Indeed. Additionally, the manufacturer's stated minimum for a Samurai is 300 jumps. Further to that, the wingloading would be an issue. Particularly per Brian's own chart. The lack of an AAD and RSL would not allow the jumper in the air in Australia, and I believe that most DZs would prohibit the jumper from getting into the air under that canopy.

Add some power and release the brakes.

Existing copyright laws already did just that. Because it can be. Who? I don't recall any. Not to say they didn't exist, but I don't recall any compelling legal options from those days. These days, eMusic is doing rather well selling MP3s. I like it, though I'd prefer if they were a little quicker getting new releases on the site. No it's not. The DMCA prevents me from legally turning a DVD into an MPEG4 stream. Absolutely no argument on that front, but CSS/AACS and the DMCA do not address that problem. They just impede existing users and drive them towards illegal avenues for content. This will probably be my last post on the subject, as it's 4:45pm on a Friday afternoon here and I've got a Becks in my hand. 'Twas nice to debate with you. Have a good weekend

Funniest quote in the slashdot discussion:
-
You are correct on the limitations of US copyright "fair use" exemptions. I was confusing them with the UK rules (which have also changed since I lived there). Yup. Now try playing them back on something that can't mount a DVD image and play MPEG2, and wasn't granted a CSS licence by the DVDCCA. Agreed wholeheartedly. It shouldn't be illegal. Whether it's "de minimis" or not is not the point. The existing copyright laws made wholesale piracy illegal. The DMCA only served to criminalize users attempting to do things that they believe they have the right to do. That's an absurd generalisation.
-
For all intents and purposes DVDs are un-protected and have been since late 1999. It hasn't damaged sales one iota. It just means that a hell of a lot of people are breaking the law to do something they believe they have the right to do.
-
Option C: It's legal to make copies for your own personal use & to share with close friends ("Fair Use"). Large-scale duplication or making a profit off that duplication is illegal. Until the passage of the DMCA, this was the situation in the USA. The DMCA made it illegal to circumvent a copyright-protection mechanism, so when the DVDCCA put CSS on DVDs it became illegal to bypass it to take up your Fair Use rights. The situation reverted to Option A. Jack Valenti was one of the drivers behind the DMCA. This is why grue does not like him.
-
Incorrect. In the USA, the DMCA prohibits the reverse engineering of any DRM scheme, which means that you can't legally copy that DVD to your hard drive. DeCSS is illegal in the USA. The DMCA has trumped the Fair Use provisions of copyright law. Grue is correct in saying that to play the DVD content that he has purchased on a device other than a DVD player, he has to break the law.

The copy protection on DVDs has been cracked since October 1999. I don't see how it has harmed the adoption of the format. Do you? Large-scale duplicators are not using the same methods as the home user. Stopping grue from making a copy of his DVD has no impact on whether a Chinese plant will be able to print 2m copies of Casino Royale.
-
Home users making one or two copies was never the issue. CSS and AACS aren't about stopping piracy - they're about controlling the user experience & making people pay multiple times for the same content. Why can't I legally watch a DVD on Linux? Why do I have to sit through a minute of ads on a DVD I paid for? Why can't I legally put the DVD I own onto a hard drive and use my home media centre to watch it without having to get up and find a DVD that's been scratched silly and smeared with jam by the kids? CSS and AACS are no problem for people duplicating by the million. All you have to do is duplicate the entire disk, bit for bit, and who cares if it contains copy protection. It simply doesn't matter. I have sympathy for those looking to make careers in media, but not enough to put up with the luddite tendencies of the DVDCCA, the MPAA, and the RIAA. edit: A better explanation of this.

Update from B Burke re: SDAZ landing policy
bob.dino replied to billvon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
At my DZ I'd estimate that 50% of those with over 500 jumps are doing at least a 90. Many of the most experienced are doing 270s. Note: we have separate student and intermediate ( -
Search is one of the most useful parts of this site, and it stops the forums being blizzarded under the weight of the same questions, over and over.

So I had an interesting thought regarding international airline travel.

I'm never ever listening to you bitch about the cost of an AAD eating in to your jumping money. Buy one seat and 200 jump tickets instead. -

Naked Skydiving Organization ??
bob.dino replied to SansSuit's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You should PM LukeOliver. He has a naked C-licence... the man really likes to go without a jumpsuit! -
Are you deliberately missing his point? He's talking about the overcoming of desire. For example: I make pretty decent money, but when I see a shiny BMW M3, I go "Hey I want one of those! Oh, I can't afford one right now. Damn." And suddenly, I'm less happy. If, however, I'm able to rise above and simply not desire the M3, I'm not pissed off by the fact that I don't have AUD 150k in spare change lying around at the moment.

I've got a copy of Applied Cryptography on my desk, but I've got signature display turned off. Makes this site much easier on the eye...

What should i look for in a crew rig???
bob.dino replied to C.McKinley's topic in Canopy Relative Work
They only land like shit if you don't know how to fly them. At the recent Australian nationals, Michael Vaughan and Robbie McMillan (both on the Australian swoop team) were doing synchronised 270s into switchblades (finishing with both toggles in one hand). Very cool to watch. -
Outside camera is all but extinct in Australia, so your options are limited to tandem or tandem. Tandem masters in Australia need a minimum of 500 jumps before acquiring their rating, though many DZs impose stricter requirements. Why not get started on those jumps and see if you even like the sport before you think about making a living from chucking drogues? It is possible, but I know very few full-timers that, for example, own a house.
