that people asked what we (the US) would want or need with Cuba, I think that even if there's NO economic or other kind of "tangible" benefit to the US, it would still be better to have a government so close to us that is friendlier to the US rather than less friendly. I mean, yeah, right now there's no threat. What if China said "hey, Cuba, we'll give you craploads of money/benefits/aid to allow us to build an airbase right next to Gitmo" (and i have no idea of Cuban geography or the actual plausability of this) - wouldn't it be better for us to have a govt that would be more hesitant to take China's offer rather than less hesitant?
-
Nothing specific. I just think that having a government a short flight or boat ride away that hates us is more threatening than not. I'm not saying that they have the capacity to actually do anything or the desire to even try. However, I'd like to think that it'd be nicer to have a government over there that, if the opportunity to hurt the US in any capacity came up, would decline it rather than relish it. I don't have any actual evidence of any threat - I was speaking in hypothetical terms more than anything.
-
What do you mean "Want an island"? He said "Can we end sanctions?" not "Can we take over?". Also, while maybe they are a minimal threat at best, and economically their market is not the largest, I can't help but think that it might be advantageous to have good relations with a country that sits 90 miles from the United States as opposed to bad relations.

Well, isn't the magnetic south pole different from the geographic south pole? so you could be east of one pole given the frame of reference from the other pole.
-
I think the difference is that the type of behavior described as going on "over there" is condoned, even encouraged. Here, it's considered abhorrent, deplorable conduct that happens in spite of public opinion about it. Your point about terrible things happening everywhere is valid, but I don't think the comparison here really fits.

I wonder if the HD-DVD add-on for the 360 will be looked at in 10 years like we now look at the power glove, sega CD or 32x, etc....

Movie the-a-ters??? hehehehe. I have nothing to add to the debate, just wanted to poke a little fun. -
it seems like he's just handing off power to his brother - so it doesn't look like anything is changing.

It was Sony that invented it. The consortium that's in place now is simply to advance the standard and keep it competitive against the HD format. http://editorials.teamxbox.com/xbox/1504/The-Blue-Laser-Wars-Episode-II-Bluray-Disc/p1/ Plus, because of the PS3 Sony is largely recognized as the face of Blu-ray, and is responsible for the majority of the Blu-ray install base.

True. Humans did discover fire. So did every other species that could understand what fire is. "Discovering" means to find something that was previously unknown to you or your species - therefore for fire to be known to humans, a human had to be the first witness to it. Same way that Columbus discovered the American continents - there were animals and indigenous people here before - but to European culture, he "discovered" it because it was previously unknown to them.

I know Archway Skydiving in Vandalia, IL is open during winters...it's kind of a hike for you, but if you *reeeeeallly* need a fix....

Admittedly I did not watch the youtube video, but in the part you quoted it said 3 shots fired, 3 hit the gunman. So when did the clerk get shot at?

Seems pretty simple to me. You want to come into my property and you have a gun. I say lose the gun or don't come into my property. You come into my property anyway = you tresspassing, which is illegal.
