  1. I also feel like I have learned a lot about my gear just by packing it and feeling the results by jumping it. I know more about how it flies and the aerodynamics of the canopy by thinking about how to pack it, experimenting, and processing the results!
  2. i guess he beat me to the reply!
  3. Richard, I think you missed the fact the Chros isn't pissed that they don't pack, just that they don't know how!! He even said that they are having him pack not becuase they are helping him out or want to socialize, but because they haven't learned to pack their own shit. That is where the danger and scariness come in!
  4. I agree! I have a friend who has 60 + jumps. She is just now getting comfortable packing for herself (she still rents gear). I think that you should always pack for yourself as a newly licensed skydiver, just to gain confidence in your packing ability. It scares me that my friend got to 60 jumps with so few pack jobs!!!
  5. One cutaway... Mostly just USB... Sort of like UPB (Unidentified Party Bruises), you know, the next day you see bruises and you can't remember how you got them..... Now I just get Unidentified Skydiving Bruises. Battle scars I wear with pride!
  6. As others have said, you are doing the right thing. We have all benefited from jumping with more experienced people. You should continue to help others and have a blast doing it. People with attitudes like yours are what makes this more than a sport, more like a big family!
  7. Michele, Your writing continues to move me! You prove again and again that it IS possible to put into words what we all experience and feel. Thank you for sharing your gift with us! Anne
  8. Brian, You probably would recognize Tina- whe is the one in the yellow jumpsuit!
  9. For your feet, try wearing shoes AND socks (j/k!) Seriously, for your hands, I like Neumann's winterized Wide Receiver gloves. They are what I use during fall and spring in Illinois. They keep my hands warm, and allow for pretty good feel. Of course, any gloves will require getting use to!
  10. By the way...I am not some religious freak... I was just stuck by the moment!
  11. As I drove to the dropzone this morning, I saw the most amazing sight. I knew it was going to be a great day. As I crossed the Mississippi River (the Big Muddy River, as it is known) it appeared crystal blue, as it reflected the color of the sky. Ribbons of dark purple clouds criss-crossed the pale blue sky. Peeking through a line of bare-branched trees, the sun was a huge ball of orange, not yet bright enough to hurt the eyes. Atop one of the ribbons of clouds sat a thin sliver of a rainbow. God painted a canvas this morning, and I am humbled to have witnessed his glorious work.
  12. Michele has the right idea. I bought my copy of The Skydiver's Handbook right off the shelf of my local Barnes and Noble. Also, hang out at the dropzone. It is amazing how much I have learned just watching and listening! Good luck, and I hope to read about your first jump soon! Anne
  13. fred, check out the RSLs thread in this forum.... that is what the discussion is about....
  14. It is Basic Safety REQUIREMENTS, but under accplicibility, it reads, "Voluntary compliance with these procedures is in the best interest of both the participants and the general public." SO it is not a "law" or anything, just seriously recommended. The only "laws" are the FAA regulations
  15. My suggestion about the hands is to make sure they are really warm before you get in the plane, and wear good gloves. You will have to try a few before you find ones that you like. I use SCUBA neoprene 3mm gloves and do ok.
  16. And...Don't ask about buying beer for former firsts. Some people will say anything to get a newbie to buy beer!!!!
  17. The easiest thing for you to do is to deal with the cold and get your license. My DZ will let you jump, but will probably make you go through a mini-refresher course to prove that you know your emergency drills. I think most DZ have gear you can rent! About the beer, no you don't have to buy for former firsts, just any that occur while jumping at the new DZ ( you owe at least one case- your first jump at the new DZ!)
  18. They only fly Saturday and Sunday- they offered a free load each weekend morning. I drive past Pocohontas and Greenville every week!!! Those corn and bean fields mean lots of safe places to land if you have to land out!
  19. Viking, Please focus on one thing at a time. Either take pics or skydive. I think 12 jumps is too few to be adding a new factor into your canopy ride!! Be safe!
  20. I jump at Archway Skydiving Center in Vandalia, IL. Unfortunately they may be ending the free load until spring. Just when I started to get there early enough!!!
  21. I seem to have gotten over my need to watch at least one load land before I jump...that's good cuz I've been on the free load three times in the last two weekends!!! My only other "thing" is that I am still terrified of the peas!! When shooting accuracy, I aim for right next to the peas. I have yet to land in them!!!
  22. At my DZ, they charge 3% on CC transactions. Remember that your DZ is making almost no money off you as soon as you have your own gear and are no longer a student. That $18 lift ticket just barely covers the plane, hangar, pilot, fuel, electricity, heat, toilet paper,.... If you give 3% to MasterCard, then they lost money on your jump! Pay in cash, your DZO will love you for it!
  23. "the only appropriate burial for my current car is one of those as seen on the skydiving videos!" I don't know...we burned a car the other weekend.....kinda cool. It was still VERY hot the next morning!! The coolest paet was the tires blowing
