Crossfire 2 flight Characteristics Questions

selling on DZ.com classifieds
mattjw916 replied to stratostar's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Buyers can be equally lame too though. I can't count how many times people have asked me questions that the answers to are _in_ the ad. I mean, do skydivers have ADD so bad they can't even finish reading the ad before asking. That, and when people ask for _more_ pictures. Seriously, how many pictures of a canopy do you need? Especially when it's stock or a solid color. I've sold a ton of gear on here and always get a few silly questions with every ad I post. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080 -
Crossfire 2 flight Characteristics Questions
mattjw916 replied to aneblett's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Well you're not supposed to do it when other people are around. The best way to check if your brake lines are too short is to do a hook turn with toggles in hands and then one without. That's the only way your are _really_ going to know if you are causing tail deflection when you make front riser turns. Anything else is just guessing. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080 -
Pulling on your back is for sissies... real men dump head down for a smaller burble, you wouldn't want to have a mal or anything! NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

yeah, it's like masturbation without the payoff... ...but I have turned 15 points on a 4 way though, must be all that tunnel-flying, lol. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

When was your first Off DZ Landing
mattjw916 replied to adventurechick's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Somewhere in the 300s: Rantoul DC-3 load, I knew the spot was long, really long, but it's not like they were going to do any go-arounds. I think about 20 people didn't make it back to the DZ. I landed in a corn field (the winds totally owned me) and one of Skydive Arizona's Otters literally circled me overhead and showed me which way to walk to get out of the 7ft tall corn. I walked to the golf course (not the one next to the airport, the one in _town_, yes I was that far away!) and proceded to pack my rig near one of the greens until a course marshall came up to me and asked if I had just landed and if I was okay, with a very quizzical expression on his face, lol. I got a ride back from one of the guys at the pro-shop, it was almost a 10 minute drive back. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080 -
Zero, I have never packed a mal for myself or anyone else. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

Personally, if I had a car available I'd drive to Perris, CA and use the wind tunnel there rather than Flyaway Las Vegas. It's only a few hours away. Here's the websites for both though: http://www.flyawayindoorskydiving.com/ http://www.skydiveperris.com/tunnel.html NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

Hey slick, we're not talking about x-brace canopies so your story doesn't mean shit with regard to this thread. It's apples and oranges. The hows and whys for your friends injury have no bearing on this discussion. All you are doing is displaying _your_ ignorance since x-brace canopies and ellipticals are totally different canopies. I know MANY people that have jumped a Crossfire loaded under 1.4. _I_ have jumped other "high-performance" ellipticals under 1.4, a couple of them actually. Have you? None of them collapse as you imply and to purport that they do is utterly incorrect. Don't muddy the waters with unrelated stories. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

Both of them work exceptionally well... I'd jump with either of them without any doubt in my mind. Both of them have had "misfires" in the past but the causes have long since been addressed. TCO (total cost of ownership) of a Vigil is lower over its lifetime as reported by Skydiving magazine's review last year so if you are purely considering cost, a Vigil will cost you less money. Your best bet is not to put yourself in a situation where you _need_ an AAD to save you. Most AAD fires are caused by operator error, i.e. loss of altitude awareness, which is completely preventable. Like I said, I'd jump with either of them, personally I own a Cypres 1 since it works and I got a deal on it when I bought it. Of course, I just sent it off for it's 4 year check and put new batteries in it, so they definately are more expensive that a Vigil. Then again, Cypres is proven, reliable, technology. I'm not trying to suggest one is better than the other though, I just think they both work adequately from my perspective. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

what are the specs of your laptop? NSCR-2376, SCR-15080 -
Underloading a Crossfire 2 is not a "problem" in the same way exceeding a similar "manufacturer's recommendation" like max suspended weight. That said, as was relayed to me in discussions with several people in the know, a Crossfire 2 flies much better when loaded up vs underloaded. If you want to load lightly, jump a Safire 2 was the general consensus of opinion since it will perform better loaded under 1.4. Conversely, a Safire's performance will start to suffer as you load it higher which is when a Crossfire starts to shine. The only complaint I heard regarding "underloaded" xfires was poor openings. No modern elliptical I have ever heard of (or jumped) will "collapse" when underloaded. Some of them, a Nitron for instance, perform excellently loaded at 1.2. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

Stuttering during playback can be caused by too many open programs. Unless you have a screaming-fast laptop you are asking a lot for it to play uncompressed DV video in AVI format without any problems. Close unnecessary programs, disable antiv, defrag, etc. I know my laptop can barely play exported uncompressed DV without stuttering in WMP. Why don't you compress it with DivX, WMV9, or something? Trying to Figure Out What to Buy
mattjw916 replied to jumpjunkie2004's topic in Photography and Video
I'm already heavily invested in Nikon gear (lenses, flashes, filters, etc from long before I started skydiving) so changing systems is unrealistic for me. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080 -
Trying to Figure Out What to Buy
mattjw916 replied to jumpjunkie2004's topic in Photography and Video
Yeah, my PC1000 takes decent "snapshots"... but for anything I actually care about I'm using my Nikon F100 which will be replaced by a D70s in the near-future. The low-light performance of the PC1000 for stills is pretty weak IMHO also so unless it's just quickie stuff for the web, I'm shooting in 35mm for the time being. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080 -
anything dangerous about a sabre?
mattjw916 replied to unformed's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
And WTF would be the point of that!!? That's like buying a Buick and driving the piss out of it when you have a Corvette in the garage. Sure you can drive it at the ragged edge, but it's not as responsive and has mushy controls. I enjoy more responsive canopes with longer recovery arcs that don't require super-human strength to hold in a dive. But this thread is not about what flight characteristics _I_ look for in a canopy it was about Sabres so I digress. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080 -
A "packer" is just someone you paid to pack your rig for you. He/she may or may not be an FAA senior rigger, but he/she should be supervised by one if they are packing somone else's rig (although this is often not enforced). A "rigger" is just slang for "senior rigger" since the rigger rating no longer exists. If you want to know more about the rating check out this site: http://www.pookiebearrigging.com/ NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

Well then why don't YOU become a course instructor and raise the standards up to _your_ level then. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

Dude, he IS a USPA-rated coach. Obviously he demonstrated some level of competence and the ability communicate effectively with students or he wouldn't have the rating. I'm not a coach or a rigger and I bet I could teach someone how to pack (and I have before). If I'm not familiar with the container or how to close it properly I'd go look it up first or find someone that was. As little support I've received on the packing mat from "experienced" people over the years it's good to see new(er) jumpers support other newer ones while the rest of the "serious" skydivers are off shooting video, hauling meat, trying to pay their rent, or set some new record at something. Pissy/unsupportive attitudes drive away more new jumpers than any other single factor. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

anything dangerous about a sabre?
mattjw916 replied to unformed's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
If your balls are getting injured, you might want to check/adjust those legstraps a bit prior to exit... As for the rest of the people I know with steel balls, most of them have matching titanium parts below the waist. I've jumped canopies _older_ than a Sabre, I just have enough sense not to do it anymore. Good luck with your new canopy, I'm sure you'll have fun with it. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080 -
Packing is neither rocket science nor requires a master rigger to teach someone how to stuff some fabric in a bag... I know some "professional" packers that don't have their ticket that know more about gear and packing than some senior riggers I know. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

and when they do a cost-benefit analysis they will head to Eloy instead. Let's see cheaper tunnel time, the best coaches in the world, cheaper cost-of-living in AZ, near-flawless weather year-round, jump-till-you-drop lift capacity... um yeah I'd head to Bedford to train. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
