What's wrong with being <Country of parental/your origin>-American?
GTAVercetti replied to Newbie's topic in Speakers Corner
I think it certainly started that way. People labeled themselves to give distinction. However, I think nowadays it is REQUIRED by SOME that if you are part of their group, you should label yourself as such. And if you don't? Well, you better turn in your card. Absolutely. Differences ARE good. But we can celebrate those differences without labels. When you label someone a certain way, it just makes it harder for them to change, for good or bad. How many times have we seen that when one person who is identified as part of a heritage group and given that label be held to the beliefs of that ENTIRE group? Here is the response from Dan Savage in his weekly column at Onion.com. The topic this week is STDs, particularly HPV which can cause cervical cancer in women.: Oh, and while we're on the subject of HPV... Researchers have been hard at work on two vaccines for HPV, vaccines that could save thousands of women's lives. In clinical trials, the vaccines have prevented 90 percent of new HPV infections. Good news, huh? Not for the religious right. Bridget Maher of the Family Research Council told New Scientist magazine that "giving the HPV vaccine to young women could be potentially harmful, because they may see it as a license to engage in premarital sex." While the religious right's war on gay people gets all the headlines, their war on straight rights gains ground daily. They've destroyed sex education in this country, undermined abortion rights, and successfully prevented emergency contraception from being made available over the counter. Now they're going to block the HPV vaccine. Why? Because the American Taliban would rather see sexually active women dead than vaccinated. Hello, straight people? If you don't want to live in a world where you need a license from the likes of Bridget Maher to have sex, premarital or otherwise, you had better start speaking up. Most of you seem content to merely rubberneck while gay people have the shit kicked out of us, and while that's maddening, I suppose it's understandable. It's not your fight. But what explains your passivity when your own rights are being attacked? ---- Denying vaccines? That is completely fucking retarded. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. GTAVercetti replied to Newbie's topic in Speakers Corner
My general problem with it is that SOME people (not all, but some) who use these terms give off the air that they are MORE than American. Countless times I have run into someone who defines themself differently because they are "Irish-American" or "Italian-American". To me, it is just another way to separate and divide people. All it does is serve to point out that you (the generel you) and I are different. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing. -
Large or small rubber bands for packing
GTAVercetti replied to wstcoaster07's topic in Gear and Rigging
I agree that you should bring the grommet to the band and not the other way aroudn but... I use my pull up cord to REMOVE broken bands because it is so abrasive. I can cut through one in about 5 seconds. I really would not recommend using it to pull rubberbands. I hope you are not being serious. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. No prosecution for colonel on Abu Ghraib abuse
GTAVercetti replied to Darius11's topic in Speakers Corner
No, but I think he told you WHY he was not giving an opinion....which you are proving to be true. Sheesh. People get hassled for the opinions they give and then they get hassled for the opinions they don't. The way I see it: He posted an article of interest that he thought might spark some conversation. That's it. The way I see it: if you find something interesting enough that you want people to talk about it, you ought to have the courage to voice your own opinion on the subject, and stand up for it. Yes, no one should ever post any news story ever if they don't want to debate about it. After all, information without debate is worthless. And then, if they decide not to say anything, we should keep hounding them until they do or we can show that they are stupid. That sounds great. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Does your online persona reflect who you really are?
GTAVercetti replied to Luna's topic in The Bonfire
Wow, I am totally the same way. Except people think I am 'bitchy or stuck up' People who know me will probably laugh, but I am really kind of shy until I get to know someone. I think this might be somewhat common! I'm the same way. I'm painfully shy at first and have a really hard time with small talk and getting to know you stuff. People that I've known for years make fun of me because they remember how I was at parties and stuff before I started skydiving. I would hide in the corner and then sneak out when no one was looking. Skydiving sort of opened me up a lot though. I'm still horribly shy when I go to a dropzone where I don't know anyone. Okay, here is what we do: If I meet any of you, we skip the small talk and go right to acting like our wierd (at least in my case) selves. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. No prosecution for colonel on Abu Ghraib abuse
GTAVercetti replied to Darius11's topic in Speakers Corner
Because there has to a be a point where someone says, "Hey, that is wrong." People can say it is because Bush is president, but I don't think so. The actions of the people in Abu Ghraib were not proper, under any president. I think the fact that it is a big deal is the pictures. If they did not exist, it would have been written off. I would say that three things bad happening on Friday the 13th is a pretty good record for the days total existence.

So. When one side stops, then everyone should? Application of the the Geneva convention does not require pairs of participants. Terrorists use suicide bombers to kill everyone...women, children, etc. Since they do that, why shouldn't we just start bombing indiscriminantly instead of TRYING to take out valid opposition targets. I mean, they don't care, so why should we? That train of thought leads only to derailment. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing. -

Sounds alot like me. and ladyskydiver - I like hugs. I do not shy away from hugs. Bring on the hugs. -
I used to smoke a pack or more a day till about 3 years ago. Then I quit for 7 months cold turkey. Felt like smoking again, so I did when drinking. Picked it back up but only smoked about a pack a week. Quit for 5 months. Started again and then quit again for about 4 months. Wash rinse repeat. Now adays, I still smoke, mostly when drinking but I do not usually smoke more than 2 cigarettes during the week, if that. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

GTAVercetti replied to Luna's topic in The Bonfire
I though I would bump this back up after recent posts and so I could put my 2 cents in. I think that my online attitude is totally true to the core of who I am. I make fun of people in jest, I tend to take the middle road in debates, and I don't take things to seriously. However, in real life, I have often been called "cold" or "unfriendly" until people get to know me. Numerous people at my DZ have said that it took some time to warm up to me. In actuality, I am do not do this on purpose. Instead, what they percieve as arrogance or coldness is me being shy. I suck at small talk and in fact, I really do not like it. It just takes alot of time for me to warm up to new people. So I can see how someone sees this as me being unfriendly. In opposition, I have been on DZ.com for a very short period of time and yet I have a good deal of posts. So, my online persona lets me cut past awkward small talk and behave the way I want: like a jackass. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing. -
dear god. The better I get at just not sucking completely, the faster the people above me get better at being totally fucking amazing. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

I give 10 points for using confabulate in a sentence. But I take away 10 points for using unsensable. So in the end, I award you no points, and may god have mercy on your soul. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing. -
does it really matter? hes only asking about a magazine OF COURSE! Anytime anyone asks a question about anything at anytime, no matter how innocuous, we MUST question the validity of their statement if they neglect to fill out a profile. Seriously. Not everyone who comes here realizes that they have to fill out a profile right away. Its not like he was asking whether it is safe to buy a velocity with 5 jumps. I think we can assume this post is not troll behavior. Although, magazines and manuals CAN give nasty papercuts to the untrained. Or perhaps he was trying to spark a paper vs paperless society debate. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

You can say that about the Secretary of State, right? And she is younger than me. I admit I never would have dreamed of saying that to Madeline Albright... Well, I was not referring to calling her girl. More the idea that you (or anyone) would still use the phrase "you go girl." Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.
