Personally, I would never give anyone specific downsizing advice over the internet. I would tell them, "Don't exceed this or that" but I would never tell them to jump a smaller canopy. "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

I think it is very reasonable that Rosa didn't want to take downsizing advice from a stranger over the internet. And to Rosa. If canopy control is what is worrying you, I think the solution is to do lots of hop and pops. Maybe you can get out to the DZ on some quieter days when there will be less canopy traffic. Try to arrive early in the morning on a weekday and get on the first load. Winds should be more calm at that time of day. The more stressful variables you can eliminate (turbulent winds, canopy traffic, rushed atmosphere, people watching) the more you can focus on building your confidence under canopy. Don't push yourself and jump when the environment isn't perfect for you. If the winds have you a little nervous, don't jump. You don't need to have a minor landing issue that ruins your confidence. If you're not feeling confident/calm, you won't perform as well. Oh.. and practice deliberate breathing under canopy. When I get a little hyped up from a zoo dive or wild opening I make sure that I focus on calming down under canopy by taking deep breaths. And then I give myself a pep talk. I hope this was the sort of advice you were looking for.. I didn't read the whole thread "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

I've been thinking about experimenting with some freestyle.. I think I would like to integrate more freestyle moves into a 2-way freefly artistic routine. But I've got to keep working on the flexibility thing. "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

Ok, I'm a tourist I guess. But my boyfriend has 11 years in the sport and 4,000 jumps and he feels the same way that I do, but maybe he is just a tourist too. I've got great ways to remember my old friends (lost and living). The ones that are living, I keep in touch with and let them know that I appreciate them. The friends that I've lost I honor by continuing to talk about them and remember them. I also jump the rig of a good friend that I lost last year. That helps me remember him a lot more than just seeing his signature in a log book. Some people like to record things, some don't. But it isn't a sign of who is or is not a tourist. And not writing down my jumps has nothing to do with my honesty. I would never lie to someone about how many jumps I have. My number of jumps is as accurate as someone who writes down all of their jumps diligently in a logbook. "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

Well, we always clap for each other after a good round. You gonna be at Mt. Vernon on Friday or Sunday night and Monday-day?? "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

Hey, thanks! I've got it: (Now 15 more pages to go.) The tuning curves of auditory nerve fibers show that stimuli of sufficiently high intensity can trigger action potentials, even if the particular stimulus is not at or near the nerve fiber's characteristic frequency. At higher levels this spread of neural excitation along the basilar membrane is responsible for improved intensity discrimination. Thanks Dave! Should I cite you? Sure.. no place for smart-ass comments in skydiving. And there is no place for beer at the DZ either. "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

Sounds confusing. Not sure if this would work for you, but here is something that sounds like it may flow more smoothly. In the event of a patient refusal of medical aid, EMS personnel are to assure that there is no present threat to the patient's life. How does this sound? I can't get it to flow right. As is reflected in the tuning curves of auditory nerve fibers, a stimulus with a high enough intensity can cause auditory nerve fibers to fire action potentials even when that stimulus is not close in frequency to their characteristic frequency. This spreading of excitation that can occur at a high enough intensity is what causes an improved degree of intensity discrimination at higher levels. Well... I don't know what SOP stands for. So there. "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

So currently 85% of respondants said yes, while 15% said not so much. Isn't that the same as the percentage of male to female skydivers? Just an interesting observation. "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

I'm with ya buddy. Got a huge paper on cochlear implants staring me in the face. It's why I'm post whoring tonight. Good luck with your stuff.. sounds like you need some red wine. "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

Tommorow when my boyfriend gets home from work I shall clap and yell out, "Bravo Jeffrey!! Bravo." "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

Or there is also probably a load about to leave that you could get on, if only you would pack right away. "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

Hey, I'm a Seattle jumper... what dropzone will you be at? "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

You know what.. I don't think that I will regret it. If I were going to have a log book it would be the sort where you write down only the most minimal information, altitude, plane, location, date... Why bother keeping a good record of that? I remember quite well the dropzones I've jumped at. And if I forget someday, well, so what? What is the weirdest thing your cat/dog does?
karenmeal replied to flyinghonu's topic in The Bonfire
Our dog always wants in on the action when my boyfriend and I are hugging. If we ignore Jonah for too long he'll tackle us both and force us to pet/hug him too. Most of the time I'll come home, give Jeff a quick hug, and then we share a 3 way hug with Jonah. -
I haven't logged in about 1,200 jumps. Just not into it. But I always make sure that I jump with my protrack.. so I know how many jumps I have (+ or - 5) "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

I'm a college student and packer right now. Ended up being a packer because that was the only way that I could afford to skydive. I'm still a packer because it is so hard to walk away from good money. My major is Speech and Hearing Sciences. My mom tried to get me to look into this field for about 3 years before I finally listened to her. She thought that it might suit me quite well. I kept blowing her off, not wanting to do something just because my mom thought that I should. Eventually, I was frustrated and confused about what I wanted to be someday so I finally caved in and began researching the field. I found out that my mom was right. I now love this stuff. It's neurology, English, biology, psychology, and physical therapy (among other things) all blended together into one amazing field. I can't wait to be a therapist and make a difference in peoples lives. -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
