    best week ever

Today is Friday and I've just spent two hours in the pub at lunchtime 'coz we had a power surge that fritzed the aircon.
  2. Getting visas for the USA is remarkably hard. I can get a visa for almost any country in the world much more easily than I can get one for the USA. The INS seems to have a default "guilty until proven innocent" mentality. I can understand some of the reasons - the USA is a very very popular place for immigrants, and because the people applying are not citizens the INS isn't accountable to them. Does your brother have $100k? Last time I checked, if his wife is willing to invest $100k in US government securities, she can have a visa, very few questions asked. in a new commercial enterprise, the visa becomes quite easy to get.
  3. Me. Only got on in the last couple of weeks. 'Tis great - I've been able to catch up with a bunch of friends from London & Ireland. Much easier than group emails...
  4. I missed the bit where it said the student had wings - maybe it's just the TM that does?
  5. If you control the server, yes it is. Conceptually, modifying the hosts file is exactly the same as modifying the results that a DNS server returns to you. ...and it's just as much work as training any other protection mechanism.
  6. Predictive text is lovely. Turn it on.
  7. Texting is asynchronous - I don't need to demand your attention right this second. You can read the message when you get to it. And, unlike email or IM, it works whether you're at the pub/at the dz/walking the dog.
  8. Ummm, maybe a new XL for the price of two 2nd hand caravans? At least in the US... It's been a couple of years since I looked at prices and the USD has nosedived versus pretty much every other currency (including the NZD), so you may well be right. I should've checked before spouting old data. Sorry .
  9. Nicely done. 'Tis obvious once you point it out...
  10. From memory, so some may be wrong: Cameron Rolfe - Velocity Shea Convery Kaz Sheekey - Velocity Michael Vaughan - JVX Cameron Jarrett - Velocity Rob McMillan - JVX George Attard - JVX Matt Harris Roger Mulckey Gary Nemirovsky - JVX Drew Lipinski - Velocity Alan Moss
  11. Possibly a sinus headache? Try taking a sudafed in the morning before jumping and seeing if that has an effect.
  12. There's a thread in errors and bug reports where an adbrite URL is triggering a spyware warning.
  13. Multiply kg by 2.2 to get lbs. Or just use google.
  14. I've seen quite a few Sabre150s loaded about 1.3-1.4, so I'd be very surprised if you had issues with it blowing up.
  15. There was a thread in Skydiving History & Trivia about the origins of the term...
  16. I'd look at the 750XL and compare that to the std Caravan. From where I'm sitting they seem to be direct competitors. Similar capacities, engines, etc. You can get a new XL for the price of a 2nd hand Caravan. The Caravan has a nicer door for 4/8-way, a higher tail, and a high wing. It's easier to stall an XL. Tandem masters seem to love the XL for exits.
  17. Lower capacity. 21 for a -100 or -200 series Twin Otter vs 15 for a std Caravan. CofG. You can take a linked 16-way out of an Otter with at least 8+camera outside. You can't do that out of a Caravan as far as I know. Toughness. A canopy over the tail will destroy a Caravan. Otters seem to be able to survive. That said, fortunately there's not a huge amount of data on this. The Caravan has advantages too, of course. Currently in Australia I can think of 4 (or maybe 5?) Caravans flying jumpers. Three 750XLs, one Skyvan, one Turbine Beaver, and one Cresco (smaller version of the 750XL). The only Otter got sold - it made little financial sense to operate it instead of the XL that the operator also has.
  18. I dare say I would be one of the more scrupulous people on here Yeah, but you gnaw on electrical cables. The threat of electrocution is ever-present around you... and that's dangerous.
  19. It was done at Moruya in Feb 2005, though it was another jump (maybe at the Farm?) that made it to the ASM cover. Three linked two-way pins with hangers between. Break, 360, dock. Several stingers playing around too.
  20. Yes you are. The same factors that affect the recovery arc affect how & when you can maintain level flight on a canopy.
  21. If you want someone in a similar time-zone, I'm sure Dave Benson in Queensland or Craig Trimble in Victoria could help out...
  22. That's what you get for having a very weak currency at the moment. Last time I was in the States the AUD USD exchange rate was about 0.70. Now it's about to touch 0.90. That means that your helmet has gotten about 20% more expensive in the last couple of years. Something similar would apply to the FF2 as it's made in the UK.
  23. Go for it. Worst case: you'll learn something about yourself.
  24. Sounds like a fun change of direction. Hope it works out well for you.
  25. If, by RW, you mean "fall in the same vicinity as some other people" or "be in the base on big-ways", then you've got a chance if you get a very baggy jumpsuit with swoop cords. If, however, you want to turn points or compete, the jumpsuit and the body position you'll have to adopt to stay with people will make losing the weight a hell of a lot easier than the alternative. And you'll probably live longer. A fairly standard fall-rate for RW is 115-125mph.
