debate: social responsibility of businesses
GTAVercetti replied to GTAVercetti's topic in Speakers Corner
Read the debate. And please do not try to tell me Whole Foods does not make a lot of money. Interesting note from the debate: Rodgers', who maintains the "all profit, maximize it for shareholders" mantra, company has a retained negative earning of 408 million dollars. Yet, he says that HIS business practice is the better one. I really don't care if a company gives to charity or not. It can even have the effect (as mackey and Friedman say) of getting you more profit. But to say that they should not simply because they are a business is black and white thought. And that is not how I roll. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing. -
debate: social responsibility of businesses

I have not finished reading yet, but I leaning toward Rodgers. That is not to say I think Mackey is totally wrong either. Obviously he can't be. Whole Foods does quite well. But Rodger idea of getting his employees to donate seems to be quite a good one to me. I tend to lean towards the idea that a business better serves the community by following rules and making profit for its investors. sounds very reasonable to me. would like to read if I can ever get through this mound of paperwork on my desk... thanks for the link. Okay, finished. I think I side with Mackey more than Rodgers now Rodgers comes off as a arrogant jerk who instead of focusing on what Mackey said, just spouted "YOU ARE A COMMIE!!!" Mackey has a vision of company and I respect it. It is to make a highly profitable business that helps people. Perhaps he is not maximizing the profits fully because of charity, but I cannot say that Whole Foods is not making good profit. So to sum up my thoughts: A company that is highly successful will not hurt society by giving to charity. Does it need to? I say no, because giving to back to investors is the alternative. But if they can find a good line of where profits and dividends and such are still high, and investors are happy, then I have no problem with charity even if I think it is NOT REQUIRED. I think it can be a very happy medium. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing. -

debate: social responsibility of businesses

If you have the time, check this debate out. It is long though but HIGHLY interesting: http://www.reason.com/0510/fe.mf.rethinking.shtml The debaters are Milton Friedman, Whole Foods’ John Mackey, and Cypress Semiconductor’s T.J. Rodgers. Friedman is the man who wrote an article called, "The Social Responsibility of Business Is to Increase Its Profits." Mackey argues the counterpoint of giving to charity AND making profit. And T.J Rodgers responds back along with Mackey Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing. -
In the same vein: It is hard to believe that Louisiana actually expects to get some $250 billion in federal aid, including a whopping $40 billion for the Army Corps of Engineers to make plots of land dry that by rights should be under water. For perspective, the entire Corps budget for 2005 is just $4 billion. Louisiana lawmakers propose nothing less than a total terraforming of the state with the other 49 states footing the bill. If followed through to its logical conclusion, this lavish rebuilding effort would make Katrina the greatest thing to ever happen to the state of Louisiana. This plan deserves a quick and merciful death, but given trends in spending from both the White House and Republicans in Congress that may be far too much to ask for. DeLay Is Charged With Criminal Conspiracy in Texas

I hope there are monkeys!!! -
This is good to know and helps us understand why it's maybe not such a bad thing. thanks for a constructive point rather than the typical rant. And besides, I am sure the smart oil companies will be all over it anyway. BP owns and sells lots of solar already, so I am sure they will get in this market if it grows. Well I am safe in the knowledge that I am not a member of the Republican party. Nor the Democratic party for that matter

I love keystone and my old roommate (from colorado) gives it his endorsement too. And not too far is A-Basin, which is a place I always wanted to try. I know that when I was at Keystone and going off the bowls into the woods, we were in there for at least an hour without running into people. It was nice. I don't know about price for lodging though. We got a nice hook up from a friend. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

Lettor the Editor I read today ( I did not see the photo in question -- but I am guessing the photo dealt with a republican slant since it is in juxaposition to Cindy Sheehan in the letter): If one thing is clear from the letters regarding the cover photo on Monday, it is that neither side is going tobe happy with media coverage unless their own, and only their own, views get shown. Why are we supposed to have sympathy for Cindy Sheehan and her loss, but not Monday's crying mother and her loss? The conservatives don't like it when their pro-Iraq war or pro-Bush views are questioned, either. It seems each side is terrified that the other's viewpoint may be seen as legitimate, or even having a legitimate point or two. It's about keeping the other side and their views from coming out in any way but they "should" be seen, makiong them appear on the fringes of culture and isolating them from any positive press. It's about power plays and image and self-righteousness. It is what keeps this country from truly discussing ideas, prevents citizens from listening to each other and bars the various parts of the community from accepting differences of opinion. That is truly sad. - Lisa Pugh ------------------------------- I agree. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

Not suprised. This is just the latest and still disappointing. And regardless, I think it is important to point out no matter WHO does it. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

Funny, I remember people getting all over GHWB about that "Read my lips" stuff YEARS after he said it. It may be what they do, but that does not mean we should accept it. A lie could have been completely avoided if they would have just left it at "Because of the disaster, we should conserve" instead of making shit up. Cuervo Nation here I come. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.
-
Yeah me too. But seriously, do you not find it bad that Bush's press secretaries ( the men who represent the president to the press and therefore the Nation on many occasions) totally contradicted themselves? It takes a national disaster for Bush to change his tune. I find that appalling. It would be one thing if they just said that because of this we must conserve. I could accept that. But to claim that was your plan from DAY ONE? That is just an outright lie. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

Yup, sad was definitely closer to how I felt when I read this thread. And yet, you are still here. What does that say about you? Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

You can suck it. And I am more interested in the IDEA behind the quote than the humorous nature of it. Like I said, the hilarious in the title is ironic. And irony is often more sad than funny. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

Apparently I was not the only one no find the irony in this. The Daily Show noticed the same thing. And then they run a clip of Scott McClellan saying (paraphrase) "The president has outlined plans to help our nation conserve better and depend on oil less. Conservation of energy has been a TOP priority from day one" Which of course led to then rolling a clip of Ari Fleisher in 2001 fielding a question (paraphrase): "Do you think that with the per capita energy consumption of Americans being the highest in the world, we should have a plan to learn to conserve?" His answer? "No. Absolutely not. The president feels that is the American way of life" bleh Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

I agree pretty in total. Except, I am pretty unhappy with Bush already. But if he picks poorly, the need to create spin is unnecessary. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

Which is all the more reason MS should ACTUALLY TRY to break their product before release. If their target is Joe Sixpack who understand little about security and even less about viruses, then the product should be designed to protect him. It should not be released and then followed by 4,345,665 security updates because they did not bother to do it right the first time. There should be beta after beta after beta to test. And then some more testing. They should HIRE hackers to write software to exploit...all before release. The more complex a piece of softwarem the more testing it should have before its release.
