WTF Krisanne? I go to the pub all stoked to talk to you about apostrophes.. and where are you? "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

Testosterone would be beneficial for an increase in agression short-term. I'm thinking this is why one would use it. I doubt that he was framed. "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

Childhood toys you want your kids to play with?

I wouldn't recommend living in a tent in Seattle. "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

If you can get to Snohomish by 9:15 or so on saturday we can go do a fun little 2 way freefly. But then I have to pack the rest of the day. -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

I lived in a tent for a number of months in Davis, CA. It wasn't too bad. It would be hard to go back to that now. "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

I would go for all light blue. I had braces for several years and tried all the color combos. I think that light blue makes your teeth look white and purty. "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

I agree with you about the need for seperate landing areas for swoopers and for non-swoopers. It makes me very uneasy when I am turning onto final and I see a swooper up above me hanging out in brakes about to start their 270. I swoop some myself, usually between a 90 and 180, just a little bit of speed for a bit more fun. Nothing much. If conditions aren't perfect, I am the first to just do a normal, straight in approach. I wish that more hard-core swoopers had that attitude. It also bothers me when swoopers try to swoop people. I used to go out into the landing area and take video of people's landings so that they could review their swoop. I don't do that anymore, because I don't trust the people to stay far enough away from me. If I do end up doing video, I will often stay on the downwind side of an airplane kinda hiding out. I know of two swoopers at my DZ who have taken out people who were doing video. One guy got line burn on his neck and the other guy broke his collarbone!! People thought this was funny! I couldn't believe that breaking someone's collarbone because you took them out with your canopy wasn't a grounding offense. It makes me want to become an S & TA and put a stop to that bullshit. I definitely don't think that swooping should be banned, but I also don't think it should be tolerated when the actions of a swooper place someone else in danger. He paid for a skydive and what comes with it. Sometimes shit goes wrong.. you still pay for the skydive. You break your foot on landing... no refund. Plane goes up and clouds roll in and you have to do a hop n pop instead of a full altitude jump... no refund. Packer packs you a mal and you have to chop.. no free pack job. To me.. the fact that they gave him a free video is what is awesome.. free jump was nice but throwing in the video was cool. This isn't a sport that has traditionally catered to customers. Personally.. I like it that way. "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

That is awesome that they gave you a free jump and video!!!!!!!!!!!! Really cool. But to address your question.. there are a number of reasons why a tandem main can deploy prematurely. It doesn't necessarily mean that something broke on the rig.. in fact, most of the time it is just a small thing that can wiggle loose or get bumped in the plane. Or it could have been a packing error. It happens.. Have fun on your second jump! Maybe you can mess with the gear or something and get yourself a free 3rd jump!! -JUST KIDDING! -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

Anyone know what peak attendance was this year? Wish I could have been there.. damn summer school. But nothing will stop me from going next year! "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

Last time I got dumped I moped.. didn't eat.. drank too much.. went for a BASE jump.. then got drunk and cried to him about how much I missed him and then... we got back together. "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

University Skydiving Classes
karenmeal replied to clintster's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That is the only University that I have ever heard of having skydiving classes for credit. That is craziness. I suppose there could be more, but I would be pretty surprised. "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham -

I wouldn't plan on trying to always pack your canopy super fast. Remember to slow down sometimes and actually inspect your gear as you're packing it. I can pack really fast.. but I would much rather take an appropriate amount of time where I give my eyes some time to search for possible problems with the gear that I am packing. Ball park cost of a packing class?
karenmeal replied to AEsco48's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I actually encourage people to do that if possible. I recommend that they learn from certain people that I know are gear conscious and who know what they're talking about. Once they've got a decent command of packing, I watch them pack, give some additional instruction if I feel it is necessary and then I sign off their A-license card. (I'm a rigger.) I'm all for the community embracing and educating students.. but it can't really be expected to work at DZ's where students get churned out. I agree with all of you that think it should be free. But at large DZ's or student factories that is difficult and if learning to pack depended on being social and getting your buddies to teach you, plenty of people just wouldn't learn. (I prefer small DZ communities.) "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham -
Ball park cost of a packing class?
karenmeal replied to AEsco48's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Packing classes at my DZ are $50. I teach the packing classes and I don't get all the money. I usually take about 4-5 hours to teach a packing class. Most people don't actually learn the skill from this one class. After the class I continue to supervise the person as often as I can until they are confident in their skills. In my packing classes you learn about basic gear maintenance, how to hook up a main canopy, how to figure out basic tangles and I try to explain to them why each part of the pack-job is important. I was taught to pack for free. However.. the person who taught me did a horrible job and it is scary to think about the way that they taught me to pack parachutes. (And they were the DZO!) I would have rather paid a reasonable amount to the local rigger who would have given me a very informative class. When packing parachutes is no longer my sole source of income and I actually have free-time on the weekends I will be happy to teach many people to pack for free. Of course, it won't be as convenient as a semi-regularly scheduled class. It will be on my time, in my backyard with some beers. -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham -

When I first started skydiving I was pretty arrogant about being a skydiver. That has gone away though. Now it has become embaressing when a non-jumper finds out that I am a skydiver and makes a big deal about it. I turn bright red when that happens! Operating a Plane Without Flaps?
karenmeal replied to karenmeal's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Thank-you. I had several people tell me that it was no big deal. But my thoughts were.. what happens when something unexpected takes place and the plane doesn't have flaps? Are deadstick landings as safe without flaps as they are with flaps? I can't possibly believe that flaps wouldn't make a huge difference in those sorts of circumstances. -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
