  2. I went as the antithesis of myself. I'm normally wearing overalls, airwalks and a pony tail, so it was kinda fun to dress up as a girly girl for one night. It freaked my boyfriend out a bit. Here is a link to the picture, I'm the one in the blue skirt. http://share.shutterfly.com/action/slideshow?a=67b0de21b332e6fd65f8&auto=0&idx=33&m=1&d=1130785424281 My boyfriend also went as the antithesis of himself, a CEO.. heres a picture of that, and a normal picture of what we usually look like. (Otherwise, you won't understand how much of a costume this was for both of us.) -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  3. I voted Gym 4 or more times a week. Skydiving was one of the things that actually motivated me to lose weight and get in shape. head-down was getting really frustrated when I was sinking out on everyone. Now I've got great range, and stronger arms help with my head-down too. Now that I'm in decent shape I'm finding I've got interests in some other activities like hiking and back-packing. -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  4. #1 Spatula.. obviously. #2 Rubber Spatula.. although my mom always called it a "child cheater" when I was growing up, (Since you don't get to lick the bowl.) I thought that was its name for years!! -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  5. I've seen a video compilation of BASE fatalities and a few videos of skydiving fatalities. It definitely makes you think hard about what you're doing. Partially because of the video, I decided BASE wasn't for me. I react well under pressure, but not as well as I would need to for BASE. Sometimes seeing a fatality makes a person question whether they really want to be skydiving or BASE jumping. If seeing a video makes them realize that sooner, is that a good thing? -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  6. I guess I'm just old-fashioned, being the "bad-girl" isn't really something that gets me going. And women don't have a prostate. -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  7. Some friends told me the other week that I should run for mayor and they would vote for me. I thought it was especially funny since we don't even live in the same county. Someone also once told me they liked the way I talked.. I don't know where that one came from. Personally, I think I usually sound somewhat confused. -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  8. I only drink shower water when I am reallllyyy hung over. I also brush my teeth in the shower when I am really hung over. Usually I spend like half an hour in the shower when I'm really hungover. -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  9. I guess I could qualify that... Ever since I went to the dentist I'm a flossing fiend! But what am I going to do now that I have to ride the bus? Get even funnier looks I guess.. I'll be the chick that flosses on the bus. -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  10. Water-toothpaste-water-brush-add more water-brush-add more water, repeat until spit runs clean. Does anyone else use baking soda sometimes? Sometimes I brush with baking soda, then floss, then lightly brush with normal toothpaste. I love flossing! Sometimes I do it while I'm driving and get funny looks from the other people on the road. -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  11. We were hiking in the Northern Cascades.. its about a 2-3 hour drive from Seattle. Gorgeous country.. mm... alpine likes, meadows and snow capped mountains. I LOVE Washington! The puppy in the pictures is sooo cute! -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  12. Hey! Thats a really cute idea. Labor day weekend my boyfriend and I took his dog Jonah on what was probably his last "real" back-packing trip, hes going on 11 and has arthritis. I had to attach a few pictures, we all had an awesome time! My boyfriend used to be a wilderness guide and has been taking Jonah on back-packing trips since he was a puppy. The second night we arrived to our camp at around 5:00 and set up our tent, as soon as we had the rain-fly in place and opened up the vestibule Jonah crawled right on in and refused to get up for several hours, he was so tired. It was so cute. Anyways, had to share my little story. -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  13. Whooooaa! Calm down there little buddy. They weren't asking about malfunction procedures or how to execute a handle sweep or whatever... I'm pretty sure that just about every instructor out there will have no problem with another skydiver telling their student that things will get easier. -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  14. Every jump it should get easier as you develop muscle memory and learn to relax in the air.. like my last jump, I almost got it without any help! Woohoooo!!! Practice makes better! -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  15. I've been working weekends since I started skydiving.. I'm sooooo burnt out on packing this season. -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  16. That doesn't sound so nice. My dad used to do that sort of thing to me.. I never really got over those childhood fears. The dark, spiders, the space under your bed.... Good thing he didn't run around pretending a skydiver had crash-landed in our front yard. -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  17. I loooooooovveee 3! -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  18. I've always found its quicker and easier to just go ahead and pursue the guy. Less hassle, less worrying about what they think.... Just get 'er done. -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  19. For the very beginners I take them out in a train and tell them to fly like I'm not there and then I just plunk them into a sit. For the people who are fairly stable, I usually freefly the exit and have them exit facing the tail of the plane and go right into a sit, I either dive out after them or just pop off in front of them. -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  20. My shout out would be: "Yo Karen, you got something in your teeth!" -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  21. You should have learned to pack, I started at 18 too! I don't have any regrets in skydiving, it allowed me to gain some life experience that would have probably taken me about a decade to get on my own. But.... Even though I still love skydiving, I'm looking forward to not being a DZ employee and being able to spend my weekends doing other things with my boyfriend for a while. Probably will be a few more years until I can afford that though.. mmm.. backpacking every weekend..
  22. Hey man, Don't sweat it, my second jump I landed in trees, a forest actually. It was the only jump in the first 20 that I stood up. The only reason that I stood it up was because I was still partly suspended from my snagged canopy in the trees. Nice tip-toe landing. Anyways.. Get your instructor to really exaplin canopy control to you and spend a while watching peoples landings and where they are flying their pattern. Ask lots of questions. You'll be fine. -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  23. I don't believe in karma.. I do however believe in coincidences from which people like to draw meaning. The fact that some people claim to observe the workings of karma I think would stem from the natural conclusion that if you treat others well, you are more likely to be treated well. If you treat others poorly, then you will probably be treated more poorly. If someone that you dislike gets hurt or killed its karma... but if someone that you like gets killed then people say that the good die young. I personally believe that shit happens. -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  24. Probably around 20 or so.. Now I'm 22 and act more like an old fart. I enjoy keeping a routine and going to bed at a reasonable hour. Does that make me a big nerd? -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
  25. I have never met Adrian. However I spoke with his best friend for a while today after he heard the news. He told me a number of stories about Adrian. Hearing about the way that he lived his life and how he treated people made me wish that I had had the pleasure of making his acquantaince. From Spotty's description he sounded like a beautiful person; the type of person that we would all hope to be friends with. I hope his family and friends are able to lean on one another during this tough time. We're thinking about you Spotty, and I look forward to hearing more stories. -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
