:6:2 First time out of a caravan, first time at 7 hills. 5 silly ass sorta-freefly tumblef*** jumps with Jeremy, and a sunset x-c, with a spot-on peas landing which earned me a beer. That doesn't make sense. If the brake lines are too long you can't finish your flare. If they're too short your flare should happen too soon when you try to flare. Or are you saying that you physically couldn't straighten your arms because the the lines were too short? Lines that short seem like a recipe for unexpected stalls. I'm no rigger, but this doesn't make sense to me... please explain... SD Chicago 4th of July weekend
Dougiefresh replied to kansasskydiver's topic in Events & Places to Jump
Yeah, three times a year. Fall, spring, and summer. The fall one is usually the biggest (last fall we had 150!) because of all the freshmen flush with cash from their summer jobs. Summer is generally the smallest cuz everyone leaves town. We bring 'em down, toss 'em out, then feed 'em and get 'em drunk. I don't recall anyone ever complaining... Sounds to me like you made some good decisions that kept you from being hurt worse. From your description you did a good PLF (parachute landing fall) and walked away. I had a few landings like that too, and I'd guess a lot of students do. Keep at it and don't get down on yourself. It gets easier and you'll be doing those cool tippy toe stand up landings in no time.

This is a bit morbid, but I'm working on my will and want my ashes to be scattered in an ash dive. Do I have to designate someone to organize the dive, do friends learn about someone passing and just do it themselves? I've never been involved with something like this and a forum search didn't turn up much. Thanks. We're doing the Madcity Leapfest thing on the second, too! If you've never been to a Leapfest, it is not to be missed. We have a good time, as long as you think beer, babes, and burgers is a good time. So put me on the list with 25 friends. Yeah, the door IS rather scary. But think about it this way: what's the worst that could happen? You could fall out. Ah, shit, another skydive. I prefer the term "moat." LOL!!! That was awesome. Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. --Douglas Adams

The only time I don't wear a helmet or jumpsuit is on cross-countries. There's something about the feel of the wind in your hair at 10k as you watch the sunset... Sabre 135 w/ 25 jumps ~ 1.4 WL
Dougiefresh replied to Kimblair13's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Tell him to be careful, and express your concern. If he doesn't want to hear the message he won't. I've got a buddy who did the same thing (sabre2 190 to stiletto 135 in 5 jumps); luckily he's lived to the point where he's actually somewhat ready for the canopy he's jumping. But he's the exception, I think. I spent the weekend at CSC competing in a 4-way meet. The staff went above and beyond to make us comfortable and welcome us. My team received top-notch coaching free despite the coach having to work tandems. Manifest was efficient and did well -- the T.V. screen showing the load manifest is a nice touch. The only downside I could find was the airport traffic -- there are gliders taking off and landing, and you need to cross the runway after landing. Not a big issue if you're aware, but the traffic made me a bit uneasy. All in all this is a great dropzone, and one I will revisit soon.

I managed to talk myself into being on a dream load yesterday: 16 awesome freefly babes, my jump buddy, and me. manohmanohman. life is good. And these ladies can FLY! Apparently they came close to matching the current record of 16 late yesterday, and will likely break it today. And this is just practice still! You'd think there would be some egos and wow-i'm-so-hot-shit-look-at-me-make-a-record stuff going on, but I haven't seen it. These women are just the best -- super nice and friendly, and not dud in the lot. Unfortunately, you won't see me this weekend. My grandparents are sick so I'm going to help take care of them. Besides, I have to move out of my apartment...so probably no jumping for me until Wed. And job-wise, I'm looking at semiconductor companies, thin film research, silicon micromachining, stuff like that. It should pay well, but I'm more interested in skydiving than work right now anyway. I'm going to be a bum for a while, I figure I earned that right. Well, right now it comes with the freedom to jump all summer. And I intend to use that freedom to its fullest. Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. --Douglas Adams

Thanks. It's still sinking in. I'll probably go crazy in a couple of hours, but for now I just feel kinda strange. Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. --Douglas Adams

Hmmm... 5 minutes ago I was just another guy. Now I'm a Master of Materials Science. It's amazing. It all comes down to three signatures on a piece of paper. I sacrificed a 3+ year relationship, financial stability and my mental health, and in the end I still have no freakin' clue. Fuck it, Dude. Let's go jump.
