Ha! That's hilarious I also got bombed on the shirt while leaning over a putt for par in a golf tournament once. That was pretty funny too. My playin partners and I laughed it up, and then fortunately I sank the putt. I'm like a fun target for them or something. Come to think of it, if I were a bird I'd have a blast playin that game. _______________________ aerialkinetics.com

So, has this happened to anyone else or is just me? I was mindin my own at a stop light yesterday morning singin along to the radio, windows down in my truck. When all of a sudden, a big plop lands on my left leg. I screamed briefly, I mean what the hell...? I realize a bird had done a flyby (left to right pattern) and nailed his shit missle perfectly on my lap. After laughin and cleanin that shit up, I put my left hand back on the steering wheel and wouldn't ya know, big line of white gooey residue. Yes my friends, more bird poo. Had to go the whole day with a big crap stain (half brown/half white) on my jeans, I just said I was startin my own trend. _______________________ aerialkinetics.com

I'm beginning to think that about all birds. Little shits. _______________________ aerialkinetics.com -
I've seen this but its always been due to a left to right wind dragging the pilot chute, not due to a hard pitch. Not saying it can't happen however. _______________________ aerialkinetics.com

I don't think we disagree... I noted that the throw wasn't anything 'eccentric' as I have seen someone pitch super hard and disorient their body position. A 'soft' baseball throw or football pitch isn't advocating a massive windup. Thanks for asking and good input. Zennie: What he said. Tom: Hey Tom, good point! Yes I've seen my throwout (and bridle stretch) from the top view plenty of times and no rotations, but you bring up a very good case. Sometimes its difficult to describe a motion online without little picture references I think really, the idea I was trying to present was the reference to release the grip at arm extension. We all have experience throwing balls around, so hence the comparison. But yeah, weird wrist rotations or funky flings can promote oscillation. _______________________ aerialkinetics.com

If you've ever seen a quarterback pitch a football, this is how I envision throwing a pilot chute. Nothing eccentric, but following this motion is a good visual. I've thrown lazily more than a few times while skydiving, but this has never bothered me. Obviously when it comes to BASE and dancing with altitude, I'm sure we're all a little more aware and careful regarding the 'throw.' I don't think there's ever been a stowed jump where I haven't reached back at least 2 or 3 times and done practice pulls. Engrain that muscle memory, but never become careless with it. Again, like throwing a baseball or pitching a football, I always focus on releasing the handle and 'flinging' it out there at the point of full arm extension. This all probably sounds very obvious, but I suppose counting on doing the simple tasks correctly is what keeps us alive. _______________________ aerialkinetics.com

The more I read this thread, the more I believe it was PC packing error + some weird cosmic force (whether weak pitch or burble). Of course, its all speculation and we may never be quite sure. This is a good eye-opener for me and the people I'm surrounded by in BASE. Its a reminder to never be complacent in anything, this sport is not merciful. I'm glad you're ok Jaap, and I really enjoy reading your posts here. Love your attitude man, look forward to meeting you... now that I've survived a machine gun crazed farmer and you've survived a near smack in the water, hopefully we've dodged the reaper till we get to say hello _______________________ aerialkinetics.com

LOL, you guys are making me actually want to do this. I said if the entire otter load was naked on my 100th I'd do it, there was even a sign up sheet. We had 13 folks willing to party in a birthday suit, but I caved in, not a full load... too bad so sad Lingerie and bikini loads were enough fun for me. My bf at the time (RIP) had just done his and the vid is classic, he's greeted with pies and video as soon as he lands, with his best friend's audio saying loudly and camera pointing to the 'spot' "Damn I never knew it was that small man!" _______________________ aerialkinetics.com

Now as the Cabo trip does sound exotic and I would have zero complaints, a new Phoenix fly suit along with a Norway trip with a private helicopter can be much more romantic After all, if my man cared about me he would be concerned about me separating the maximum distance away from the walls. Otherwise, our love could be severed like me if I can't track away from the cliffs properly.

Like its been said, depends on your delay/jump height/object (at times). 50' is pretty damn low, I think I'd be giving a 'mom' lecture at that point to the low puller. Major generalizations going on here, but from a terminal jump (say 1800') most jumpers will take a 10-11 second delay leaving them open at 450 feet, give or take 150. On a slider down jump (low altitude, 3 seconds or less delay) it varies greatly. It is what it is... take the jump height, use a freefall time chart, then we'll guesstimate 110-140 feet for opening, and thats the parachute time you've got to play with. Also its dependent on whether the jumper goes stowed or handheld with the pilot chute. Stowed can cost a fairly significant altitude loss, I'm guessing 50 ft at the least, its delay dependent as well.

Thats good, but many times not the case. I had 800 skydives, a riggers ticket, and not many locals keen on mentoring (understandable though, I'm not faulting anyone). Same situation with douggie. We wiggled our way in by jumping together, and I'd just show up on your doorstep when ya'll were heading out... you couldn't just leave a poor girl behind I'm not supporting the original poster's approach method. But sometimes if you really want something, you have to do it yourself. Edit to add: By the way, now we have far superior ways to approach BASE. For example, Tom's hospitality in hosting a FJC. If I knew then what I know now, I most certainly would have utilized his services. _______________________ aerialkinetics.com
